Is controller acceleration a thing?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2016 3:21 pm

Hey there,

I've been trying to play Fallout 4 (PC) using an XBox 360 controller. My controller kung-fu is not strong at the best of times, but I'm trying to get accustomed to it, as I really like the anolog walking pace control, especially for sneaking.

Anyway, in looking around for information regarding how people configure their controllers, I have found various sites discussing controller acceleration and how to disable it. It sounds like something I would like to try, to see how it affects my controller usage. However, of the 3 or 4 tweak guides I have about disabling controller acceleration, most have conflicting settings, even varying in exactly what file should be edited. Most have ini settings the don't even appear in this http://forum.step-project.com/topic/9309-fallout-4-default-values-for-all-valid-ini-settings/ list, and I'm not even sure if that list is valid in itself. And then most have at least one comment saying it doesn't work, or that it breaks something (VATS in particular). I don't even know if I'd recognise whether it's enabled or not. All this combined makes me question if there is such a thing as controller acceleration in the first place.

TL;DR

Is there such a thing as controller acceleration?

If yes, is it possible to disable controller acceleration?

If yes, can someone please post how to do it correctly?

Hopefully someone can clear this up for my before I make random edits around my game.

Regards,

Strudo76

Thanks for posting, but that was one of the articles I was referencing. Contains the following regarding controller acceleration.

Spoiler
fMouseHeadingXScale=.0125

fMouseHeadingYScale=.02225

fLookGraphY4=0.1000

fLookGraphX4=0.1000

fLookGraphY3=0.1000

fLookGraphX3=0.1000

fLookGraphY2=0.1000

fLookGraphX2=0.1000

fLookGraphY1=0.1000

fLookGraphX1=0.1000

iNumLookGraphSettings=4

fMoveGraphY3=0.1000

fMoveGraphX3=0.1000

fMoveGraphY2=0.1000

fMoveGraphX2=0.1000

fMoveGraphY1=0.1000

fMoveGraphX1=0.1000

iNumMoveGraphSettings=3

fHeadingAxisDeadzone=0.0000

fMovementAxisDeadzone=0.0000

fMaxLookRampUpDelta=0.1300

fMaxMoveRampDownDelta=500.0000

fFreezeDirectionDefaultSpeedThreshold=100.0000

fFreezeDirectionDefaultAngleThreshold=100.0000

bFreezeDirectionOnLargeDelta=1

Most of those settings don't appear in the valid ini settings list I linked in the OP. I've also seen https://steamcommunity.com/app/377160/discussions/0/496880503081106187/ that has similar ini settings, but uses fGamepadHeadingYScale and fGamepadHeadingXScale, which don't appear in the valid ini setting list, and a following comment says it doesn't work and breaks VAT anyway.

That's where my confusion is coming from.

Only one way to find out then...You can always just delete the settings if it doesn't work. I use a lot of those settings in his guide, and none have failed to do as adviced so far. Ofc, I can't say 100% for controller, since I use mouse.

Started my last session with the controller, but I just svck so badly at it. Went back to mouse and had a much better time, so I'll probably just stay with that.

So unless anyone else is interested, this topic is now moot.

As it turns out I looked into this further and I think I have it sussed.

fLThumbDeadzone=0.1500
fRThumbDeadzone=0.1500
fGamepadLookAccelPitchMult=0.0000
fGamepadLookAccelYawMult=0.0000

Dead zone setting will be unique for each individual. I'm actually going to leave the left stick at default as press the left stick to hold breath while sniping is difficult to do without getting strafe movement.

That would be Look Sensitivity, which is set in-game in the Gameplay options (not Controls where it should be).

Is that for dead zone or acceleration? Searched for ages with no solutions to find a way to disable the acceleration.
