Controller Config Overcrowding?

Post » Thu Nov 19, 2009 1:41 am

hey guys, i was thinking (never a good thing lol) of what the button layout could possibly be (for ps3). And i thought, with all the buttons, overcrowding might be an issue. Think about it, theres a BUNCH of buttons that are gonna be on this controller:
-> SMART button
-> Sprint
-> Trigger
-> Aim
-> Grenade
-> Melee
-> Jump
-> Reload
and these are the ones im not sure if they'll be in the game or not:
-> Roll (Developers said that you could manually do all the SMART moves)
-> Climb
-> Vault
-> Switch to different weapons/objects
-> and crouch lay down

so, with all those, im not sure if a ps3 controller will be enough, especially since there are like 5 more buttons than most other FPS have. Also, i think having to take you fingers off the joysticks and triggers to press on the D-pad or the X O Square and Triangle buttons slows you down a little bit.

What do you guys think?

also, another one of my questions: Will cover be lock-in like UC2, or will you have to crouch and walk behind a wall like MW2?

Controller Layout for 360

Left Bumper = SMART... this is also for sprinting... 1 in the same
Left Trigger = Aim (standard)
Right trigger = Shoot (standard)
Right Bumper = Grenade (like cod)

Then that leaves jump, crouch, reload, action, melee, weapon swap.

Going again off 360 layout (which is something like this)
.Y
X-B
.A

Y = weapon swap
B = Crouch
A = Jump
X = reload AND interact

Melee goes to click right stick down

That leaves left stick click an open button (Activate ability)
and the D-Pad (which is your equip abilities I think?)

Someone must have played that has the true answers... but From what I've seen (button prompts in videos) and read, it's something close to that... and it all fits

Cover is crouch and hide behind stuff, however while aiming, the d-pad = lean and pop up.

You slide by crouching while running
You climb by hitting smart while looking up

Doing a "manual vault" = running at wall, jumping early to get height while holding smart and then you'll clamber up and over faster.

THIS IS ALL MY ASSUMPTION.

-> SMART button L3
-> Sprint Also L3
-> Trigger R2
-> Aim L1
-> Grenade L2
-> Melee R3
-> Jump X
-> Reload Square

-> Roll Not sure what you mean by roll but probably a combo of the SMART/Sprint with Crouch
-> Climb Hold the SMART button when on a wall
-> Vault SMART
-> Switch to different weapons/objects Triangle
-> and crouch lay down Circle

I think to perform SMART actions manually is just a combo of holding sprint and pressing the proper action ( jump or crouch) with precise timing.

F.e. When climbing up a vertical wall you can:

A. Hold SMART and run to the wall. When u reach the wall you will then start to run up it and climb up.
or
B. Sprint towards the wall, jump early enough so your momentum carries u up the wall and over with less steps on the actual wall.

Manual will always be faster.

Except your smart and nade mappings are wrong ;)

Nade = R2
SMART = L2
Left Stick = ability (I think....)

-> Reload Square

Square is for Ability (throw ammo/shielding, depending on which class you're playing)
Atleast that's how it was in one of the demo levels. It might also be used for reloading, infact I think you're right. It's just that you can use the button in certain other situatons. F.e. the defusing/repairing tool of the engineer might be square to, or maybe just the fire button.

I'm not at all sure where I heard this, but I recall one of the devs saying they were going for complete control customization. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

yes customization will be enabled. My thoughts pertained to whether there would be to many things to do, and not enough buttons

PC will have full key mapping for sure... any PC game without it is fail

Consoles usually only offer 1-3 layout options. Don't know why they never let you edit them.... but usually 1 of the options are good enough
