Controller issues...

Post » Mon Feb 15, 2016 10:48 pm

I'm trying my best to recreate the enjoyment of using a controller for Morrowind on the PC as I did when playing it on the original Xbox. However, there are issues with the commands. If I tried to alter the button layouts in the 'Controller' tab in the 'Options' menu, that's when I found a problem. Upon raising your arm (Ready Weapon), the attack function (Right Trigger) was automatic and constant. I do have the MCP installed.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

My advice is not to alter the controls in the controller tab. Instead use XPadder or joytokey and set busejoystick to 0 in the Morrowind ini. Morrowinds native joystick support is aweful, so you are better off shutting it off and using third party mapping software.

Okay, thanks. Using my PS3's controller wasn't my original intent, it just happened to work (mostly). Would those 2 third-party apps be what you'd suggest? Also, where do I find the files for MW's controller? (not running this on a PC, I'm completely new to modding. I was finally able to get the MCP to successfully install tonight).

I have not used joytokey, so I cannot advise about that, but Xpadder will work with any controller. The difference between Xpadder and joytokey is joytokey is free and Xpadder costs ten bucks (or at least it used to, I have seen sites saying there is now a freeware version) and Xpadder is a more powerful tool. There are instructions on the http://xpadder.com/forum4/index.php site for how to get it working.

As far as the Morrowind ini, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Ini_Settings is a link that explains what it is and how to edit it. The only Morrowind file you need to edit for a controller is the ini, just to make sure that "busejoystick=0". The rest of it is done through Xpadder or joytokey. Those third party apps let you create a profile to map keyboard and mouse movements to your controller in any configuration you want. You can even surf the web with your controller. So, create an Xpadder profile specifically for Morrowind with the controls mapped the way you want them, and then launch that before you launch Morrowind.

Cool, thank you! :) You've been quite helpful. I'll see if I can find a free version of Xpadder.

EDIT: Having looked through the .ini file, the "UseJoystick" prompt is already set to 0. When playing Morrowind, odd how the options menu clearly features the joystick option then, and is editable and functional.
