Controls for Daggerfall

Post » Sun Aug 01, 2010 4:07 am

Not really. If you're playing a villain, break into the best stores every night and you'll wind up in full Daedric in no time. As far as hardware and emulation go, I REALLY like running Daggerfall in DOSBox using 640x480 resolution since it is the lowest resolution Windows XP supports, then using the "2xsai" scaler and opengl output to make it look very nice, but if you're using an ATI card or an older nVidia card, I'd recommend DirectDraw over OpenGL.

Again, WSAD style with mouselook set to look up and down and turn left and right. I use it in all my games, both old and modern.

Standard WSAD for forward, backward, strafe left, and strafe right, space for jump, control for crouch, e for activating objects (doors, corpses, etc), f for readying weapon, c for spellbook, r for recast, and mouse for looking around and swinging my weapons. Only downside to this game is that you can't move forward or backward and strafe at the same time. Of course if you could, a UT guy like me would have too much fun smacking around guards with a bow!

I use F1-F4 to set the mode of interaction (steal, grab, look, or talk), F5 for character screen, F6 for inventory, t for resting, i for time and day information,

Mine is identical, but instead of E I use mouse 1. X is for canceling spells.

Anyone who complains about the controls haven't yet found the right options :)
It works just like any 1st person game of today.

Hey, I know this is an older post - but I wanted to bump this because I would love some more suggestions, and it has been a while since I have played Daggerfall and I have been looking for this post for a while now... and I never got to try out some of these suggestions listed above. So I would appreciate any kind of suggestions anyone has to offer about decent to good controlling options for Daggerfall if possible. Even ideas would be great! :)

I changed z.cfg Betaplayer to Viewplayer, and it sets it to WSAD but the mouse-look is inverted... How do I change mouse-look back to normal ??

It should be in the options somewhere when you're in-game.

Also, I also vouch for the WASD style. I also use ' for drawing/holstering your weapon (I'm just weird that way), E for use, etc. The usual FPS stuff.

Realized I'd posted in this thread, but never commented on my personal scheme:

I would do something like wasd, but I don't want to rearrange the normal hotkeys, especially W. So I rearranged to have most of the on-hand keys on the number pad. Mostly it's for movement and combat, stuff that I need to be able to do without pausing to hit a key on the other side of the keyboard.

8,4,5, & 6 are movement/strafe
+ run
Del sneak
0 jump.
9 & 3 float up/down
7 recast
Enter toggle cursor
Etc.

As close to modern first-person controls as possible:

Movement - WSAD (AD are "slide," not turn)
Run - Shift
Jump - Space
Crouch - Ctrl
Sneak - Alt
Float up/down - G/B

Swing weapon - M2
Ready weapon - F
Activate center object - E
Activate cursor - M1

Spellbook - C
Magic Item - V
Recast - Q
Cancel - X

Interaction mode - F1-F4
Inventory - TAB
Character sheet - F5
Rest - R
Transport mode - T
Automap - M
Fast travel - ,

I find this actually eliminates most of the awkwardness.

I play with WASD controls, in mouseview mode, with the controls set as close to Morrowind as possible. I have TAB set to activate cursor, so I just have to hit TAB and I have all the menus available to me with one click. Also you guys, if you have a mouse wheel you can set the wheel click as a command as well. I have mouse button 3 set to "switch hands" for convenience.
