"Cool" Games?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 8:25 pm

I was talking about Skyrim and a couple of other games yesterday in one of my classes, and this total jock overheard our conversation and butted in, you could definitely tell he was a jock because he had a Giants hat on, a muscle shirt with some other sports team on it, sport shorts, and he looked like the offspring of the hulk. Now before you attack me for judging appearance, he was had a couple buddies with him and they all did that really annoying group laugh when people are making fun of you when he said a joke.

ANYWAY!!!!

He was telling me that there were "cool" video games, and "nerdy" video games. I asked him what he considered cool video games, and he told me "Seriously? well there is CoD." and he stopped. I said "So CoD is the only cool video game series out there?" He said ya, and my friend and I started laughing. Luckily this isn't high school, so whenever you laugh at someone, you don't get socked in the face or have some "gang" of people wanting to beat you senseless.

The argument didn't last long because my friend and I didn't think it was really worth trying to explain to him that there is no such thing as a typical "cool, popular people video game" out there.

It just irritates me that there are people out there that think there is a popular people video game and a geeky video game. It's just another way that the "popular people" try to make themselves look popular... URG!!!

Anyone else run into anyone like that? Do you guys consider there to be "Popular people" video games?

Video games are video games. Some are more popular than others. Some are maybe more 'nerdy' than others. But they're all just video games.

If you get this irritated every time you run into someone with a distorted or just plain wrong view of something, you're going to have a very stressful life. Let him think what he wants to think, and take solace in knowing he's embarrassingly wrong.

Usually popular peoples games are the ones that are heavily advertised as the one mainstream genre of.... the Kanye West: I'm The 'Voice Of This Generation'

My[censored] brother tells me jrpgs/rpgs are nerdy videogames.

A couple occurrences like yours have annoyed me.

1. i was at a friends house, and his brothers friend was there as well.
when me and my friend played fallout 3, all the guy kept saying things like.

"thats un realistic" " why do they let you pick stats, its [censored]" "you would die if you got shot like that"

when we finally let him play, he made us play the opening, then just shot every NPC he saw wherever he went, and never talked to anyone or did missions.

he then said the game svcked and asked if we wanted to play MW2.

2. me and my buddy Robert were talking about oblivion, and this one kid talked about how "gay" he thought oblivion was because there wasn't multiplayer, that it was "unrealistic" and how you had to "walk everywhere and it was boring"
he also talked about how games like that are for kids, and How realistic COD is compared to it, and that it is a game for more mature and non "nerdy gamers".

Robert then said, something that i cant say on this forum. twas funny at the moment.

Like Terash Cas said before decompiling into a blubbering mess, the most mainstream games are often perceived as cooler. Despite marketing though, it seems to be more about graphics, simple storytelling and straight forward gameplay.

Modern Warfare 2 is a perfect example. It has amazing visuals, the action scenes are amazing and the story is something similar to 1 hour crime drama.

How does this all tie into the world "cool?" People uninterested in games in general have a hard time relating to them to begin with. If you give them a game with such generalized elements that they can relate to, they might be able pick up on it faster, accept it and maybe even take a liking towards it.

Based on people I know, CoD is the "cool" video game. There's a distinct line between people who play CoD and are therefore cool, and people who play other games(but not excluding CoD) that are nerdy. Not that I agree with any of that, but it seems to be what a lot of people I know think.

I'd say COD and sports games, here mostly Fifa or PES, but I understand in the US it's mostly NFL and NBA are considered "cool games". I'd say RPGs and RTSs are considered "nerdy games". I think some people are simply frightned by intelligence :spotted owl: Basically anything that isn't "KILL 'EM ALL" or "SCORE"

IMO video games are video games, awesoem either way :)

COD is a cool video. So is Street Fighter. GTA is also a cool video game.

But yeah, there are cool video games.

My dad is someone who is always deeming the games in my collection cool or not. For him its about graphics, then its about action. He stopped by and I showed him Crysis 2 the other day, and he was completely amazed by the graphics and gunplay. He didn't really care for the story.

He went to see the movie svcker Punch and he told me it was alot like that game underwater I showed him. He was referring to Bioshock.

I couldn't disagree more. So in short, its all about how a person can relate to what you show them. Its up you to deem their opinion of something as cool or not. My dad is somewhat of a role model to me, so obviously theres games i'll show him, that i know that will impress him like Crysis 2, and theres great games like Dragon Age Origins which I just keep to myself.

That reminds me of something. I was browsing through Youtube contents, one afternoon, and I came across two things. One, I saw someone call Skyrim Oblivion 5. Two, I saw someone call Oblivion Morrowind 4. Now where are Daggerfall 3 and Arena 2?

My brother like Deus Ex for the Sniper rifle.... He can't get past the first mission.

As much as I hate to say, that guy (the jock) does have a point, playing cod is a lot more socially acceptable than something like WoW.

Yep thatis the way ti is at my school, CoD is a cool game and these "popular" kids think Portal 2 is stupid cause you dont kill anything.

When I talk about Fallout with teh few people who play it, most of the "popular" kids think it could be pretty cvool. But Oblivion and Dragon Age are just stupid according to them. But I was talking to a I guess he si considered a "popular" kid, and he said he enjoyed Oblivion, adn liked Fable and stuff adn then at that point people like the jocks you mention, well they bend over, and say "yah, I guess they are kind of cool.

Its true these people only like simple straightforward games, They think that CoD is ultrarealistic, when it truly is not.

You know, I was never into dolls/action figures. Wasnt interested in dressing em up and outfitting them to make them look good. But in a video game, that all changes, I want to play dress up with my video game character.

In a lot of cases, it does. I don't care what games anyone plays, but I'd consider COD a lot cooler than something like Dragons Age 2. In one of my classes the prof asked who played Blops, almost all the guys put up their hands, then she asked about DA2, nobody put up their hand. Pretty small sample but you can get how rpgs are still stigmatized.
