Cool Nerds?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 6:17 pm

Using the term "Cool" in the title was supposed to be satire. No one is "cool" except those who I like personally - this said "cool" may mean something different to everybody, like a description of an object or surrounding area's temperature. :) Otherwise I use "cool" in an ironic sense to describe the otherwise indescribable twwwats in my former school or current college. We British Love our sarcasm :)

I am also not a sporto. I don't work out. I have a 1-pack, not a 6-pack.
Sports would be improved by implementing traps (like fire pits) onto the field.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the vast majority of sports and I definitely hate fitness training, they are all quite tedious (exception of racket sports and basketball). But I do it for the sake of vanity I guess  Keep my body the much sought after six machine that it is :hubbahubba:

Humm, I think I count as a nerd easily. I think the line goes somewhere near the "can you re-install your own computer from the scratch". Oh, I also make iphone games as a hobby.

Non-nerdy stuff I also do: I love to snowboard, rollerblade, go to gigs and festivals, go out to parties, drink (sometimes too much), and I love photography and drawing. And I also have a solid relationship

I guess I should/could call myself a nerd. Video games, some comic books, vlogbrothers (nerdfighteria ftw!), Star Trek, Star Wars, fantasy/sci-fi literature... Grammar perfectionism probably adds towards my nerd score, too. :P

Though mostly being a gamer girl just makes me a novelty. :D

Granny Nerd? How old are you? :L If my gran was a nerd, she would be the coolest person on Earth :D

I assume this is aimed at Granny right, not me?

:slap: Don't go asking a lady her age silly goose.

Yep, my Grandkids think I'm pretty cool.

I'm much more of a geek than a nerd, but I:
  • Know more than average about computer hardware/software
  • Know a programming language moderately well (a game-specific language based on C)
  • Read, and used to write, fantasy
  • Roleplay in games
  • Create mods for RPGs
  • Created my own multiplayer RPG mod/total conversion
  • Have a nerdy blog
  • Create models in 3ds Max
  • Like elves and unicorns
  • Have a geeky blog
  • Post on the BGSF forums(!)

But I also:
  • Train parkour/bouldering
  • Train [mainly bodyweight] strength
  • Condition and work out in general
  • Go out in the sun a lot
  • Spend time away from the PC
  • Don't have Facebook
  • Have some basic martial arts/sparring experience
  • Have some basic bushcraft/survival skills (firelighting, etc)
  • Used to playboat/whitewater kayak
  • Don't take the internet too seriously

I don't consider any of the above to be "cool" or "uncool", though, and I detest the whole "right and wrong activities for your gender/age" concept.

I'm definitely a nerd; comic books, skiffy/fantasy novels, card/video games, and television shows/movies all claim me as such. I don't think I do anything that wouldn't be considered nerdy.... but I'm comfortable with it.

See, I wouldn't do half of that stuff(the fantasy novels, sci-fi shows, and comic books.) But thats what I consider to be a nerd. Its part of my job to be with times and to be with technology...so I do such.

I think video games appeal to such a broad market these days that the term gamer and nerd stand independently.

I consider myself a gamer, and an intense one too, but I don't consider myself to be a nerd.

Being on a game design course at uni means that my friends are all about as nerdy as me, but back at school I was probably the nerdiest out of my group of friends, but relatively popular in school. I play lots of videogames, read comics, have assorted gaming memorabilia etc., but I'm not quite at the 'spend the whole day in your parents' basemant playing Dungeons and Dragons' level yet.

That said, I think the stereotype of the nerd is rapidly dissappearing - games and technology are far too commonly used to make the people who do into social outcasts.

I think there's two types of "nerd" nowadays, there's the gamer, which is accepted, as nearly everybody games nowadays. And there's your internet nerd, who spends all his/her time on that forsaken site of the number 4 (and other similar sites) and do nothing but quote said things when away from them. The latter are the kinds of nerds that really aggravate me, repeating jokes over and over really isn't funny, and repeating things you didn't even think of yourself is as far from witty as you can get.

To call a /b/tard a nerd is an insult to nerds. :shakehead:

I've totally be championing myself as a cool nerd for years now. I just need to stop playing Dragon Age till 6am, using geeky forums and do a cooler degree than chemistry and then I'm like the definition of cool B)

15 years ago, maybe.

Even these days, at least in my social surroudings/age group. This info provided by the personal experiences of yours truly, so it could be a different situation elsewhere. Personally, I still get a lot of "Morrowind? You? Pssht, I bet you can't even name two TES races."

I am definitely a nerd, but like several others in this thread, I am a contradiction in itself. I love to play video games, I devour all types of literature(favorite is fantasy, but I do read plenty of other stuff including non-fiction), I enjoy D&D style RPing, I like to watch just about any kind of anime I can get my hands on. On the other hand, I love to Fish, Hunt, play basketball, Swim(former lifeguard), and I have the build of someone you would consider a jock.

Oh, and I enjoy writing poetry

I'd rather be more like NERD SAVRO spelled backwards...without all the evil...I would have lots of money and property that way.
Alas....In the meantime, back to my SimCity 2000 game.

Dork spelled backwards is krod....that makes no sense at all.

Yes, I would class myself as a nerd, as I enjoy gaming, reading, sci-fi, fantasy, roleplay, spend an obscene amount of time online, and get good grades in certain subjects at school.

However, I'm also really into fitness, so I work out on a regular basis. I'm not gonna lie and say I have the best body of all time, but yeah, better than the Average Joe. I'm not socially awkward at all, either, which is also a facet of the stereotype. I like going out with friends, and enjoy activities such as dirt-biking, rock-climbing, parkour, break-dancing, and martial arts.
