Cool Nerds?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:34 pm

I think that Im half nerd and half... normal? I play games alot but not seriously as my ADHD does draw my attention away from any one thing rather quickly. I like to draw and write -sigh- poetry. but I also do stuff like play drums, listen to music (as most people do), play pool, swim and many other things.

Hi. My name is Jerhicco and I'm a nerd.

However, this doesn't define me as a person. It's one aspect to my personality. Sure, I love playing video games, messing with mods and tinkering with my hardware, but I also love to party, hit on chicks, play sports (Or watch them) etc etc. I'm not a jerk because I like Yeager bombs and hitting on girls. I'm not a jock because I play sports.

I'm a fully functional member of society. A deep, thoughtful person. I'm real. And real people are hard to put into boxes with shiny labels.

I proudly consider myself a geek (or nerd...I find them quite similar  ) since I love videogames and I'm the only one of my friends who actually plays RPGs, I own about 10 DnD books, my favourite book is The Magician ( and other favourite books are also fantasy related ), I spend slightly too much time online usually on these forums or researching on tech related stuff and I have good grades in most subjects :)

I wouldn't really consider myself a nerd anymore, I so rarely play games that it doesn't really add to my identity. I can't really think of anything else I do that is nerdy either. I think that being a nerd is a lot more socially acceptable now than even like 5-10 years ago.

I don't really bother to define myself or others though because everyone has different dimensions, and trying to define yourself with one word just isn't enough. Especially when people let a stereotype define them, that's annoying.

Other then tons of constant gaming? Well let's see

I'm big into technology. I'm also a beginner game programmer and designer. I read a lot, not especially just sci fi and fantasy. But many things such as biographies, history books, philosophy, fiction, musical, etc. I play guitar, I study pop culture, the history of games, watch lots of sci fi films (not especially TV. Not a big fan other then The Twilight Zone) I've been to some conventions, I think all that tied up with the fact that I play games a lot qualifies me as a nerd. Now all I need to seal the deal is to get into D&D

Not to mention that I'm active on a RPG developer forum :P

Edit: Like Freddo said, I think I would qualify more so as a geek then nerd. Considering I have very good social skills.

Uh, that word 'stereotype' (shudders..)

Apparently, wearing glasses (they aren't actually that noticeable) and being fairly lean (and well spoken) qualifies as being a nerd around where I live. Yet these kids probably think nothing more than
Justin Bieber if they are girls or football or Call of Duty if they are boys.

I don't think I qualify as a nerd, though the few hobbies I have I guess are a little 'nerdy'.

Do I consider myself a nerd? I guess so but I'm more of a compute technology nerd than a regular nerd... I mean I usually get more excited over the technology behind game than the game itself, like when L4D was released the only thing that I was interested about was the new physics based animations.

I thought the whole Director AI thing was a lot more interesting than the animations haha.

I spend a lot of time playing vids and messing around on the computer. I love electronics and have a subscription to crutchfield. I play chess when I can. And I love sciencefiction movies and T.V. shows.

The anti nerd in me is obsessed with sports, mainly baseball and football. If I'm not playing vids I'm invloved with sports to some degree.

I live in a village of sorts, on an estate that has a number of kids who aren't what we call in the UK 'chavs' but are still as ignorant and loud.

They just brand me as a nerd because I wear glasses and don't look like a jock. Ah well, I ignore it but it just infuriates me how ignorant some kids are. And rude, as well; I walk home from school and some kid who's about 12 drops the f bomb about 10 times before I leave earshot :/

I like to go geocaching, which might be considered nerdy, and I like reading sci fi. My dissertation at Uni was "language and discourse as mechanisms of social control in dystopian fiction", which is a bit nerdy, and I look a bit like a nerd (although I prefer "geek chic" myself :P ). Even without the clothes, I've got big reddish curly/frizzy hair and wear glasses, so I think I've got no choice but to embrace the nerdy look! I also love Scrabble, own a cat and a rocking chair and I'm only 23, although that might just make me prematurely old, not a nerd. But I didn't spend my childhood studying/playing video games and never seeing the Sun or anything like that though - I was a fairly average student and teen in most aspects. Tbh, most of the people I know call me a nerd/geek just because I own an Xbox and I read (doesn't matter what you read, the fact that you do it after school age is enough to get you branded a nerd here!).

I just asked because it seems like smaller towns tend to be a little more ignorant with stuff like that. When you start going to post secondary there will be plenty of kids who don't look like a jock and have glasses, so you'll fit right in :) I bet you've heard this 1000 times but I would suggest working out, it makes you look, but more importantly, feel better about yourself. I'm not saying you have to be muscular to feel good, but its just that exercise and commitment that makes you feel better about yourself, muscles are a nice add though haha. Anyways, it'll get better, just try your hardest to meet people who aren't completely full of themselves and get excited for university!

I consider myself , me. I try not to put labels on me but most people think of me as a
Nerd
Odd Tranny
Tranny
That is a dude!
Ok nevermind of that.

I consider myself as a woman who has happens to like star wars, video games , j-pop, pink floyd, anime , manga , lazy and many other adjectives.
The thing is why label myself to such a restricting label when I can just think of me as me.

People are usually surprised that I am a gamer/nerd I guess? Probably because I am a classical flutist and I like to wear vintage dresses.

If only I could find some vintage suits and fedoras around. Plus some money on the ground next to it. I'm tired of these crappy modern clothes :sadvaultboy:

Antique shops are nice places to look. For the clothes, at least.

Ya I look in antique stores and vintage clothing places. It's usually all woman stuff or not what I envisioned look or price unfortunately.

You want a real friend? Be friends with a nerd. They won't just say they are friends with you because you party, then ditch you when something goes wrong... My party life was very short lived when I figured this out.

Yeah they'll just say they are friends with you because you own the latest video game console, then ditch you when they get one of their own.

Nah, then they need people to co-op with.

Depending on where you live there might be a specialist vintage/retro charity shop nearby. There's one here (a Sue Ryder one), and although most of the stuff isn't that great, you'll occasionally find something good and it's usually really cheap. I can't say I know what their selection for men is like though.
