Cool Nerds?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:44 am

Let's Begin,

In today's society, it reasonable to say that stereotypical nerds aren't really associated with anything outside gaming (and watching nerdy television programs like star trek), by the wider community. Personally, I love being a nerd, and have a lot of fun doing all the typical nerdy hobbies (reading magic adventure novels, watching Merlin and Pillars of the Earth, playing games that aren't Call of Duty or Gears of War, although I like them too). Now I don't want to toot my own horn, but to take a look at me, you wouldn't think that I engage in that kind of stuff. It would be half true, to say the least; because not only do I enjoy being nerd, I also enjoy doing other activities such as fitness training, drumming and going out and getting [censored] faced.
My question to you, the community of Bethesda Gamers, is: Do you consider yourself a nerd, and what extra-nerd-icular (it's a word :glare:) do you engage in? (activities outside of gaming etcetera)

I write, and hope to one day have a published fantasy novel. That squarely puts me in the nerd group.

I play video games quite a bit, you know the same games I've been playing for the past 12 years. I own 10 D&D books, every Stargate:SG-1 season on DVD, I build my own computers...etc :nerd:

But I'm also a serious hunter, shotgun and bow, waterfowl (ducks and geese) and big game (turkey and deer), and fisherman (bass).

When I tell my hunting buddies that I'm a nerd, they look at me about as strangely as when I tell my nerd-friends that I like shooting animals. Who cares?

I think there's two types of "nerd" nowadays, there's the gamer, which is accepted, as nearly everybody games nowadays. And there's your internet nerd, who spends all his/her time on that forsaken site of the number 4 (and other similar sites) and do nothing but quote said things when away from them. The latter are the kinds of nerds that really aggravate me, repeating jokes over and over really isn't funny, and repeating things you didn't even think of yourself is as far from witty as you can get.

As for myself, I game quite excessively, although no where near as much as I used to. I read a lot of sci-fi and I come on here. I used to mod and do some RP'ing, but those days are behind me. I spend most of my time playing guitar, listening to music, going out with friends and I like to running and cycling.

Do I consider myself a nerd? I guess so but I'm more of a compute technology nerd than a regular nerd... I mean I usually get more excited over the technology behind game than the game itself, like when L4D was released the only thing that I was interested about was the new physics based animations.

I play the piano, if that counts. I like writing, both poetry and prose. I also enjoy reading, though not fantasy books. I read mostly literature, poetry, philosophy, history et cetera....

But I also play soccer and work out.

I played football and was on the track team in high school. I'm also a huge nerd. Contradiction? I think so. I love that though.

And if you like your diet to consist of the severed heads of small animals, you're also a geek! Just like Ozzie.

Everything that I enjoy to talk about is nerdy, and everything I do is nerdy. I am pretty much a nerd, no way around it.

The only thing that isn't nerdy about me is that I enjoy to paint, but most people consider that gay, so at best I am viewed as a gay nerd.

Painting is not gay, if you can do it well then it is cultural :) I used to take A level Art, but dropped it because I no longer found use for it and the teacher made it unenjoyable.

I'm definitely a nerd; comic books, skiffy/fantasy novels, card/video games, and television shows/movies all claim me as such. I don't think I do anything that wouldn't be considered nerdy.... but I'm comfortable with it.

I paint at my house only because most teachers I have had made it unenjoyable. Every time I took a class at school, the teacher was too full of themselves to give out any real advice.

Despite being called Granny Nerd or Granny Geek on occasion, I must once again explain I am so not a nerd nor a geek.

By saying that, you have made yourself one.

By saying this, I have proven I am a nerdy geek as well.

A nerd, I suppose. I always though I was more of a geek though.
when I was in high school (in the 80s) it was not cool at all.
times have changed, and we can now own it!!!
For me:
-Comic book collection, including attending conventions.
-Table top RPGs.
-Video games.
-Just now getting into steampunk
-Renaisance faires (yes, I dress up)
-Built my computer.
-into science and art.
-Sci-fi and fantasy books.
...and more.

I guess about as far as I go on the nerd meter is playing World of Warcraft and enjoying the lore to the game and the books as well as other video games. My Army job is pretty is information technology systems specialist which if I ever tell some they just say "....so Army nerd? Gotcha"

Can't say I know the difference between geeks, nerds, dorks and so on, but I'm sure I fit the bill for one of 'em. Besides playing games I'm mostly either collecting them or just watching movies and TV, usually sci-fi. I spend a good amount of time on Wookieepedia and if my shirts aren't plain white then they're probably Star Wars themed. I also do a mean Henchman 24 impression, and I'm not too shabby at the rest of the Venture Bros cast either.

Whatever you call me, it's probably not "cool". :P

Hmm well outside gaming I'm a nerdfighter. Were like freedom fighters but instead of for a country for nerds or for our community called nerdfighteria. We think nerds are not just cool we are awesome. Nerdfighters aren't made of blood, flesh or organs were made of pure awesome. FAQ courtesy of our founding fathers John and Hank Green :
