[RELz WIPz] Coral Reefs of Morrowind

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 6:15 am

- for example, that starfish are found in extreme environments such as the Artic and/or landscapes indicative of a natural catastrophe -

What? XD I'm not sure I understand what was that supposed to mean, but from what I think it does- we have a LOT of starfishes along our coast in Croatia and our sea is really clean and calm, so I don't really get what you'r sayin...

Speaking off, your PM box is full Vurt, but in case you didn't make any starfishes yet I retextured some Cait's ones with newer textures.

What he meant was that while starfish are generally know to live in calm waters, they can also survive (thrive, even?) in harsher climates like Arctic waters.

Azura! This puts Bethesda's underwater exterior design to shame! Incredible work, Vurt.
While it looks amazing, I'm not so sure that that much coral reef and flora should be in such a shallow area of water. But I'm not an expert on oceans and sea floors and all that stuff.
Will you be doing this for the entire area surrounding Vvardenfell? Or just in rivers and big lakes and what not? Will the sea floor be radically different in certain areas of Morrowind?

Actually, most of the colorful waterlife is in the top 30-50 feet of our oceans. The required sunlight doesn't penetrate much farther than that. The shallow inland sea which surrounds Vvardenfell would be teeming with life, even in the deeper areas if the water is warmed from underneath by geologic processes.

The shallow areas? Even if boats and ships were to pass through them year after year, the plants wouldn't be damaged?

Is there any chance that you can share the underwater shader used in your videos? I like it very much.

Coral can grow quite happily in just a couple of feet of water, and does so extensively in the carribean, boats tend to stay away from coral because of the possibility of ship wreck as coral, apart from being sharp and tough, often attaches itself to rocks.

It's not a shader, it's just a tweak, it's posted on the previous page.

Slarti's right. As a matter of fact, many of the world's coral reefs are exposed to the air at low tide. While it's true if a boat hit a reef it would damage the reef, it would also damage the boat. The animals would then colonize the boat if it was left undisturbed, at least until it decomposed completely. Most "barrier islands" are coral reefs which have been exposed by the lowering of water levels and the rising of continental plates.

Anyway, Vurt, do you mind if we continue to discuss the nature of reefs while you are working, or would you rather we give your thread back to the anticipation of your next wonderful addition to Morrowind?

version 0.1 released: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8378

It works just like grass, it needs to be ticked in MGE when generating distant land, but shouldnt be ticked in the Morrowind launcher.

Eventually i might do some hand placed coral reefs instead, right now this mod is quite demanding, it will affect your FPS even on land, but like always you can specify the amount to render in MGE (the grass setting).

I currently don't have any good MGE.ini and Morrowind.ini recommendations for the underwater colors and fog, please share here if you come up with some setting that looks good :)

jh2011: if i later make a version with hand placed reefs it wont require MGE.

kirlian: the fish swarm is a simple particle effect attached to one of the meshes, but it doesnt work currently since it's rendered with MGE's grass shader.
