Core 2 Quad question

Hey all

I'm a bit stumped and in need of some advice. My mobo is the Foxconn p9657aa-8ks2h and I'm running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 @ 2.67Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB. It's not a bad cpu in my mind but I am seriously contemplating getting a nice new Nvidia GTX 460 to replace my existing graphics card (Leadtek Winfast 8800GTX).

I feel it would make sense to upgrade my cpu at the same time and I've been advised on here that it's the way forward, espec after upgrading the GPU.

Now, looking on the Foxconn website it tells me that my board supports both Intel Core 2 Extreme and Intel Core 2 Quad processors, both of which are higher revisions than my current.

I want to put in the Core 2 quad QX9650 but I think this operates at a rated FSB of 1333MHz. I don't think my mobo would take that and a friend told me that the highest I could go to is the following:

Intel Q6600 Core2 Quad 2.4GHz Processor @ 1066MHz FSB. Is he right?

I was hoping to put in the top Core 2 Quad as I'd get blistering performance and considering it's a 5 year old PC, an upgrade would be nice.

When I finally load Win 7 it would be improved further still as I could take advantage of the 64 bit architecture.

Am I stuck with socket 775 LGA cpu's that only operate at 1066Mhz or can I put in the very top ranged Quad processor?

Interestingly, am I wasting my time sourcing a new cpu and will my current processor run better in win 7, therefore no need to upgrade?

I am stuck here.

Thanks
