Corrupted Mod + Save Game = Uh-oh...

Post » Tue Feb 23, 2010 7:22 pm

Good day,

I've recently returned back to Morrowind after few years, and after installing some of my essential mods and progressing a bit through the main storyline, I've already encountered a problem...

It seems like my saved games are randomly prone to corruption, I can save them and load them fine, and tomorrow I get an error message while loading that says "Cannot find script ' ct' for object 'mudcrab'", and then the whole application crashes.

Here is my mod list:

Did you remove any mods recently? If you are using the MCP, you shouldn't have to worry about save-game corruption.

Nope, I've started the game and encountered the problem with the exactly same mod list and I haven't removed any, but thank you for your input :)

Try too start the game again and load the savegame. After the crash go inside your Data Files folder and post the entire text within a txt-file called Warnings.txt. This file contain many useful information about all kind of errors doing game loading and mod initialization. Then wait for a guru like john.moonsugar, he known alot about the inner file structure of esp and game files ;)

If sometimes a savegame crashes on load and sometimes it doesn't, that could just be Morrowind being flaky like it is, in which case, it's safe to retry until the savegame loads and then play on.

If you get to a point where the savegame just will not load, then it's almost always due to some bad or stale data remaining in it, and that's a better description than corrupted, as the actual file format is usually fine.

The MCP is pretty essential to avoiding savegame crashes as Krovosos mentioned, so it wasn't clear if you've patched your Morrowind with it, but if if not, then it's highly recommended. It doesn't cure absolutely everything with savegames, but it is excellent protection for most problems. The new version (now in beta) will have even more good stuff in it.

I've occasionally been able to use Mash to get a stubborn savegame to load by using it's "remover" feature to remove "Spawned Creatures". This seems to move things around in memory enough that it will avoid some crash on load problems.

Lastly, if you could post the contents of your Warnings.txt (from the Morrowind directory), that might help. (on preview, I see Stacet is ahead of me :) ).

Thank you all for your thoughts!

I wasn't being clear :( on occasion my save game manages to somehow get all crooked and then stays like that, constant reloading bore no fruit either :/

Yes, I have patched my game with Morrowind Code Patch. (glad I did :P )

I've done what you said, and these are the contents of Warnings.txt:

Unable to find script '??t' on object 'mudcrab'.

I don't know if that will be of any help :P

Well, it is kind of interesting, as the garbled script name indicates that Morrowind has somehow gotten its memory corrupted. Sometimes this can be caused by strange things, like having too many savegames in your savegame folder (I think the total number has to be quite large, above 1000 or so, including the number of installed mods too). Or it could be that somehow the savegame or a mod has become corrupted on disk. This can happen, but it's actually pretty rare.

I see you have Creatures installed, which does put a script on mudcrabs. You could try an experiment: deactivate Creatures, use Mash to clean your savegame (In the "Saves" tab, click on the save and select "Repair all"). See if you can save/load, and then re-activate Creatures. I'd try that first and see if that clears things up.

Muchas gracias! I will try this right away.
