Corundum, malachite, and quicksilver; why u no make sense?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:51 pm

You were specifically disputing the use of corundum ore in the crafting of a steel ingot. You can do it, so the steel formula is still valid.
Corundum + Iron = steel? Why?!
You left out 1 word: ore. Corundum ore (chromium) + Iron = Steel.

I'm not disputing that corundum ingots don't make sense, but your issue with using the ore to get a component for Steel is a non-issue really.

I dare you to go out and make a corundum ingot, or an ingot of any oxidized mineral for that matter, and fold it with iron. Go on, get to it.

Did I not just say that I'm not disputing that? You're not using ingots to make the steel though, so you can't use that argument. You take the ORE to the SMELTER and SMELT out the CHROMIUM and combine it with IRON to make STEEL.

Well fine then. Your point stands and my point stands. Corundum does contain chromium but it also not be made into ingots and folded directly.

Right, but since you don't use the ingots in game to create steel, then that part is fine. :)

Yeah yeah, you can take your correctness outside of these parts Mr. Smarty Pants.

the point OP is making a simple renaming of metal would make more sense.
rename cundumumumum to coal since the basics of steel are iron + coal = steel ( i said basics inb4 rage)
ebony is a wood in real life, but not a real metal. so in game an ebony metal is plausable.

it would be like the game saying copper + iron = tin, saying " its not real life" isn't an excuse and "zomg its not earth" because then everything would have to be renamed.
face it, RUNESCAPE makes more sense.

The most logical would be that corundum, malachite and quicksilver in game ain't the same material as those with the same name irl.
It is only a very distant relative to the ones in reality. Very distant.

And Steel is just another name for Iron. In fact, Steel is a purer form of Iron than Iron is.

LMFO.

You and Bethesda both need to learn your junior high periodic tables.

Quick silver is not Mercury it's Methril. Some Fantasy settings call Methril "Silver Steel" or "Steel Silver" as well.

Also I was under the empression since Morriwind that Both Glass and Ebony were things made from different kinds of Volcanic rock with the name being more about the color/look of the material and no more.

If it bothers you, you could make a simple mod, and rename for example quicksilver to mithril, malachite to dureum and corundum to ... Galsbogus, and poof!

But I get your point, it WAS a weird decision of Bethesda to include those materials with their correct name (I wouldn't wanna handle something crafted out of quicksilver in RL)

@ Limebeanmage - I know exactly what you're saying and feel exactly the same way about it. It's not gamebreaking in any way, but somehow still incredibly annoying.

The reason why they did it? Laziness. They just didn't know and didn't care to find out. They quite accurately assumed that the bulk of their market wouldn't know either, and ta da...

Artistic license can go a long way, except when you're trying to fool people who know better.

Would the OP care to provide real world examples of materials to better fit the assumed properties of various metal used in Skyrim?

Have you concidered that there materials might not be the same as they would be on earth? Malachite have previously been known as glass for a lack of better word, quicksilver in TES is not liquid in room tempratur and I have no idea what corundum is in TES. Ebony is also a magical volcanic glass that is very heavy and strong.

Psh, really cool people make their armor out of [i[pure[/i] magic.... or uranium.

Dude yes. Like... Not even talking about defensive spells and [Censored], just armor made out of pure Magic. Uranium works too.

Ebony is also a magical volcanic glass that is very heavy and strong.

If I remember correctly, Daedric is just regular Ebony imbued with the spirits of Daedra?

I want quicksilver armor.

As long as it gives you a crazy buff in which you loose almost all controll of your character while wearing it. I will be perfectly fine with quicksilver armor. Let also add lead armor that slowly kills you as well.
