Could Elder Scrolls Online be end of Elder Scrolls Series?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:15 am

So lately ive been pretty worried about the fate of the Elder Scrolls series due to the upcoming MMO being released and I thought getting some of your guys opinions would be an interesting thing to ask. I know that they will be covering basically the whole continent of Tamriel and I wonder if that would kill the suspense and excitement of seeing new worlds in the next Elder Scrolls games (if there will be any). Ive also been worried that Bethesda will not continue their series because of the MMO. What are all of your thoughts?

Why would BethGS stop making the core TES games just because another developer is making a TES MMO?

I think that the elder scrolls has great potential to continue after seeing an amazing game such as skyrim. It would be foolish of them not to continue the series, it would please the consumers and rake in the $.

I too am worried about the series, i loved everyone of them and i would really hate a mmo to be the end of a great story line. Although its a good thing that Todd Howard isnt involved with the mmo because i think that would be the nail in the coffin for the series.

Basically Im just asking your opinions and so the reason why I would think that is because if the MMO would cover all of Tamriel well then making a new game in the main series would be killed because people would already see all of Tamriel and that excitement and exploration factor might knocked down for the players because theyve seen it all.

in arena you went to all the provinces, and if the series survived skyrim they can prolly go longer

The region isn't the main focus of each game. It has been a large focus, yes, but remember that we are talking several thousand year time gap. There are plenty of things that will be left unexplored.

Yes, it very well could bring about the end of TES as an RPG single player game just like World of Warcraft appears to have brought an end to Warcraft the single player RTS series.

It's likely that it won't kill any suspense. The MMO is set before the third era. Arena, the first TES game, was set in all the provinces, as well. The Warcraft series and other Blizzard games ended up being more popular for their multiplayer. TES never has had multiplayer outside of Battlespire. Warcraft was going to end up being more about the multiplayer even if it hadn't been replaced by World of Warcraft.

I doubt the game will give as much freedom as the main series does. The provinces are probably not going to be shown in their entirety due to server and storage reasons, as well.

Depends on what makes more money. If TESO makes more money than the next elder scrolls game than yes it will more than likely kill TES. It will be WOW all over again. At the end of the day that's what it's all about money.

Nope.

1. A completely different team are developing the MMO. Bethesda Game Studios aren't going to stop developing games for their biggest franchise just because another team is making an MMO.
2. Skyrim was hugely successful financially
3. Even though the MMO will explore all provinces, it'll never be able to do so with the same depth and detail of the single player series
4. I have my doubts whether the MMO will even be a success

As long as there is money to be made in the single player version of Elder Scrolls, Bethesda will be inclined to continue the franchise. Skyrim has shipped some ten million units. That is not the kind of revenue a company walks away from.

From the standpoint of storyline, there is no reason why Bethesda couldn't turn around and adapt the map of Tamriel developed for the MMO and utilize it for future games set after the events of The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim.

The reason WoW is the last Warcraft game is because they placed it right after Warcraft 3 while Bethesda and Zenimax online is doing it smart and setting it after the second era, theres no reason the main series will be threatened. Worst thing the MMO could do is add bad lore but other then that everything is fine and Bethesda will continue to make TES games, how do I know this? Well because TES is one of the most popular rpg games out there and the modding communities love TES and Bethesda aren't complete morons to end a series that pretty much made them famous and is well loved.

i do wish they would make warcraft 4, just not if its going to be like diablo 3 and be online only. that caused severe problems being not able to play a game you bought because blizz didnt have the servers to keep up with demand of a game delayed for over a decade.
i think if anything elder scrolls online may make the core series better. the rabid fans that want multiplayer and explosions will goto the mmo and the regular fans can level the games back out.

No.

For the thousandth time, TES Online is not being made by the same team who make the single-player games. Zenimax Online is in charge of the Online game, Bethesda is still doing the single-player stuff. I mean, I could see if the same team of devs who make the 1-player games started devoting time towards online. That would really svck. But this is not how it is.

It doesn't matter how many times this subject is brought up, and how many times we give the facts, this topic will still keep coming up.

No
Just to address the specific point raised
I know that they will be covering basically the whole continent of Tamriel and I wonder if that would kill the suspense and excitement of seeing new worlds

I don't see why it would. I'll be quite interested to see Vvardenefell in ESO but given how long before the main series ESO is set I'd expect major differences between it and TES III

I would like just like to give an early R.I.P. to the Elders Scrolls series as the upcoming MMO spells doom for it. This was one of the series of games that you could always count on to be cool, but the shallow and mindless world of modern MMOs will soon put an end to that cool. The game will fail and they will lose a lot of money, and the bean counters will say, "No more ES games, look at all the money we lost on the last one."

Of course it will be heavily marketed before release and it will sell well initially just like SWTOR, but in the end, just like SWTOR, it will be a terrible game and will fail miserably after the first month. You can't replicate single player game experience with an MMO, it shouldn't even be tried as SWTOR has shown,

I'm fairly certain that when TESO Launches TES is good as dead. I don't really care about TES anymore other than morrowind. I hated skyrim and I'm fairly certain TES VI is going to be worse.
