Could falconry add something to play?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 1:17 pm

I was thinking that hunting with birds of prey might add something to the atmosphere of the gameworld..... Especially if the birds could be sicked on imps. Your effectiveness could be determined by perception and agility. Seems like Bosmer would get a huge bonus, as would imperials (being aristocratically natured). There must be some kind of small, elusive, perhaps valuable game to be found in Tamriel, other than mudcrabs to hunt. (scribs would have been fun to hunt with a hawk, and whatever those worm thing were (scuttles?))

Or you can wear a leather pauldron.

It would be cool if you could send them to do your deliver a message quests, or to tell the fighter's guild you cleared out that dungeon and then fetch your reward so you can move on without returning to the guild for your reward.

Sorry for the run-on sentence caffeine, caffeine, caffeine, :bonk:

I guess it's most dependent on the flight mechanics in the game. Assassin's Creed does birds very well, maybe Bethesda could look into that.

I'd think it would be best if you got them after purchasing a farmstead or country manor house where you can keep other animals as well. The other animals can be part of the economy of your property to generate some money, and one of the options would be to buy raptors for hunting purposes. Dogs too. There could be something of a training mini-game, then you could use them in outdoor areas. If you needed to run into a dungeon or city, you could send it to your nearest property.

The other livestock you could buy and sell as commodities. People need all kinds of animals for sacrifices. :)

A falconry mod, or addition to the game series would be very interesting, especially with the above mentioned ability to deliver notes and small items via them. I could get into that, having held a few jessied birds of prey on the wrist long ago. Good idea indeed.

Trained pets and birds as part of wildlife. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1099525-tes-v-ideas-and-suggestions-169/.

Assassin's Creed does birds of prey terribly! :P They stick them on top of tall buildings as indicators, using models of birds that don't live, and never have lived, in those countries, and then give them bird calls that belong to a different species. Eugh. Red Dead Redemption did birds of prey well. As they did the whole environment well.

As far as being a gameplay mechanic, yeah it could definitely work. Just so long as it didn't become something everyone wanted, either because it was the only cool additional mechanic in the game or it was too overpowered, and every screenshot showed a character posing with his hawk, ala Fable 2 and the dog.

Would be fun to see them as a part of wildlife, would add to the atmosphere. Though i would much rather see dog and cat animals as pets, could have bears etc too. Like, you could name them and they would deal a small amount of damage based on what level you are. Or they could be passive unattackable pets, i would generally like to see some more 'companion' aspects built into the game.

That reminds me of something else, would been really awesome if you could buy(or even better, build) a farm, where you could buy in cows, goats and sheeps, then you could "harvest" the milk and wool, just simple like you harvest plants. Tho i guess it might be too much work then its worth.

It would be cool to see birds in general in TES. When I think about it, the sky is pretty empty, except for the occasional Cliff Racer.

It also brings up the idea of pets, hmm.

I can see it for me. Give the player a falcon and a birdcall. The player uses the birdcall for telling commands like: find me a weapon.
The falcon will soar above the player at all times, only sometimes it will swoop down and distract the enemy. It won't do any damage but it will distract the enemy so the player can smack him with a large hammer, or something. It could also be scripted to distract an enemy if he's following the player (fleeing) before he dies.

Like the fable dog, only in the sky.

Some birds would be nice. I remember being high up in the Jerall mountains in Cyrodiil and hearing what sounded like an eagle, occasionally. It would have been nice to see an eagle, occasionally, but not as hostile creature. I don't care much for using birds to hunt, though.
