Everyone knows Fallout 3 had dozens of memorable characters with detailed backrounds and personalities.

Who could possibly forget what's his name?

And also I think mentioning Jericho and Moira is IMHO a very bad choice for trying to justify the craptastic Fallout 3 character department. How about James? Or Autumn? Or even Ashur? But them?

Fine, let's take a look at your badass raider.

Jericho - "I am a badass ex-raider, don't [censored] with me good-karma boy!"
And that's about it. I am just wondering what makes this guy so appealing to the masses. No further interaction or character progress, dialogue, nothing.
He's just there to pose like the "ultimate anti-hero" for all those kids. Hell, even his story about retiring from the Raiders is bugged and you need a mod to make it available again.

Remind me how he's superior to John Cassidy, Myron or Marcus? I could slap together a completely same bland companion like him in the GECK Toolset in like 3 minutes. And add some more hair for good measure.

P.S.: I am not bashing you, I'd just like to hear your reasoning behind this. No hard feelings

He said Mike Tyson (referencing to The Masticator, I guess) was one of the best characters in the originals. What else reasoning do you need Smert?

I know I took the bait, but seeing all those cool people replying... I thought I could join the fray like a true sheep

Hell Fallout Tactics has better Characters than Fallout 3. The only interesting Character in Fallout 3 IMO is James.
I'd personally say that Ashur and Autumn were the only interesting characters.

I agree about Ashur, I didn't think about him when I said James was the only interesting character. I would have included Autumn but it still pisses me off that Bethesda screwed him up. We don't get to deal with him much in the game. Then he rebels against Eden because he doesn't trust him and Eden lied to him. Then after the rebellion, Autumn goes back to being Eden's loyal henchman. For that I don't find him interesting. Just annoying as hell.

I'm actually gonna seriously state the most characters I can remember within a minute:

Moira
Tenpenny
Three Dog
James
Autumn
Ashur
Charon
Patchwork
Fawkes
Dr Li
Sarah lyons

Okay, minutes up, in a minute again I will try the same thing but for New Vegas. (This is not biased, I am being fully honest with this timing exercise I'm doing.)

Jason Bright
Dean Domino
Col Hsu
Aurelius
Caesar
Benny
Chance
Papa Khan
Julia Farkas
Raul
Mick And Ralph
Anthony
Vulpes Inculta
Dead Sea
Col Moore
Ranger Jackson
Ghost
Cassidy

Only reason I couldn't get more for FNV is because some had last names which took more time. :meh:

Anyway, for Fallout 3 I can barely remember anyone.
No one really matters there though, the people that are in the wasteland aren't important or interesting to anything.
They're like in Elder Scrolls: Just kinda there.

Jason Bright was the first New Vegas guy? I would have guessed Caesar.

I remember when I first played Fallout 3, Moira was the character that really brought home to me that this was a Bethesda game. They tend to make two types of characters: very broad characters which play up one particular personality trait (Sheogorath, Crassius Curio, Lucien Lachance), or flat characters with no personality traits (all the rest). And boy, Moira is broad (by which I mean, lacking subtlety or depth). I mean, I enjoy the character as goofy comic relief, but boy is she ever a Bethesda character.

A lecherous NPC in Morrowind who wanted to see your character naked. Again, not subtle.
