Could magic possibly cure blindness?

Post » Thu Nov 14, 2013 7:44 am

Odd question.

But I need to know. While I was making an Altmer, I realized how well blank white eyes fit the character.

Thing is, this will be a pure mage. My first idea was to use all schools, but I decided to limit it.

I will still use all schools, but only the more graceful and mystical parts of it.

Somebody with blank eyes, is blind. No? Could magic fix that you think? I considered that alteration could possibly reveal a certain sight for the blind magic user. I kind of based my idea on the detect life and dead spell.

If not, well green eyes also seem to fit her so it's not too troubling.

But I was just wondering.

Possibly.

I can see magic being a substitute for sight, but actually fixing blindness seems impossible even in this setting.

You could "feel" people, but I imagine it'll still be hard to get around. Maybe add the Clairvoyance spell to help with that, too.

Your other senses could make up for your blindness. They'd have to be perfect though. It would be interesting.

Well, not literally ''fixing'', but I couldn't come up with a better word to describe it.

I suppose my character could walk more slowly untill she has about 50 alteration, where she'd be able to ''see'' better with her magical source of energy.

A villain in the Belgarion, written by David Eddings, Naradas had all white eyes. This was commented on many times in the story. He seemed to see just fine. However, most character's who have this condition are in fact blind.

I suppose you could handwave it as your Altmer is highly attuned to the feel of magicka that is emitted from everything, either naturally as an organic lifeform or from being reflected from the sun (think a magicka-based psuedo-echolocation). Not sure if that would completely gel with TES lore, but it might.

You probably want to walk only and have to have a staff equipped to assist with finding your way around.

Set the brightness all the way to the left and use clairvoyance and the few light casting spells.

If on the PC you can download predator vision and you can set it to be active from the start and you can adjust the colour settings to black and white. Predator Vision might not work with ENB's if you use them.

Hm... The common blindness would be curable with Restoration magic but more powerful and specific kinds? Nah.

But surely there could be an alternative to ''see'' in a different form?

It's magic after all.

So has there been no actual lore to address anything about Restoration or other schools of magic fixing blindness. If not then i wonder if it will be addressed at some point even though its a very minor detail and probably wouldn't even affect gameplay for most people.

I could see a really accomplished master of Restoration being able to cure blindness/deafness/paralysis. But I don't think they could regrow lost limbs or eyes that are missing.

I dunno, that kinda sounds like how the Detect Life spell would work in-universe.

A decent explanation for it, at least. I like it. :)

Very likely, but imagine the medical bill. :bonk:

I was actually thinking of the permanently-blind Moth Priests when I wrote that, who were stricken blind via reality bending magic so they may not count.

Vision of the Tenth Eye allows you to see not only normal surroundings, but hidden magical items as well. I'd assume that if a blind person used this spell, they'd see the same way.

I don't meaning ''fixing'' as in make the eyes work again.

More as in having an alternative for the character to see by using magic.

Here is what you need to do if you want to play an Altmer with white eyes:

1. Select "Start a new game."

2. When character creation begins, select "High Elf" for the race and the white eyes and whatever other physical parameters you like.

3. Name the character.

4. Play the character.

Here is what you don't need to do:

1. Rationalize the character within "lore" or anything else.

Also, Sheogorath is depicted in game with such eyes and seems to "see" the player fine.

Though a Breton, my character is also blind with the white eyes. I never really put much thought into it other than 'it would be badass to have a blind Dovahkiin' so she was created. I handwaved her being able to 'see' as her Breton blood at work; and her reading books as her reading the Tamriel equivalent of our Braille and the screen has me see it in English. Point is, she's blind, I don't care one skeever butt one way or another. I just wanted to have a blind Dovahkiin chick running around smacking dragons into the ground.

Though here's what I suspect:

Most fantasy stories usually weaken magic so as it doesn't become some deux ex machina device. Classic examples being that magic can't heal what's natural, and it can't heal a wound that had already long since healed. For my character, it was because she was born blind, therefore it was natural.

But mostly, just have fun. To be honest, a blind Altmer mage sounds a lot more lore-friendly than my blind Breton running around in Dragonplate armor smacking dragons with a dragonbone mace.

No

The Moth priests would be the first to tell you that.

But I suppose, since I just told you about that, I got ahead of them

You could roleplay that your character is a master of alteration or something. Since detect life and detect dead are in the alteration school. You might want to perhaps become a vampire as well, to add to your "heightened senses" part.

Be sure to spam the detect life and detect dead spells regularly though. Or just use aura whisper, even. Maybe get a mod that reduces the cooldown of aura whisper, and you can treat aura whisper as some kind of echolocation that bats use. I do that on my stealthy character (who has perfect eyesight, thank you). Even more suitable if you're a vampire, you can roleplay as a giant bat :D

You have to remember that many blind can actually "see," just only major bright colors in huge blurs. It's not like they don't have sight at all.

You'd think powerful enough restoration could heal blindess caused by injury or certain deformities, but other ways where there is simply nothing to "heal," then certain light and allusion spells could increase one's sight enough to see

^^ Win :)

Perhaps add to it the character can "see" aura's so they are not getting a clear picture but he/she can read the aura's around them and determine negative/positive energies that surround the being. That giving him/her an idea if friend or foe.

Having non-standard eyes could also mean they see in another way. For example, maybe they only see in Detect Life vision, or see based on movement or temperature.

Maybe they have X-Ray vision that allows them to Detect Weapons
