Could this have been a third person shooter?

I've been enjoying Brink so far, my copy is on the 360 and there definately are some issues.. but I am happy that SD are on the case

one of the things I, and i'm sure many others really enjoy about this game is the art style.. the world, characters and general look to the game is really stylised and cool.. and the more I play it (up to level 18 so far) the more I realise that the game isn't really all about the combat, it's about your teams positioning with regard to the current objectives and the map.. of course you need to engage in combat to gain ground or complete your mission.. but I feel that the team based focus of this game takes your attention away from the combat, usually when i'm playing i'm entirely focused on getting the job done.. taking down guys infront of me is just a speedbump on the way to getting my job done

I think Brink could have been the same game, but from a third person pov.. I know when you think of third person shooters Gears of War comes to mind, but Brink is very fast paced.. while gears is quite slow.
With the way players move around the terrain in this game coupled with how the characters look and how customisable they are, I think it woulda been a whole different kind of gaming experience then your standard (or not so standard!) shooter.

What do you guys think?

I actually thought of the same thing. I think it would of looked/worked better. Especially with the S.M.A.R.T.

I think it woulda been cool if they did what MW2 did and added a third-person-over-the-shoulder game mode. Same as the regular game modes but in Third-Person

Maybe I'm just a FPS purist but I've always detested the third person camera in shooters.

Main reasons:

  • I care more about seeing what I'm shooting at in a shooter and hate when targets are obstructed by my character.

  • Things always seem smaller and less immediate in third-person: it's not ME experiencing things, it's now my character.

  • In every third-person shooter I've played, I've noticed the camera encourages "ground gazing" (the ground is almost always looked at as players attempt to gauge depth distances between their character and their opponents).

  • Third-Person cameras seem to slow down combat and are almost always accompanied by the Prairie-Dog Hunting cover system that makes combat less about running & gunning and more about hiding behind an obstacle and periodically popping your head out to shoot opponents - that gets boring for me VERY quickly.

  • No more Gun Pr0n - with my character in the way, there's less emphasis on how cool my gun (and its upgrades) looks and more about playing dress-up with the backside of my character. I think Gears of War has been the only third-person shooter I've played where the gun was still kind of the star of the show (though they take great pains in animations to stick those massive guns in the camera with animations) and I'm not a fan of Gears' gameplay (see above).

there are no "third person" or "first person" shooters. It's just a viewpoint.

Most shooters on PC let you switch to third person through a console command, rendering any point on this subject invalid.

A viewpoint change isn't a gameplay change except for the 1 feature of being able to see around corners in third person views.

I think the one thing that would stop that would be SMART it wouldn't work nearly as well if it was 3rd person. :flamethrower:

COD:MW2 had a third person mode, it would be interesting addition for Brink also.

a different viewpoint doesn't stop the game's sytems from working. SMART is as functional as landmines. would a third person view magically render landmines nonfunctional? no.

The only issue would be a lag in aiming which would be completely idiotic and obviously wrong to do for just a view change.

How about the ability to record games from spectator view of your character where you can rotate the camera just to watch yourself do badass maneuvers.
