a couple of question

Post » Mon Jan 11, 2010 1:22 am

What will there be in the solo part of the game?
Can you tell us more about the solo part of the game?

I see that you will be able to customize your character, gain exp, new weapons...etc
But where is the role-playing part of the game?
Will the island be a persistant world?

From what I've seen of the game now, it will just be another CoD, just with a little different setting, and I am not at all impressed by all those technical stuff like free-movement
you bring us to our ears and eyes.
Candy is not the real stuff.

Doesn't Bethesda intend to put a real scenario in their game, and not just a fake setting which will just be an alibi for more gun-fight like in all those
terribly boring multi fps (cod, moh, bf, tf2 and such) ?!?

The game is the same whether you are playing by yourself with all of the other players being AI, playing co-op with up to 7 friends against AI, or having every player be a person. You are even able to seamlessly go from one of these arrangements to any other. For example, letting your friends jump into your game when the come on, even in the middle of a mission. Short answer - there is no difference beyond who you are playing with and against.

The game is described as having "RPG elements" and is not a full blown RPG FPS. You will have a persistent character, but the maps will be the same each time you start them. The missions will change dynamically each time you play through, however, as they are based upon what other players are doing and what needs to be done to finish the main objective, as well as hindering enemy missions. Missions are offered to medics if teammates are downed, or to help heal a soldier if he accepts an escort mission, for example.

Customization (both of characters, and weapons), as well as the SMART system are big draws for many players, but not the only interesting features. There are several aspects different than other shooters on the market. Players are able to choose a body type for each character when its made, either Heavy, Medium, or Light. Heavy characters are the slowest, and have the least options when it comes to SMART movement (parkour), but have the largest selection of weapons; light are able to move around the maps much more dynamically, with some paths accessible only to them, but are limited when it comes to weapons. There are also character classes; Soldier, medic, engineer, and operative. All characters are able to change to any class in game by going to a command post. As characters level up, the player will be able to put skill points into certain classes making them more able with those classes, or at least have more options when playing that class.

I assume your last question is pointed at the lack of a storyline when playing most FPS games in multiplayer. Because Brink is going to blend single player and multiplayer, there will be a full storyline to the game when playing either way, complete with cut-scenes between levels. Splash Damage, the game developer (Bethesda is only publishing), was also very careful to give both sides a reason for players to support them. There is the security who are keeping the peace, and the resistance who are fighting oppression; there is no obvious right and wrong, its for each player to decide for themselves.

gaining xp and new weapons isn't rpg then?

no clue what those last two things are meant to mean, but "it will be just another CoD with a "little" different setting", and not being impressed by "technical stuff". how the hell are they supposed to make it different than CoD without using technical stuff???? and it seems to me that every fps, in your eyes, is just another CoD, now the strange thing is that CoD wasn't the first fps...

Doesn't Bethesda intend to put a real scenario in their game, and not just a fake setting which will just be an alibi for more gun-fight like in all those

WHat i am wondering about is lets say: ive been playing a whole lot.. finished the game solo play. wont it get boring after a while doing the same "missions" or getting the same "objectives" solo or multi play?
what kind of gamemodes can we expect other than "storyline, objective based" gameplay?

for example. capture the flag or king of the hill?
maybe some good old fashion deathmatch ??

is there any news on that?

i see :) all good !! thx

and how will the "multiplayer"work ?
we are all used to playing singleplayer and multiplayer seperatly, lets say i want to play vs real people?
how will i be doing that? like, since there is no difference between single and multi, if none of my freinds would be playing how would i join a game with other players. not in my friendslist.

cant figure that out :)

and visa versa, lets say im playing.. can other (not friends) just join my game ? does it work randomly, like connecting to a server, or is there 1 player that has the host?

I wondered that too, but then I realized that in every other multiplayer game it's the same objectives over and over again too. Capture the flag, capture it again, and again. Gain control of the command post. Et cetera. As long as the story is lengthy (I heard 10 hours?) then there will be plenty of maps and objectives to do multiplayer-wise which would create alot of replayability. And then there's always the potential for DLC later down the road.

Let's say you start up the game and decide to play singleplayer. Then your friend comes online, he can then instantly join your singleplayer campaign however far into the level you are and BOOM! It's co-op. And that works to up to 8 people.

Now say you want to do multiplayer, you just select that and you'll be placed in an 8v8 match. Note that these are the same levels/missions from singleplayer and that there's a seperate storyline depending on which faction you are. At the end of a round in multiplayer the winning team moves onto the next level in their story and the losing team is connected to another group of 8 players and replays the level.

yeah,, i was thinking about that too after i posted :D
thats true!
but the difference there is that. in any other multiplayer game. lets say MOH or MW2 doesnt really matter.. we do the same things capture/recapture flags, but not every1 is doing the same thing, there is no "story/objective" so even if i would play the same capture the flag map 10x in a row it would be different everytime.

lets say we played 10hrs straight and got to the end of the story, while in "multiplayer"
does it start all over?
thats what im trying to say. wont the "story-line" based objectives get boring at some point?

anyways :) i am totally in love with what brink has to offer. it gives me the oldschool counterstrike gut feeling with a whole bunch of extras ;)

Well there's never just one objective per map. There might be just one primary objective, but there's a bunch of other objectives you could do as well so it should also have that feeling of MOH or MW2 in your examples where it feels different everytime.

The onlything I could see getting boring is if we are forced to watch the same cutscenes over and over again.

thx mate, that clarifies allot,

one more thing ;)

what about the city itsself, since we get allot of freedom, its possible to run around the whole city, iff lets say i wanted to have a look around :P while the rest of my team is fighting? or will only the "objective"portion of the city be accessible ? like for example in BFBC, where you cant pass a particular zone without completing what ever mission you have

Cutscenes are skippable.
If you want to run around and have a look at the maps I would strongly suggest to do that in singleplayer, so you don't piss off your teammates.

I imagine only the portion of the Ark that the mission is focused on will be available. I actually don't know if the whole Ark is continuous like how you decribed. I mean obviously in the story it's all one Ark but I think they build the levels completely independent of eachother (don't take that as fact).

If it is though then could you imagine an 8 player co-op horde mode that takes place over the entire Ark and gives you some motive to not stay in the same place? Wouldn't really make too much sense with the story and all but it'd be fun.

since it is a city, that would be acctually something new. altho it would not help the team spirit, just wondering off and finding some AI enemies and some other objective.. maybe even an objective your team will later on in the game face, but you got there before anybody else..

i like the fact its team based, and actually rewards that more than going around shooting others. thats what most the fps games try, but fail hard! like MOH. supposedly you get more xp for helping out your team. but actually running around killing people, not even getting a flag or what ever the objective is., get you more point eventually.

True. I like it when shooter games convey the sense that it's more about completely the objectives than killing the enemy and you're given a gun simply to protect you and your teammates as you go about your business (and really it can be as simple as giving you little xp for a kill compared to completing an objective). When the game is more about killing the enemy, such as MOH, then it's hard to create those teamwork aspects because YOU want to be the one getting the kills and that'll sidetrack you from the objective.

I'm loving Brink because it looks like you get much much more xp for objectives and helping teammates than getting a kill, so the gun becomes more of a protection accessory as mentioned. And even when you need to kill an enemy that's in the way it's not going to be a fight for who finishes him off since it appears the xp is given for the damage inflicted rather than the kill.

Thank you for the answers.
Well, I must admit a was a bit skeptical about Brink (was thinking: "oh nooo, yet another cod...")
But after looking some recent video about gameplay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMn4xZZCBOI),
I'm quite reassured. The game looks actually fun ^^, very good point :)
And sure for me fun is one of the most important factor in a game, like in this good old Aliens vs Predator 2.

(the contrary of fun is, u guess what?... frustration!
And I won't cite all the frustrating multi or solo games which came out in the last decade, cod serie being probably in the top 3)

No DM, KoTH, CTF, team based objective only

Its true that, in a literal sense, there will be no basic gameplay modes such as CTF, or DM, or KotH. But I guarantee there will be a few maps that will have an objective will basically be one of those types (maybe not DM). Taking an item important to the story from the enemy and returning it to your base, staying at a certain point til your helicopter arrives, destroying key structures, after you play through the game, you will know the maps that have objectives you like.

This is not an MMOFPS, having all of the players on one giant map would require a different server arrangement than having each person in their own 16 man room. I assume each map will be self contained, because SD has said they aren't going to use invisible walls (or at least not obvious ones).

as answer to a certain question, only the area around the objective will be accessable, i've noticed once you do an objective everyone resets at the new spawn point and the door behind you closes.

Indeed.

Also on the repetitive question: Almost NO other game offers a multiplayer storyline. If people don't get bored from playing the same TDM map all the time on Cod, why would they get bored of playing an everchanging Brink, objective type map? (With a storyline attached to it)

uuh oh... when steam released alien swarm i was dissapionted and anoid (sorry for english) that if i was playing half way through campaign and left... i found it hard to continue(obviously) will brink be like this? if im playing halfway though the missions will i be either forced to start from a beggining lvl or an end? or does this system only let you play levels you have completed or are upto from the solo play or multiplayer? will this limit the amount of servers for a begginner? thx for any help
