Cover System?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:43 pm

Recently, I've been playing Mafia 2, so that's where the inspiration for this topic comes from. In games like Mafia 2 and Red Dead Redemption, there is a cover system. You press a button and duck behind boxes or walls. I'm thinking that, if implemented right, this would be good in Skyrim for stealthy characters that want to go through dungeons and avoid a fight. Instead of just crouching in the middle of a hallway. This could also help avoid some traps by moving along the wall and not in the middle of the hallway. Also, this could help in fights against archers or spellcasters (or dragons!) when you can duck behind a rock to avoid getting hit by an arrow / spell / fire.
What do you guys think? Vote in the poll and discuss your opinions here.

I don't think a cover system like that would work well in first person, and I don't like the idea of being forced into third person (looking at you, Deus Ex Human Revolution...).

there are tons of ways a cover system could work in first-person. i've conceptualized a number of them for a game like STALKER.

a STEALTH cover system, though, i don't think so. Thief: Deadly Shadows had the ability to hug walls, which was kind of neat.

but pretty much cover systems are useless unless everybody's got guns.

I don't feel like Gears of Skyrim thanks. But I do think they should give us some basic options, like leaning around corners, and some stealth additions in the line of the Thief series (wall hugging made me feel a lot more thief like) like couch said.

Wall hugging for extra concealment like Thief is good, forced third person in any way is bad.

Crysis 2 recently had a very simple but effecting cover-hugging technique, might be good.

I know in Oblivion if you get behind objects that break line-of-sight you can easily hide, or rehide. So I guess there already is a cover system?

EDIT: I guess people think they need to hump a wall in order to hide?

Crysis 2 has a nifty (when it works, which is almost never) first person cover system that's not very in the way. Doesn't require a button to activate, but when you try and aim while behind something designated as cover you'll bend round just enough for your crosshair to be out of cover. A system like that for looking around objects could work very well.

Wall hugging I like. An automatic cover system like in 3rd person shooters I don't like. I mean when being stealthy, I think your character should always try to minimise their visibility by altering the height they crouch to and stuff, and pressing the sprint button while in stealth mode should let you do a quick dash to get new cover, but it doesn't lock cover places for you like in most games. How about that? Like that idea?

Just walk next to a wall, I don't see why this is needed.

Solution:

1. Crouch.
2. Hug Wall.

What I would like for stealth is to act stealthily while standing. that way we could tip toe and peek over the table without being discovered but do this very quickly of course.

Yeap, my thoughts too. Step behind the big rock and all but the 007 headless zombie can't see through it. I can see how the more complex stealth options could appeal to others, but I'm cool with Oblivions system (and the stealth changes that Todd announced).

What changes would that be?

I'm not opposed to a cover system depending how they do it and exactly what you are implying. What I wouldn't want is overly conveniently placed chest high walls all over Skyrim. :banghead: I'm thinking just better animations depending on if your are sneaking behind a box or along the edge of a wall etc, would probably be enough. Also hope they don't have the sneak right up in front of the guy holding a torch while remaining unseen type of thing.

I suppose sneak is rather hard to balance though. Where do you draw the line on realistic levels of remaining unseen while also not making it completely pointless? That's a tough call.

It's a bad idea and hard to pull off if your in 1st person mode which I'm pretty sure the majority of Players will be playing in that mode.

I don't know if it actually makes you less visible or more stealthy, but I'm always in sneak mode, hiding behind stuff and up next to walls when I can anyway. It's more of a RP thing for me to play that way. But it would be nice to be able to lean. :)

I don't really think it would fit in this game. Not to mention its very hard to make a cover system without either making the game revolve around it, or it svcking alot. I don't think it will, or should happen.

If you do a cover system then chances are the game revolves around using it like Gears of War (possible to beat it without using cover, but it is hard). It also doesn't work well unless there are guns. Maybe on Fallout 4?

I think a cover system would be cool. Like in splinter cell conviction, you can go into cover around the corner of a wall, wait for an enemy to come around the corner and kill him. just imagine you doing that as a stealth character.

whether they implement this or not, I will be happy ;)
