Cowboy vs Grunt.

So I haven't played FNV in quite some time, and think I'm going to start up a new character. My first run (which started on release day) saw me using Energy Weapons, and being really disappointed with them. Believe it or not, I was getting noticeably better damage output with Cowboy Repeaters, Ratslayer, and similar grade weapons than I was with Laser Rifles and the like, despite having vastly higher skill in EW when compared to guns. I understand that energy weapons have seen some changes since then, but I still think I'll stick to guns for now. My question is, from a purely effectiveness point of view, do you guys favor Cowboy or Grunt?

Previous experience has taught me that Cowboy is pretty spiffy, especially since revolvers and lever action weapons all tend to have pretty high damage ratings. I remember a trail carbine being a really great all-around weapon, especially when using the semi-wad cutter hand loads. Is there anything similar for Grunt? Honestly, I recall being pretty disappointed by the service rifle when I was playing before, but I think it underwent some changes between then and now; is it now a respectable early and/or mid game rifle to use? Are the Marksman or Assault Carbines effective vs tougher enemies without having to buy loads of AP ammo from NPCs? I generally prefer to stick with ammunition that I either find or load myself, and don't like having to rely on finding it in stock with merchants.
