Crafting / Customisation

Anyone else want to see more customisation in the ES series?

I think crafting is such a major aspect of any RPG game.

How could it fit in?

* Weapon forgers - To be able to design your own weapon the way you want to see it. It'd be great if you could 'piece together' different shapes (within a certain spectrum) to give you your own individual Sword/dagger etc. Or alternatively, perhaps a range of 20 or so different base/middle/end shapes of a sword that could allow you to create your own custom design. Same could be applied for a range of weapons, not just the swords.

* Custom cloth/armour - I remember the 'equipped' item would appear on your back/side when you were in 3rd person... I think it would be great, if you could craft your armour/light armour (leather etc.) With the armour you could choose different areas such as shoulder pads/torso/grieves etc. and go to something similar to alter your gear. Also, where the weapon is stashed (i.e. on your lower back is where the dagger could be kept instead of on the side, or perhaps on the thigh etc.)

I think it would add a real sense of personalism to the game.

Just a couple of ideas, anyone think this might make it in? (or something similar)

Would be interesting. They could add something like that but it would take a large team a lot of time. I am not sure if they would do that.

I think they might be able to make it so you can create weapons and armor depending on your armorer skill and the materials you have. The weapons would not be "customizable" though. They would be standard. Maybe, if you are a master at Armorer, you could make weapons and armor that are better than the regular weapons and armor? They would look the same as all the others though. If you want new textures then you have to be a PC player with modding capabilities.

Might already be in ;)

There's always mods... although I'm not certain just how much you can do with mods :/

I would like to be able to play an instrument one way or an other, or to cook food or brew beer.
Even adventurers need a hobby to take the edge of things once in a while and to have some silly quests or redundant jobs related to seemingly useless skills sounds like tremendous fun.

Why not? First you'd pick the material you're working with (iron, steel, leather, glass, gold, etc.) then you could choose if you wanted it to be curvy, hard-edged, or spiked. Then you could choose how ornate you want it. Then you'd adjust things like blade/handle length, tip-shaft ratio for blades, size of the head on a warhammer, etc. Maybe crafting them with certain rare ingredients melted into the metal would give them otherwise unobtainable passive enchantments!

More is always better, but Id be stoked if they just added a color slider so I could customize my own armor and gear. (on the 360)

Slider would work with the different 'types' of sword etc. for base/middle/end as in the idea I suggested earlier.

I'm partial to ranger-type characters, so I'd like to see fletching (arrow-making).

Perhaps different types of feathers would dictate how wind resistant an arrow is making it travel further? :D

The only type of customization they need to put in. IMO. Is what they had in MW like lots for arrmor parts sholders and stuff. Then shirts underneath and robes on top and stuff

What about bowmaking? Bowmaking was a huge part of many major cultures around the world (ie American Indians, medieval English) and required incredible skill and experience. If I had to choose any aspect of crafting to be included in Skyrim, it would definitely be bowmaking and fletching.

Unfortunately I've not had the privilege to play more recent games, so the only reference I can call upon is Vagrant's Story by Squaresoft. That game had a very deep combining/ crafting system where you could combine weapons to forge new ones.

Crafting can be poorly done, though, such as when it becomes a matter of grinding endlessly simply to get materials to do the crafting. In many games that include crafting, the developers use this approach to "pad" the game play time, but the result is pointless (same as wandering monsters being a pointless waste of time).

Basically, I'm cautioning everyone to be careful what you wish for because you might get what you wish for in ways that you really do not like.

Good point. Having to kill 500 dire demon bongos just to get the magical demon essence they only drop 1% of the time isn't hard work, it's just the dev's wasting your time.

'Grafting Crafting', is generally directed at MMORPG's. They're added to create a sense of balance to the world, whereby a low level can't have exactly the same weapons as a high level player.

However, in a SP context I think it could work quite well. So for example to create a silver weapon you would need 5 pieces of silver, which could be from 1-3 separate locations. These sort of ideas are for fun customisation rather than laborious chore.
