Crafting-Unique?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 1:36 pm

First of all, do you think you will be able to craft leather armor, or something, out of hides and skins?
If so, Do you think, when you craft something, it will be unique to the other leather armor that has been sitting around dungeon for god knows how long. For example, can you superimpose an icon or something onto the armor, or change the tint, or even something bigger? Because when you craft something, I would like it to be personal, and not exactly the same as the bandits roaming around. Do you think crafted items will be customizable?
Also, in a slightly related topic, what do you think wood will be used for, Arrows/Bows?

I would like them to be customizable, but unfortunatly I don't think they will be.

I at least hope the color is customizable, I mean, they just need to use the same method as the hair, and If I'm an assassin, I'm not going to be sneaking around a winter wonderland in black clothes, but it sort of ruins sneaking when you can have the most colorful clothes possible and sneak infront of someone.

On the subject of crafting, what I was thinking is that when out adventuring, you could find some ancient blueprints for some sort of magical weapon or armour, and you'll have to go out looking for rare materials in order to craft said item.

Something like the schematics in FO3?

Yeah! Good idea!

Or Silver, because there may be beasts that only can be killed by silver weapons. Blueprints etc can be found in hard level tombs or doing some quests maybe.

They have mentioned that bows and arrows will be massivly increased in power and to compensate for this the arrows will be few and far between, this would be a useless balancing tool if you could just cut down trees and craft your own arrows in the hundreds.

Crafting bows on the other hand would be Ok

Now this I don't understand. What a silly thing to do.

The reason bows (IRL) are not super practical is because they take a fair while to prime for a shot, and you cannot use them at close range.

This is an interesting question. First off, it's almost guaranteed we will be able to craft, which is cool, but the uniqueness question....

I was imagining a system like the alchemy in Morrowind and Oblivion without unique alchemy. That is what I expect to happen. In any case, is it really important if it's unique? It certainly has to have the same image as another item in the game, it can't look unique.

Edit: said crafting when I meant alchemy

I think it would be cool if your creative options for armor was based on your crafting skill. So if you have a hides in your inventory, at a very low level you can only create a very basic armor style. But as you become more skilled in crafting, you can create more unique styled armor (of course these would be pre-made cuirass, gauntlets, greaves, etc). But the higher level armors would have better attributes.

But surely there could be types of dyes you can collect to add to your crafted item, because they would only need four extra colour styles, otherwise they could use color sliders like for the players hair.
What do you think?

A system that lets you reskin the different pats armor/cloths. Would be uber useful. Not just in crafting and role playing, but in mods. Think of how much time could be put to making new items if people didn't have to waist time making the same item over in blue.

I hope you can craft arrows, because in OB I hated having to hunt down bandit archers or whatnot just to prevent being killed without any arrows, so that barely gave me time to play the game. :obliviongate:

So we know that there will be crafting for each major skill attribute. Enchanting=Magic, Smithing=Strength, Alchemy=Stealth.

We also know that there will be a system similar to FO-NV and the workbenches. (http://www.thedragonborn.com/page/2/) Only probably with more of a minigame feeling with visual images of ingredients etc. I think we will retain the ability to rename our creations, but the looks of them will inevitably be pre-determined in order for the artists to have made character models.

What I REALLY want to see is the ability of TrapMaking. Like Dragon Age being a stealth character that lures his enemies into choke points covered with the booby-traps I've made and set myself.

Wouldn't that require a crafting system that is physics-based and completely procedural? Sounds like a lot of work.

I doubt we'll get a lot of unique models for crafted items. It has been confirmed that we can apply paints and such to our player character model and that could possibly carry over to the crafting system. That will probably be the end of visual customization the rest simply affects the items stats.

I don't really understand how Alchemy would align with stealth necessarily, I would have placed it along with enchanting in the magic area. but I guess given the information there's not a better option to align with stealth.

I loved the ability to mine for stahlrim (sp?) and ebony in Morrowind, even if we don't craft it ourselves I like the addition of taking materials to a certain crafter who will make you unique armor. And taking snow-wolf pelts to that guy in Solstheim.
I guess they kind of had that in the Shivering Isles expansion of Oblivion, I can't recall the name of that armor though.

I do hope crafting utilizes just about everything mentioned here ! I would also like to be able to gather resources to use to create paints or dyes and be able to change the color of fabrics on clothes and even armour.

Alchemy has lots of poisons that stealth characters can make use of. That's pretty much the reason that makes the most sense to me.

That said, I'm hoping there will be a few weapons that you can only make after you find specific items. The lore is a little sketchy on space, being that stars are really holes that were ripped open when beings were escaping the making of Nirn, but it would be cool to find some black as night asteroid somewhere remote, and be able to use that to forge a sword out of it.

I'll put my money on fallout style blueprints with animations this time around. We'll see though, I'm looking forward to it.

Coloring your stuff should really be in the game if you ask me.
It pisses me off when I get some great equipment, but it's all colored in some dumb color that makes me look like a clown. <_<

I'm hoping that they will allow us to craft both mundane and special items. It would be great to start of your career as a smith by making common items like hide/leather/iron/steel armor at first as well as wood/iron/steel weapons and then specializing into being able to use more exotic/rare materials.

As to the appearance of the items it would be great if they all had options for customization, yet I fear we will have a similar approach as with the workbenches in FO3 where you use the components to get an item. I only hope that hides from Frost Wolves will not result in regular brown leather armor though, but maybe have/find recipes to make Frost Wolf Armor (like the leatherworker in Bloodmoon) :)

An added option could be the use of dyes which you might be able to find/buy or craft yourself with the Alchemy skill.
