Crash After Loading

Post » Mon Aug 01, 2011 6:05 am

Here I am again, and i have an annoying problem. There are times that when I save my game and decide to reload it (if i mess up or get killed), after it reloads, the game crashes. this becomes persistent so i have to reload an earlier save. it bugs me because sometimes my saves between two different save files are far in between. Please help me. I noticed that some other people had the same errors, but people offered different solutions for them (i tried them all but none helped). I'm seriously considering reinstalling morrowind.

Here's my current game files:

I know this issue, but I never found the root cause. Just some tipps:

Always save twice and then load the last but one save. Save in small interior cells only.

Remove as many processes from the task list as possible and do not run other tasks in parallel to Morrowind.

Are you using MGE or similar?

Does it crash with distant land disabled, too?

Not sure if you do this already, because you never mentioned it....but...
When you die, Exit the game entirely.
Re-start Morrowind and load your Save.

Morrowind often crashes on a re-load, unless you exit first.
This happens to everyone.
We learned many years ago that Morrowind hates re-loading a Save.

Yeah it takes a bit longer, but it's much more stable.

EDIT: It also helps to not use the same save file over and over. Make a new one often. Delete the old ones as they become obsolete.

I finally got my Morrowind to a stable state just today after experiencing all sorts of wonderful crashiness. In the exteriors, wilderness, at random. Whenever a companion was nearby. Whenever opening a crate at random it'd crash, and I actually had a savegame that I could load and repeat that one with as well, really horrible there. My recommendation is, seriously, PURGE EVERY MOD YOU DON'T ABSOLUTELY NEED. I'm not kidding, you might find that just one little mod's removal fixed all your problems. For me, it was a few like Pursuit Enhanced, Alchemist's Arsenal, HELLUVA, MCA 6.1, Gratuitous Violence. You get the idea. If you want me to recommend you a few from your load order you should contemplate purging, I'd be happy to. I love doing anything to help out others with my experiences, limited though they may be.

Not that your first-hand experience isn't valid... but many people use 200+ mods with no problems. :)

A couple of things that seem to work great for me:
- create a macro with MGE/MGE XE to automatically quicksave every 5/6 minutes.
- only if you are using last MGE with Phal's dynamic water: try saving/loading from interiors only (MGEX-XE does not have this problem)

@DWS: im using MGE from MGSO.

@king: i turned off my distant lands. :(

@pluto: thanks for the tip. i'll exit morrowind next time if i experience this error again (i'm reinstalling it at the moment).

@alexandr: at the moment i'll disable BTB, morrowind advanced, and keyrings (uses script extender). I got to try to research about it.

@abot: thanks for the tip, i'll try MGE-XE.

edit:
maybe it has something to do with exeoptimizer? it started to crash when I used it.

How am I supposed to do that? I just can find functions to delete auto/quicksaves.

I made some notes on that, think it still applies:

Launch macro editor
[*] Under the drop down box labelled "macro type" select 1, 2, 3 or 4
[*] Under function, enter the number of seconds you would like between each autosave
[*] On the keyboard display select F5 so that it turns green
[*] Check the box labelled "trigger enable"
[*] Press "save"

You may also define keys to start or stop the autosave trigger from continuing.
[*] Select any unused key on the keyboard display so it turns green
[*] From the drop down box labelled "unused" change to "start trigger' or "end trigger"
[*] Select the corresponding trigger from the drop down box labelled "macro type" that you defined before (I.E., 1, 2, 3 or 4)
[*] Press "save"

Yep, it just happened to me too. When I load my quicksave, the game crashes. Curses!
