Crash - Can't Figure This One Out...

Post » Sat Nov 06, 2010 12:12 pm

Howdy friends:

Strange crashing - completely random, not a specific time, location, activity. anywhere from 3-20 minutes of gametime. i've tried disabling as many as possible, no luck. OBGEv2, or just old OBGE, or vanilla shaders - no help. BOSS'd with the latest masterlist.

Any ideas? Thanks!

While I can't actually help you much (I'm unable to run Oblivion just yet), let me try: Do the crashes occur in a new-game? How about with absolutely no other mods? It sounds like it could be a save-game issue.

Yeah, I've tried starting a new game, same conditions. It'll play great, nice and smooth, and then sudden CTD without being reproducable in any one location or activity.

Get rid of Screen Effects, Natural Vegetation, swap TIE4MODs for TIE In, and you may want to drop MMM Resized Races. Some people have had trouble with Windfall. I don't know much about Sutch Reborn... Get rid of Natural Water or Enhanced Water. Using redundant mods is usually asking for trouble. Your load order is just huge. Cities Alive at Night is also kind of redundant with AWLS. I would just trim some of the extra little mods out of that load order, if my previous suggestions do not help any. Your computer might just be suffering in general because of the load.

please have a look at the link in my signature. you never know if your crashes may be related to the 2gb memory ceiling issue for 32bit applications such as oblivion.

damn these new forums! I set up my sig first thing when it came back up. well, sorry for that. I can't see sigs from my iPhone because these new forums aren't 100% compatible like the old one was. alternately, just search "oblivion memory usage"

Crashes between 3 and 20 minutes of gameplay (as the OP reports) are almost certainly not a result of hitting the memory ceiling. That's way too soon.

Random unrepeatably crashes as described are most likely sort-outable by:
  • making darn sure to get the load order right, removing extraneous or superceded mods, getting FCOM correct, etc.
  • cleaning mods with TES4Edit.
  • building the bashed patch correctly - waiting out respawn times, updating NPCs, etc.
  • running Oblivion Stutter Remover.

In addition, let me suggest that you strip your load order back down to zero and start with an FCOM-only setup. Get that working well, and only then start adding other mods. Add them slowly, playtesting in between additions, until you have a stable large modlist.

gothemasticator

EDIT: Just realized you are running FCOM and Better Cities. Each by itself is a huge performance drain. You're just asking for trouble. I suggest ditching one or the other.

You're also using parts from All Natural that don't match. Make sure everything you've got is either marked as version 0.9.9 or version "final".

I pretty much agree with you gothemasticator. Just wanted to make sure Krovosos was aware of the thread. :goodjob:

When I play tested for memory ceiling CTD issues, I actually could experience a CTD as early as 3 - 5 minutes after loading a save. Just depends what cell you are loading your save in and how long you are staying within a cell that contains immense loads of data such as Anvil Docks etc... He has BC loaded with FCOM plus UL. So by chance, if he is in one of the harder FPS hitting areas, he could very well fill up his memory to the ceiling. Just depends. Of course, i was purposely trying to break the game, so that contributes to the length of time before I experienced a CTD as mentioned above.
jack.q.frost, gothemasticator's suggestions are definitely your best first step. He is extremely good at troubleshooting these sort of issues.

EDIT - I know others might disagree with me on this... Unecessary Violence... can cause uncesessary crashing... IMO. If you have an Nvidia vid card, you might experience some undesirable issues. I for one had a very bad run with UV when testing it. I would definitely make UV one of the last, if not THE last mod you put back in your load order if you intend to build from the bottom up again.

OK, I am running Better Cities, full FCOM (plus associated mods), full UL, SoVvM, Anequina, OMG/TEC/CURP, Fort Akatosh/GoC/TamRes, Integration (with LAME and Rebalanced) plus a bunch of other mods. So I am going to have trouble(?) although it seems to be as stable as TES games ever get. But I am only Lvl 3 with this start.

Have twin 3.2 Ghz processors overclocked to 3.73 GHz (normally not overclocked as there tends to be a heat buildup issue), many GBs of ram more than can be used, twin 1 GB graphics cards, etc. Fully OBMM, BOSS, Wrye installed; Windows 7 (upgraded from the MS horror that preceded 7). First FCOM, then BC, then UL, then a few mods at a time to ensure a stable platform upon which to add the next bunch of mods.

I would just go with this except (why is there always an except?), I had lost my Oblivion cd (found the the SI and KotN + DLCs cds) so used D2D, and noticed my OBSE dependent mods were not working. Got on the forum and found out why. Have bought another copy of Oblivion and am considering a complete uninstall/reinstall from cd. Not without some trepidation, although at least this time almost all the mods are already in omod format. So this is the ideal time to ask the cognoscenti that have replied to the OP whether I should back off or go for it.

Your processor speed and loads of RAM will certainly help. It's not impossible to run the kind of setup you describe. Performance will suffer, though.

IMO, the key point for you to pay attention to is right after you add Better Cities (assuming you installed FCOM first). At that point, visit some of the cities for testing - both inside the cities and right outside their walls. My experience trying such a setup in the past was that encountering any hostiles near Better City walls caused unplayable slowdown or jerkiness. Perhaps you will have better experience.

I have chosen for my current setup to go with Open Cities instead. With FCOM and the other 150-odd mods I've got going, I do experience city fps drops, but it's nothing unplayable. I did reduce FCOM spawns and do without several mods that would have added more NPCs (Tamriel travellers, Oblivion Alive, crowded roads, that kind of thing). So far I'm happily getting roughly 20 fps outside and in cities. We'll see what happens in Bravil, though. I'm trying Blood and Mud Open Bravil. I may slow to a crawl in there.

Thanks for your replies, everyone.

A few comments / questions:

- I'm guessing it's not a memory issue, because it doesn't seem to be connected to what is happening around me. I have been in the IC waterfront, which would combine TIE, BC, UL and some of the others, and it would not crash. Other high-intensity areas have not crashed. Occasionally it will play for 20-30 minutes and be rock-solid and super smooth. Then, I'll be in an interior cell with nothing happening, just me exploring or organizing some gear on a shelf, and it will crash. Or not. There hasn't been anything I can connect it to - it doesn't seem like combat, or NPCs, or location, or time have any correlation.

- The strangest thing is that it was working fine for about two weeks without any issues on this load order. I cleaned everything, installed everything very carefully and slowly. I played for about two weeks and loved how stable my "everything I want" mod setup was working. I didn't change or update anything. I played through both Glenvar Castle quests (and really enjoyed them!) and then moved onto other things when it started crashing. So levels 1-7 on the current load order worked just fine. Then it started this series of crashes.

- I'm guessing it's not the save game, or anything with NPC levels. I've loaded old games, (same character, level 2, etc.) and also started a new character all the way from the sewers. Once it crashed right after the Emperor died, the other time it played straight through the sewers, all the way through Vilverin, and then crashed in some shop in the IC.

- I'll check into the issue with All Natural.

- If I strip out everything but FCOM - does my FCOM related stuff look correct? I'm thinking that it is, but if not, please let me know.

Thanks again for all your help!

Thank you Gothe (for interest is it 'gothe-masticator' or 'go-the-masticator'?). I added alt start early so I could test at Anvil. I did have some problems related to BC - not right after FCOM + BC, but when the other mods started piling up - but they went away with Stutter Remover, as did most of my instability issues. I could not run that mod list on my PC without this brilliant little add-on. And it is always appreciated by the less knowledgeable how many people on this forum are so ready to help.

Awesome. It's always good to see a success story.

To answer your question, it's "Go, The Masticator!" A funny line from Fallout 2.

So...

I ended up uninstalling everything. Mods, Oblivion, OBMM, wrye, python.... clean everything.

Defragged, reinstalled vanilla.

Same kind of crash. Not time, place, or activity related. Sometimes it crashes in the prison, sometimes after the sewers. No mods installed. Something quite strange is happening.

Uninstalled video drivers, installed latest... still no luck.

Maybe it's a sign I should stop wasting time with this game....

should I try a directx update?

Try a http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796. (yes, that's for vista, 7 should be quite similar)

Are you overclocking your CPU? (sure looks that way.....) Might wanna test without the overclock.

Beta drivers are generally not a good plan. 186.18 are good, and according to popular theory... the 196.21 version seems to work for some as well.

might also try installing the klite basic codec pack, and have it set to repair broken codecs on install.

I don't think directx is the problem.... however, reinstalling it from a fresh download sure can't hurt.

Watching for the outcome of this issue with interest. Sounds like a pretty strange crash.

EDIT - To add to HeyYou's great suggestions...

I found that 50% of my crashes were from overclocked hardware. That being the CPU and GPU. I ended up dropping it all together during my load order build. Once I knew my load order was stable, I put my OC back up and gradually dropped it to stable levels depending on if I experienced consistent CTDs or not.

I don't OC my GPU at all anymore. Just wasn't worth the small gains. Instability was a major problem.

I don't think the CPU overclock is the issue, it's been stable for a year, and Oblivion always ran great. However -

Dropped my CPU back to 3.0Ghz, and using the latest nVidia beta driver, and using rivatuner to boost my fan speed on the GPU resulted in a stable vanilla game. I'm reinstalling FCOM now, will report back.

Thanks friends.
