Crash at cell transitions and wilderness

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 8:51 am

Is it a norm to have constant crashes when at cell transitions no matter you are indoor ,caves, cities, etc? I'm having plenty of these occuring and have also experienced quite a number of crashes at the widerness as well. The crashes both cell transitions and wilderness occur within 10 minutes to 30 minutes of gameplay, sometimes 5 minutes. The wilderness occur when theres some NPCs processing I guess and I had removed crowded roads, which had lessen the crash but not much.I had applied the 4GB patch and had quite a new rig: i5, Radeon 5850, 4GB ram, etc, so I doubt that it is my system.

Could it be my mods or the graphic enhancers that I had downloaded? I had use Bomret, vibrant and QTP3 coupled with InsanitySorrow's graphical weapon packs and a couple of others. But even if my system could not handle all these, a less than an hour of crash of gameplay seems too irritable for me. I had read the topics here, and also on the osr settings, but it seems a bit too technical for me,so any kind soul help or had experience on this?

Thanks!

I just removed Purge cell buffers as mentioned and only activate the streampurge and it works better, but I still get a crash after I went out from a cave onto the wilderness. Any remedy?

Do you have Oblivion Stutter Remover? That sounds a lot like the memory related crashes I was experiencing before tweaking OSR for my rig.

I'm curious... is your game freezing, or just crashing? I'm having similar issues, but my game freezes about a third of the time (instead of crashing).

Walker,
freezing can be rig-related, if you overclock and memory speed is off. If you're rig is all default clocking, well then it is the game. I also get freezes, although not often. Usually only after extended sessions (>2 hours). After having done all the best practices, I just attribute it to the game wanting to do too much in that second and blowing up.

Yes, I do have OSR, and my settings are as
iHeapAlgorithm = 6bEnableProfiling = 0iHeapSize = 1024bEnableMessages = 0

I had tried iHeap=5 but it gave the same crash. OR is there anything else I should tweak?

I had experience freezing as well, but the crashes' probability are higher than the freezes, though I do experience them once in a while and sometimes it will be freezing / blue screen of death which I had to manually turn off the PC.

My freezing occurs less than 2 hours, and I don't think I overclocked my rig. Maybe modded Oblivion with graphical enhancers are too much?

I'm using standard clock speeds (I don't know how to overclock, and have no real wish to do so). I figured it's mod-related, since it started happening at about 100 hours into my game, with no warning, and it's continued on my new, more powerful system. I can rarely play for more than 15-20 minutes (it usually crashes in less than 10), and never for more than an hour.

I had experience freezing as well, but the crashes' probability are higher than the freezes, though I do experience them once in a while and sometimes it will be freezing / blue screen of death which I had to manually turn off the PC.
Ooh. Never gotten a BSOD. I'm wondering if it might be a corrupt mod. I've been trying to track down my issues for a couple weeks now with no success, despite having found/fixed a couple other problems. The only things you and I have in common, mod-wise, appear to be COBL and some of the UL mods.

My advice (and you'll see it elsewhere as well): Rip your load order down to a few mods, start a new game, and add small groups of mods (3-4) at a time. At some point you should start running into problems, whereupon you should be able to determine whether it's your system or a bad mod. It's tedious, I know, but it's really the best way.

Try without OSR to remove it it as a cause. The same settings do not work the same way on every computer (even similar ones) so it could be a matter of finding the right heap replacement and size.

Worth a quick test.

OSR... I seem to get good results using the iHeapAlgorithm = 1, just try which one works best for you. As a test, like Peter says, remove OSR completely, or - at the minimum - reset the bReplaceHeap back to zero (the default) and see what it does. Also if HeapReplace is on, try a different iHeapSize, the default is 450 but try 1024 or some other number between those ranges. It's really tedious I know but it seems to be very individual from system to system.

@Walker,
normal game time about 10 - 15 minutes? That is really bad... As a last resort, there is always the erase and re-install... ultimately you may save yourself time, instead of trying to figure out what went wrong when... Maybe also try delete the oblivion.ini and let the game create a new one for itself. (But I would think you have tried that already). I nowadays do not bother much with bug hunting. If the game becomes really crashy, I just reinstall. I have a clean base vanilla-only setup that I can just copy over from another directory which is good to have because of the WB and OBMM installations. So I do not need to rebuild from totally zero.

Ultimately, and I will not tell you a secret, the more mods you have on, the more fragile the whole thing becomes... But yes, 15 minutes is definitely a big issue.

I had the problems on my old system, and they persisted when I upgraded. Anyway, when you have ~180 mods, constantly reinstalling isn't really an option. :) It takes several hours to get everything installed.

I keep a mod changelog - a simple text file wherein I list anything I add/upgrade/delete, including tools. It's helped a lot in the past for figuring things out, and I think I've finally gotten this one nailed down too - looks like BSA issues. It worked for ~100 hours, so I knew it wasn't anything to do with the install itself; I just had to read my changelog and not discard stuff that I thought was good (and check a few not-obvious things).

Ultimately, and I will not tell you a secret, the more mods you have on, the more fragile the whole thing becomes... But yes, 15 minutes is definitely a big issue.
Oh, I know. I'm on my "final" playthrough before I install Skyrim, so my LO is pretty stable - mostly just upgrades.

Ok I'm now trying with iHeapAlgorithm = 5 and iHeapSize = 450. It seem s better to crash at about an hour later, have to test again to confirm. Hopefully this setting will endure a longer time to crash.

Edit: Probably I wrote too early, upon loading the game and coming to the wilderness from a fort, I crashed again again in less than 5 minutes. Prior to this crash, I also experienced freezing on my game when I loaded it in a fort.I guess my problem is the same as WalkerInShadows. Probably I should remove some mods? What mods should I remove first to reduce this?

Scripts intensive or NPCs adding mods any guidance would be welcomed.

Cheers.

artemis, are you playing with Talkie Toaster companion mod? I think you do, reading your original modlist.

Try with not taking any companions with you for a change....

It is only a suspicion at this point. But see, I use this mod as well, and I love it! But only lately after some 200+ hours with my present game, I seem to get freezes really quickly when I have a companion around. I sent them away to wait for me in some city and go on adventuring by myself and the game runs stable like before. I find this rather disheartening. I am close to the point of disabling the TTShare mod temporarily, make some saves without it and re-install it thereafter, hoping that will resolve the issues. Not sure though... in any case, try going alone for a while, see if it helps.

Yup Im having the toaster companion mod, but I'm not travelling with any companions yet. So it may not be the mod, or is it really that mod even though I did not have any companions? Probably I will try without that mod and see how.

It was a guess, I am in no way certain that Toaster mod is the culprit!

In fact yesterday I did not experience the problem much even when having a companion around. So I could just was well be wrong. Just one potential mod to keep an eye on when testing.

Having said that, since you have it only installed but "nothing done with it" so far, I would think Toaster should not interfere at all with anything in your game yet. So I would believe your problems probably lie elsewhere. You may not have much choice but disabling bunches of mods until you get stable again.

I also had the thought with companions being an issue, I had my game remotely stable, but kept adding a mod here and then and I recently noticed a growth in CTD frequency shortly after Vilja joined me. However I could not proof with certainty that it was indeed due to this mod. I rather think that the CTDs are more a result of the pc not being able to handle the mod setup, at least in my case. The CTDs basically can occur anywhere and are just most frequent in the wilderness and during cell transitions because that's where the hardware is strained the most. I regularly get CTDs
- upon entering my house (Shadowcrest Vineyard) after having played for a while
- in UL Darkforest and near Bravil - both can happen not more than 5 minutes into the game without me having been anywhere else before
- during intense battles
-anywhere, after I have played for a while
-IC waterfront and talos bridge used to be pretty bad either, before I found out about the LAA patch and lowered uGridDistantcount in the ini file it crashed regularly upon crossing the bridge after I added Talos Bridge Gate House.
All of these are areas/situations where also the overall performance is worst.
Changing the settings of OSR so far made no noticeable difference for me.
I am running the full set - QTP3, RAEVWD, Better Cities, all Unique Landscapes, Alive Waters, OOO - guess it's just too much. I am going to disable Dark Forest, Bravil Barrowfields, and the ships from BC there and see how it goes.
RAEVWD is probably the mod with the most overall impact, but it's also the one I would miss most when not using it.
I also noticed that certain mods become unreliable when your system starts to struggle with the mod setup.
I had to remove Better Music System, because at some point it started to permanently switch tracks for no reason in the wilderness, apparently about each time I got into a new cell.
And a mod that allows me to change nighteyeshaders on the fly via console commands often resets the shader to vanilla in the same fashion.
But when I look at your system and remember some of Arthmoors comments I wonder if it is worth to get a new pc trying to run Oblivion better. Can I expect any improvement with more than 3GHz CPU, a faster graphics card and more than 4GB Ram when my current card hardly uses half of its available memory and Ram Usage hardly exceeds 2GB either before the game crashs?

@WalkerInShadows I think it could help if you told us a bit more about what exactly your issues were to have a better idea what to watch out for.

I've found that Bravil Barrowfields and BC Waterfront are especially hard on graphics, which is a shame, because I really like BB.

I also noticed that certain mods become unreliable when your system starts to struggle with the mod setup.
I had to remove Better Music System, because at some point it started to permanently switch tracks for no reason in the wilderness, apparently about each time I got into a new cell.
I had that problem too - never could figure out what caused it; it just stopped working one day.

And a mod that allows me to change nighteyeshaders on the fly via console commands often resets the shader to vanilla in the same fashion.
Why would you want to change shaders on the fly?

@WalkerInShadows I think it could help if you told us a bit more about what exactly your issues were to have a better idea what to watch out for.
Basically... the game crashes after 5-15 minutes in game; sometimes (about 1/4 of the time) it just freezes and I have to use the task manager to kill it. 90% of the time, it's outdoors - if I stay in an enclosed worldspace (dungeon, city), I can go for up to an hour, if I'm lucky. The crashes occur at random*, on cell transitions, or when I'm opening containers. After two weeks of trying to figure it out, I've given up - I'm going to play Skyrim for awhile. When I go back to Oblivion, I'll reinstall everything and see if that does anything.

*Some crashes seem to occur in the same general area - that is, after the first time I crash there, I'll reload and head toward that area again, and crash there again. I've been able to get around specific instances by tweaking my LO a bit and rebuilding the patch (that's why I thought it was a specific problem that I'd fixed, but it kept coming back).

I've had the exact same problem ever since I ran TES4LODGen. Before that, I had a silky smooth framerate and zero crashes, even running QTP3, UL, and OBGE. Now, even after deleting my distantlod folder and every _far.nif mesh I could find and rerunning the distant land generator, I still crash after about 5-10 minutes in the outdoors or when I try to fast travel. I haven't tried a fresh install yet, but it's possible that's your problem. I'll be watching this thread closely.

Why would you want to change shaders on the fly?

I did not necessarily want this, I just wanted to change the shader and that was the way this mod was doing it. I found it useful, with my previous mod I had to exit the game each time to reconfigure the shader to see which one I liked best.

I tested with Better Music System a bit and it seemed to work again when I had less mods enabled. But I did not want that, so it had to go...

Thanks, for spotting it, I just removed those and followed Tommy_H's instructions to remove Toaster's mod too. I had read somewhere that NPC adding mods could be the culprit for crashes due to spawn point and processing time, thus I had removed 1 NPC adding mod "Immersive Travellers" but with Tamriel Travellers and Roaming NPCs still in. For me the crash seems to occur when there is NPCs in the wilderness or MMM's monsters, though I could not be sure of this as I would crash in doors and cell transitions as well.

I also saw everyone's crashing problem seems to be having the same issue, probably it is a combination of too many mods and processing power? I'm thinking of uninstalling the whole thing again, but its too tiresome and I feel that when I uninstall I may end up reinstalling everything back again; mod greediness guilty as charged!

A few days ago i mentioned that the pretty bad crashing I suddenly experienced, especially with companion around, has subsided a bit. Today I can tell that is has definitely subsided, and I really have no idea why! I've been playing with one companion over the last days, had her around for my adventuring, and it played just fine, as it used to.

I have not added or deducted one single mod in my modlist. What I did do however was to rebuild my Bashed Patch once. There was no actual reason for it, as there were no changes with the mods. I just rebuilt it to bring it to whatever latest version Bash "thought" the patch should look like. I don't know if that really helped, but whatever, my game runs much better again since then, strangely enough. I cannot attribute it to anything other but the rebuild. I hope it stays that way. I am weary though, I admit.

Nevertheless, it should not hurt to rebuild the Bash patch once again even if there were no changes to the modlist.

No problem....and regarding being greedy about having as many mods as possible... you are not alone  . It means that this mod community has so many mods to offer eh?

@Tommy_H That's a nice tip... I'll keep that mind so if I have a similar problem.. I might go ahead and do that. Thank you.

One day, the CS stopped working - it required a complete reinstall.

From my own experience, almost all crashes are memory or CPU related - they either occur because of sudden overload (e.g. Better Cities IC Waterfront) or because of attrition over time, when the sheer glut of resources in the gameworld means you fill your RAM up faster than it can empty.

In my case, Oblivion ALWAYS crashes once it has used up about 1.5-7 of my 3.2GB of RAM (damn that 32bit OS).

After extensive testing I can now say that having a framerate constantly below 10-12 is a way to reliably produce CTDs within short amount of time. I experimented with Oblivion Stutter Remover again(noticed that I had changed the heap replacement settings without actually turning heap replacement on...). I spent 75 minutes roaming through the entire province with Vilja without any crash. Then I entered the Blackwood Forest, where despite there's not much modding going on there, has the worst overall framerate in the game and it crashed after just a few meters...
