Crash to Desktop on Launch

My game worked fine enough before the 200+ mb patch. Now when I load up the game it crashes. I'll click 'play' on steam and the launcher runs fine. when I click 'play' on the launcher the screen goes black for a moment and then I get a "FalloutNV has stopped working' message. I am not amused.

Any idea on how to fix this?

same here :( help plz - the patch made everything even worse
i reinstalled FONV, updatet chipset, GFX drivers, run as Admin, verified Gamecache etc.
nothing helps - i do crash right after hitting the play button and my screen goes pink, then fallout stops working :(

Yeah, I played for almost 2 days without a single problem, then the patch was applied, now it just stops working with the message "Fallout NV has stopped responding". I can usually play from 2 to 20 minutes only.Come on guys :brokencomputer:

i've been having problems with my games crashes right after i load up a saved game out of the 4 saved games i have only 1 works and its hours behind the rest haha

Downloading this http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778 and dropping the .dll into my fallout new vegas main folder stopped the crashes for me. It tricks the game into thinking you have a Nvidia 7900GS, but dont worry about that. Your normal video card will control the performance so even though it sets your detail at medium you can crank it up if you have the horsepower to do so. I had to do this in Fallout 3 as well for some reason. It was after one of the patches and for weeks I couldnt play and was really P.O.'d. Now FO:NV works great.

If it's crashing upon "starting" the game, then you may have GX Mode turned on. Open up your Xonar DX Audio Center and click on the DX button so it's not highlighted.

Try deleting the ini files in /My Documents/My Games/FalloutNV, it will require you reset all your graphics settings when you reopen the launcher. But i've had success fixing crashes like that.

when I deleted my .ini files last time, it told me they were missing and suggested I re-install the game, which I did...

picked up the d3d9.dll and was finally able to play for a while. neat game but it's quite annoying that we all had to troubleshoot like this to play a game, and it's still not perfect. I'm glad to see patches come in but I'm still getting wolves that get stuck under the bedrock after fast travel and reloding a save; floating undetonated dynamite; game crashes when going to some rather specific areas (like at the top of the rollercoaster in Primm, which I only managed by creeping up a quick hit forward at a time) and some amound of chop when turning quickly.

umm, keep those patches coming...?

I read this post and opened steam. It downloaded the patch and now my game is totally unusable. I crash when I double click on Fallout: New Vegas...ouch! I hope this gets remedied quickly. I also let Steam know

I just downloaded the d3d9.dll file and the crash stopped...Interesting. Thanks JoeXPC

Just tried to reopen the game and the crash is back...WHAT???

The new patch didn't fix it for me. I concur with the posters who have expressed their frustration with this game. Many of us who are experiencing the inability to launch the game at all, it seems, are long-time gamers with a lot of experience fixing problems. Not once in all of the dozens upon dozens of games I've purchased in the past 10 years has a game ever had such a large problem: a complete inability to play it at all? Come on!

FYI I was so mad about this I actually asked for a refund from Steam: something I have never done before for any game, ever. Of course, Steam gave me a big old "No way" e-mail, which is always great to get. It must be great to know, Steam, that you have a business that can release and sell products that DO NOT work, and can refuse to give refunds. Good luck when this one goes to a class action lawsuit. For any who are willing to seek out a lawyer to put together such a suit, let me know: I'll be the first to sign on.

Crashes at startup for me wer caused by some programs conflcting with the game. For me it was xfire, idk about you tho.
Start the game and wait for the "Fallout has stopped working" error to pop up, Dont close it, instead click "view more details"
Now copy everything in there and paste it here. Itl sometimes tell you exactly whats causing it to crash.

Crashes at startup for me wer caused by some programs conflcting with the game. For me it was xfire, idk about you tho.

I'm on Windows 7. When the crash happens, the "FalloutNV has stopped working" popup window that comes up upon crash has only one button: cancel (i.e. cancel the operation "Windows is searching for a solution to the problem").

So, that's not gonna work. I don't even know if such an error is stored in any log file, although I'd assume it is. Anyone have any ideas about where or which log file it might be?

Yea i've been having the same damned problem although im runnin it through XP. I've tried various things...and i still end up crashing after about a half an hour to 2 hours...its annoying as hell!

Well, I think we have to be careful about distinguishing some problems (I started another thread about just this fact). Some of us simply cannot launch the game. For you, it seems, you're crashing after you've gotten into the game, which some of us cannot do at all. We only get a few seconds into the title screens and it crashes, or else for others it gets past the first intro movie and it crashes. It seems these are three separate problems, and that in fact even after the game has launched there may be several more crashing problems.
