Crash Outside Riverwood : V

I recently reinstalled Skyrim and started a new character. I escaped with the Stormguard and followed him on the path to Riverwood, but as I approached Riverwood the game crashed to my desktop. I tried several times and it crashed each time. I verified my game cache through Steam, I restarted my computer, I even installed the "Unofficial Skyrim Patch" in hopes that it would deal with the crash, but nothing worked.

I also started another character and followed the Empire's soldier. Once we got the Riverwood, same problem. I just don't know what to do. Should I just go elsewhere and see if I can circumvent the crash all together? Would it still crash as soon as I came back to Riverwood? I don't know what to do.

So I decided to try and circumvent the bug by going down to Falkreath. I made it there okay and started down the path to the north-east, when I encountered something strange. On either side of the path the ground was missing. Not just the texture on the ground, but the physical ground was missing. If I tried to walk where the ground had disappeared I would fall for a long time before landing in a mass of water. From there I could look up into the bottom of the environment and into the distance.

This is really starting to bother me. I think I'm gonna stop playing until I can figure out what the heck is going on.

Are you using any mods right now? if so please post the load order. I suggest using Loot to sort the load order.

If using any texture mods then you need Archive invalidation which most mod managers have that tool.

Initially I just ran the game without mods, but when I ran into the crashing bug (got it three times without mods) I looked around and found the "Unofficial Skyrim Patch" so I figured I'd give it a try. I used Nexus Mod Manager and the Load Order is as follows:

What you can try:

1) Disable all background applications from your task-bar (right below who your windows clock is located), your anti-virus as well.

2) Go to Start > Control Panel > Sound.
In the Playback tab, right-click on Speakers (or whatever has a green tick next to it), then click Properties.
In the advanced tab on this new window, select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality) in the drop down menu.

I think I may have figured it out.

Remember my load order? I was confused as to why I had "HearthFires.esm" there since I don't own that DLC. I decided to try and load the game through Nexus Mod Manager and to disable "HearthFires.esm". Now both the Riverwood crash and the missing ground bug are gone.

So could that have been the issue? That I don't own the Hearthfire DLC but had this esm active?

It could be, because an .esm file, is a master file that contains the masters game-settings, used when creating new objects or areas.

However, what that's has in common with Riverwood, i don't know. !!!

How it happens, you have only an .esm file, even if you don't own Hearthfire ???

Yeah I just checked again and I definitely do not own the Hearthfire DLC. I don't know where the heck that esm came from, but I'm going to keep it turned off from now on.

Hearthfire does add new forge recipes as well as add new items for sale. If there are no files for it the game might be crashing because of too much data is missing. Also there are the clay mineral sites in the world space

By Falkreath it could be missing the world texture since OP was likely near the house location.

What I would do is delete the Hearthfire.esm from the data folder to make sure the issue does not happen again. I would also check to see if steam is showing that you have Hearthfire.

Did you install any mods that deals with housing or some other theme associated with Hearthfire. I wonder if that mod might have included the Hearthfire.esm
