Crash when exiting the Black Flag

Hello,

I'm new here, and I've only been playing Oblivion for a little while, but I've managed to stumble my way through the installation of numerous mods, and things have been going fairly well. I've gotten occasional crashes, but nothing consistent or major.

However, whenever I exit the Black Flag (back to Dunbarrow Hollow) I get a black screen and a crash to desktop. This happens every time and occurs from both the Black Flag and the captain's cabin. I've tried loading multiple saves (quick, auto, normal), starting both outside Dunbarrow Hollow and within it. I always get the crash. I've managed my mod installation through a combination of BAIN and BOSS. I've also spent some time searching Google and various forums looking for some other reference to this problem but haven't found anything definitive.

I'm thinking ths is probably a mod-related issue, and before I either abandon the thought of my own pirate ship or spend hours load/unloading mods to try to find the problem, I thought I'd see if anyone else had this or a similar problem and maybe a fix.

Ok first things first. Could you post your load order with Wrye Bash (In the Mods Tab, Right Click on File, Select List Mods, Right Click, Select All, Copy and Paste to here)?

Also are you using the latest version of the http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296 and the http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9969?

Read the Boss Log for your modlist and check carefully for any conflicts, incompatabilities or mods that require cleaning.

I have to admit I don't use the Theives Den DLC so I can't help you with any specifics but I do know certain mods require patches to be used with it.

I did not realize that there was another mod with a Black Flag ship, but I am having trouble with the Thieves Den DLC.

I have the Unoffical oblivion patch, shivering isles patch and the unofficial mods patch installed in their latest versions. I also have the addition patches where required. My copy of the game is the Deluxe Edition from Steam.

My load list is as follows:

I'm new to modding Oblivion, so there are probably goofs in this load list, but until this recent problem I haven't had any serious issues.

I still need to clean some of the mods. I did clean the Thieves Den DLC to see if it would make any difference. It did not.

Before you exit, try typing "tai" in the console, without any specific item selected by the mouse cursor. Try exiting now, and see if it prevents the crash?

Type in "tai" again once you are out of the Dunbarrow cave. tai toggles ai, so in case the crash is caused by some script on some NPC/creature, it will not fire now. Of course, this is not going to help if your root cause is different.

02 Oscuro's_Oblivion_Overhaul.esm [Version 1.33]

Either upgrade to http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=15256, (In Downloads scroll down to Updates and download the OOO 1.34 Beta 5 Patch, Install it after version 1.33 in BAIN) or you could wait until version 1.35 comes out of beta (hopefully by the end of this month :fingers crossed:)

07 Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp [Version 3.2.0]

This needs updating to http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296. You must have missed this when you upgraded the other parts of the UOP since all of them are up to date (except for an issue I'll point out later). Go to the link provided and in Downloads, scroll down to the Updates section, and download the manual update and install it in BAIN after the main UOP file.


08 UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp [Version 1.0.0]


You can drop this esp. When rebuilding the bashed patch, click on Tweak Assorted and tick the box next to UOP Vampire Aging & Face fix (In fact if you are using the latest version of Wrye Bash (295.5) it could well be already ticked since it already preselects any necessary tags in your modlist)

09 Oblivion Citadel Door Fix.esp


Ditch this, it isn't needed at all.

0D Living Economy.esp
0E Living Economy - Items.esp
0F Cutthroat Merchants.esp

Consider upgrading to http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=25078, it can do all of the above and so much more in just one esp and is also completely bug free (Uninstall the above first and make a clean save, then you are perfectly safe in installing EE). Indeed all of The Nice One's mods are worth having, each one seems to be the best of that type of mod available. You already have Enhanced Hotkeys and HUD Status Bars.

You should only be using one of these esps, not both. Use the one for OOO since that's what you have installed and ditch the other one.

In Wrye Bash all of these should appear with green or purple text, this is telling you these mods should not be activated. All of the above should be deactivated and merged/imported into the bashed patch. To build a bashed patch, right click on the bashed patch esp and select Rebuild Patch (use the CBash version since it's quicker and you get to merge/import more stuff. If you are using version 295.5 of Wrye Bash all of the donkey work in terms of ticking the required boxes should be done. Since this is likely your first attempt at doing this all of the options will also be bolded. Whenever anything new is added to the bashed patch the relevent area will be bolded. Select the Rebuild Patch button and wait for it to process. It should only take a few minutes. When you reload your game I would reccomend you wait 72 hours for the game to respawn everthing and properly apply all the changes in the Bashed Patch

If you do all this it will hopefully fix your problem. If it doesn't then you may have to deactivate the Thieves Den esp (as well as the UOP patch for it) and load a save from before you started the quest. Make a clean save (ie a fresh save that isn't overwriting another) and then reactivate the Theives Den esp and try the quest again. If you don't have a save from before you started the quest then it pretty much means restarting your game I'm afraid.

Hopefully you find all this helpful. Please don't throw a strop at the work that needs doing, I've spent the best part of 2 hours typing up this post.

Ok, so I have tried the things that both anithinks and Artorius have said.

Toggling the ai still results in crashing.

The multitude of fixes produces some interesting results:

Round 1: (with CBash option)--The Dunbarrow Cove area is renamed to Paradise Cave (internal areas are also renamed, Dagon Shrine, ect). At this point if I load a save inside of Dunbarrow (Paradise Cave), I can go in and out of doors as much as I want with no crashing. I can even completely leave the area and come back with no crashing. However, if I load a save prior to entering the Dunbarrow (Paradise cave) I get a crash when I try to enter the area. Based on what I've read, the alternative names are those of the test cells off of which the DLC content is based. It also doesn't seem to be a problem if you use the normal BASH function rather than the CBASH one.

Round 2: Normal BASH--I get the appropriate names, but things are otherwise as stated above.

Waiting 72 game hours still results in a crash.

Unfortunately, I got the bundled version with Steam, and it pre-installs the DLC. That means no save with the DLC (and the initial quest entry) absent

One other thing, Artorius, if I enable the Item interchange - Extraction.esp, Oblivion crashes on startup.

Finally, thank you both for your help and suggestions, while I am not exactly computer illiterate, I am far from knowledgeable regarding modding in Oblivion. I really appreciate the load list recommendations. It obviously took quite some time to put that together, and it was far more than I was anticipating when I posted here.

Thankyou for attempting to take my suggestions on board, it is always good to help someone who is willing to listen. Unfortunately we get too many of the type of inexperienced and ungrateful users who whine and complain that they might actually have to do some work to achieve what they want. So it's nice to have someone who is receptive to ideas and willing to use them.

Anyway onto your still pressing issues:

This is interesting, I would suggest that you report this to Wrye Bash team on their http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1354592-relz-wrye-bash/. They are looking to get CBash working at 100% bug free (as opposed to 99.95% bug free at the moment). It does still occasionally get names of locations wrong (particularly prevelent on the DLCs) so this would be useful to report to them, however it's clear the crashing is definitely not a CBash issue

This means that your crash is not being caused by a corrupt ai spawn point. Which leads me to believe that either your savegame itself is corrupt or there is indeed some form of mod conflct.

One other thing, Artorius, if I enable the Item interchange - Extraction.esp, Oblivion crashes on startup.

This is because this mod is not meant to be activated but merged into the bashed patch. If you select this mod in Wrye Bash in the bottom right corner there is white box with it's tags listed inside. It should be tagged with Deactivate and Filter. The reason why Oblivion crashes on startup is because ordinarily Item interchange - Extraction.esp has many masters which you don't have. However the Filter tag allows Bash to pick up on the mods you do have that Item interchange - Extraction.esp uses (such as Cobl, OOO and the DLCs in your modlist) while ignoring the mods you don't have. This means you must keep it deactivated, if it is activated in Wrye Bash there should be a thick red line telling you to deactivate it.

Unfortunately, I got the bundled version with Steam, and it pre-installs the DLC. That means no save with the DLC (and the initial quest entry) absent


I use the very same version and it is quite safe to uninstall the DLCs, after all they are essentially ordinary mods. I have done this myself when I decided I was only going to make use of Shivering Isles, KOTN, Mehrunes Razor and the Spell Tomes.

My suggestion to you is this (Please read through all of this carefully before doing any of the steps!):
1) Open Wrye Bash and deactivate the DLCTheivesDen.esp (or whatever it's called) and the corresponding UOP Patch, and rebuild your Bashed Patch (This is strongly advisable when you make any change to your load order)
2) Load up a save from before you entered the cave, ideally one that is an empty interior cell, but any interior should be fine.*
3) Make a brand new save and exit the game.
4) Go into Wrye Bash, Click on the Saves tab, Right Click on your new savegame and select Remove Bloat. Answer "Yes" to the prompt and it will remove all remaining unwanted references in your savegame.
5) Right Click on your savegame again and click Repair Abomb. Answer "yes" to the prompt and it will reset it back to 0%. When this gets high you start seeing visual anomalies and other strangeness. (Note it's a good idea to do both these things on a regular basis)
6) Right Click on your savegame and select Update Npc Levels, this will scan your modlist and relevel Npcs if necessary, which might be necessary since you haven't been using a bashed patch in your game.
7) Activate the esps again and Rebuild your Bashed Patch again.
8) Load up your game and restart the quest and see if you still have issues.

*If you don't have a savegame in a suitable interior, before you even deactivate any esps, load up your game from before you entered the cave the first time. Enter the console by pressing the ` key, it's located next to the 1. Type "coc testinghall" (without the quotes) and press enter. You will be taken to a room with many doors. Follow steps 3-8, when you Load your game enter the console again and this time type "coc weye". You will be taken to Aewolin's house (he's the old fishermen from the Go Fish quest). Leave quickly since you are technically tresspassing and you can then try doing the Thieves Den quest again.

The above is a useful guide for uninstalling or reinstalling any mod, not just for the DLCs.

Your welcome, I hope you find this post even more helpful. If you still have issues after trying this then we'll have to find which mod is causing the inevitable conflict (since that would be the only other reason for the crash)


If you ever want or need to start a new game may I suggest to you the following mod: http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=11474. This prevents all of the DLC quests starting up before you have even exited the sewers (which isn't particularly immersive) and instead has them start in more appropriate places and at more appropriate times.

I believe the CBash renaming of the Dunbarrow cove is due to the C.names issue which is a known item. I've seen that in my game as well.

Anithinks--that is what I found after a while a searching. It appears that others have already reported the naming issue.

Artorius-- Working with the save basically takes me full circle. I can now enter the properly named Dunbarrow Cove and the Black Flag, but when I try to leave the Black Flag, the game crashes. Any advice as to tracking down the offending mod?

On another note is there a way to make the bashed patch ignore a mod? (It kept merging the unofficial Thieves Den patch and then requiring that the DLC be active even after I had unchecked both of them.) I did finally figure out that if I dragged them down below the bashed patch in the load order they would not be included, but is there another way?

I did some testing with my mods. If I turn off UVII esp then I can move about Dunbarroe Cove without difficulty. If I turn it on then I get the crash. I also tried turning off the unofficial Thieves Den patch and moving the DLC content to load after UVII. None of that solved the problem. I then tried uninstalling UVII, redownloading and reinstalling it, and trying again, but the game still crashes.

I am not quite sure what my next step is.

There are two methods to do this:

Method 1:

When rebuilding your Bashed Patch, select Merge Mods(if it isn't already) to bring up the list of mods to be merged. Untick the DLCTheivesDen - Unofficial Patch.esp. Go down the entire list of actions and untick DLCTheivesDen - Unofficial Patch.esp wherever it shows up. Select Build and as long as you have unticked all references to the DLCTheivesDen - Unofficial Patch.esp it will no longer be a master of the Bashed Patch.

Method 2:

Go into the Installers Tab, wait for everthing to load. Select the Unofficial Official Mods Patch package. On the bottom right hand corner you will see all the esps that have been ticked. These are the ones currently installed. Untick DLCTheivesDen - Unofficial Patch.esp (and if you haven't already DLCTheivesDen - Unofficial Patch - SSSB.esp, make sure this never enters your load order again!). Right click on the package name and select Anneal. This will uninstall DLCTheivesDen - Unofficial Patch.esp while keeping everything else in place (Isn't BAIN wonderful? You simply can't do this with OMODS!). Rebuild your patch as normal. When you wish to reinstall you simply do the same process with DLCTheivesDen - Unofficial Patch.esp ticked again.

I prefer Method 2 since otherwise it is easy to miss one of the Bash tags and find you've just wasted 5-10 minutes building your patch only to have it still be a master.



I did some testing with my mods. If I turn off UVII esp then I can move about Dunbarroe Cove without difficulty. If I turn it on then I get the crash. I also tried turning off the unofficial Thieves Den patch and moving the DLC content to load after UVII. None of that solved the problem. I then tried uninstalling UVII, redownloading and reinstalling it, and trying again, but the game still crashes.

I am not quite sure what my next step is.


Well it seems you've found your problem mod. Now I'm assuming you do have the proper requisites for the mod (OBSE 20 and NifSE 1.0 Release)?

Otherwise the first thing you ought to do is to report this on http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=40310 and the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1232038-relz-unnecessary-violence-ii-taking-action/, although whether Hex Off will see the bug report in a timely manner or not is debatable since he is currently busy with Skyrim. However it still best to report it anyway even to alert others to the problem.

Now have you tried uninstalling UVII temporarily, and then playing the entire Thieves Den quest and only reactivating UVII once you have finished the quest completely? Does it still crash even then?

Also could you now post what your load order looks like now? Just so I can satisfy myself you are running everything to the best you can?


Now if the worst comes to pass you will have to make a decison. Either drop DLC Thieves Den or UVII, it really depends which one matters the most to you. I personally don't use either mod. If those do tickle your fancy I strongly suggest you uninstall Deadly Reflex 6 and UVII first since there are bound to be some conflicts with them. Also make sure to read the readmes of each mod thoroughly so you understand both the ethos and what is going on with the mods.

You will notice that I have all of Duke Patrick's mods sorted after the Bashed Patch. This is at the suggestion of the mod author and it overules the placement by BOSS. In order to prevent BOSS from putting them where it wants them you can use BOSS's userlist function. In order to do this open Windows Explorer, navigate to Oblivion/Boss and open the userlist.txt file. Add the following to it:

OVERRIDE: Duke Patricks - Melee Combat NO RECOIL.esp
AFTER: Bashed Patch, 0.esp

You can use this format to place mods however you wish, although for the vast majority of mods this is completely unnecessary - I only need to do this with Duke Patrick's mods, and only because Duke Patrick (spookyfx here) and the BOSS team can't seem to come to an agreement on their placement.


One last thing, since you have the Steam version I suspect you have it all installed inside Program Files, this is bad because it means that Oblivion will fall foul of the UAC which can think that certain mods are viruses (or other malware) and stop them working properly. However you can move your steam install outside of the UAC's remit. I suggest to C:/Games. Look https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129 for detailed instructions on how to do that. I was able to do this without trouble.

Thanks for the pointers on the bashed patch.

I will post my bugs on the appropriate threads. As for playing through the Thieves Den, I was planning on using it as a base of operations for my current character. As such, I don't think playing through just the quest part will work. I want to be able to move in and out of my home base at will. At this point, I think I will keep UVII and just find another stronghold. I've looked at Duke Patrick's mods before and they look very well thought out and interesting, but not exactly what I am looking for right now. I will probably give them a try on another playthrough.

On the Steam issue, I read up on steam before using it, and someone suggested avoiding the Program Files area, so I actually have Steam things installed in its own place in My Documents.

I will post my load list at the end here and will try to fix anything else you suggest, but I don't know how much additional playing/testing I'll get done over the next few weeks. I have a brand-new shiny copy of Mass Effect 3 calling my name :biggrin:. I will make it back to Oblivion (I have sooo much left to explore). I did drop DR6. It screws up bow zoom and my character uses a bow a lot.

Thanks for the pointers on the bashed patch.

Your welcome, Wrye Bash looks daunting at first but once you get used to it you'll wonder how you coped without it! If you want to know more about Wrye Bash have a look at http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=35230.

I will post my bugs on the appropriate threads. As for playing through the Thieves Den, I was planning on using it as a base of operations for my current character. As such, I don't think playing through just the quest part will work. I want to be able to move in and out of my home base at will. At this point, I think I will keep UVII and just find another stronghold. I've looked at Duke Patrick's mods before and they look very well thought out and interesting, but not exactly what I am looking for right now. I will probably give them a try on another playthrough.

I just want to ask again. Have you tried doing the quest without UVII installed, and then after completing the quest reinstalling UVII and returning to the area of Dunbarrow Cove? Mainly to satisfy my own curiosity and also because it could help Hex Off narrow down what is going wrong there. Sorry if you think I'm being a little pedantic on this issue.

Duke Patrick's mods are excellent and his archery mod would well suit a thief character that you are currently playing, (just don't be on the recieving end of marksmen!) but each to his own preference.

Also many I reccomend http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5977 (makes the guards smarter - if you are blatently sneaking around near them they will follow you; rather than just remaining at their posts like morons, but at the same time doesn't make them psychic) and saebel's http://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=37385 (although he will soon be releasing an update that will require a full reinstall of the mod, so I would wait a bit on that one). Both are excellent mods that make being a thief a more immersive experience (as well as perhaps a somewhat more difficult one, but who said being a thief was supposed to be easy!)

Unfortunately that isn't a good place to install it either, since that area is also governed by the UAC. I reccomend moving it to the root c:/ directory or to C:/Games (I would advise installing all of your games there)

As for your load order it looks fine except for this:

You don't use FCOM (which is Francescos, Marts Monster Mod, OOO. and Cobl combined) so you don't want that esp.
As for the Frostcrags, I'm assuming you are only using the Original DLC version so that's the only Placement for Frostcrag esp you need. Delete the two I've highlighted above.

Also you still need to update tohttp://tes.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=17557. Make sure it installed in BAIN after Cobl because the version bundled with that is currently the old one.

I have not tried playing through much of the DLC without UVII. I could give it a go, but I don't think the quest actually ends until all of the upgrades are purchased (I suppose I could console in the gold). I've also thought about just deactivating UVII every time I want to go there, seeing as it is the only thing that currenly appears to be affected. However, I think that would get very annoying very quickly. When I find out one way or another, I will let you know.

I'll keep your other mod recommendations in mind when I gear up for another go.

:facepalm: There I go assuming everyone has either Vista or Win7. Well if you are running on Windows XP you have nothing to worry about then so forget for now all I said about Steam. But if you ever upgrade to Win7 (or perhaps in the future Win8) bear it in mind.

Good, now that you have that properly installed you will now see all mod added food and ingredients(or at least all the ones in your modlist covered by Item Interchange) appearing everywhere instead of buried inside their own modspaces. Loot bandits and see interesting foodstuffs instead of just plain Vanilla bread, meat and potatoes (sheesh how could they live on such a diet!)

I do not use Bash so I am only saying this because I know that the following mods are not effected by games setting changes nor AI changes nor weapons changes which is why my combat mods must be loaded last even after the Bash Patch.

You will notice that I have all of Duke Patrick's mods sorted after the Bashed Patch. This is at the suggestion of the mod author and it overules the placement by BOSS. In order to prevent BOSS from putting them where it wants them you can use BOSS's userlist function. In order to do this open Windows Explorer, navigate to Oblivion/Boss and open the userlist.txt file. Add the following to it:

Thanks for pointing this out for me, I've adjusted my userlist accordingly. Unexpected and unlooked for help always comes as a bonus :) It doesn't make a huge bit of difference since none of the mods are mergeable but the Sounds from Magic you can Believe in can be imported into the bashed patch.

I was wondering if it was possible to combine the following two of your mods into one esp:

Duke Patricks - Near Miss Magic And Arrows Alert The Target.esp
Duke Patricks - Fresh Kills Now Alert The NPCs.esp

They both do similar things so it would make reasonable sense to have all the functions in one. I know your busy with Skyrim but it was just a thought.


Oh one more thing before I forget. You once mentioned on your http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1170048-relz-duke-patricks-combat-magic-ii/page__st__60 that you had found a more effecient way to remove the Reflect Spell and Reflect Damage effects on the player and other NPCs, so that it didn't flood the console with messages. You said you would put it in an update after you were finished updating your Archery and Melee Combat mods for Oblivion. But you did say for someone to remind you in case you forgot, so this is my reminder :P
