FO:NV Crashes Constantly : Fallout: New Vegas

I've searched the forums, and haven't seen a concrete solution for my crashing problem; however, I did enjoy the trolls who can actually play the game making threads saying they are tired of hearing about the legions of us who currently can't get more than two seconds into it before it crashes.

Problem Description: The game launcher comes up, I click Play, the main Fallout New Vegas screen comes up, I click New to start a new game, the intro video starts - and two seconds in it crashes. I've played with as many of the settings as possible, and I did get the game to run long enough one time to get through the vita-stat machine before it crashed again and so far haven't been able to reproduce whatever I did to get it to work.

I've tried starting FO:NV about 40 times and crashes every time.

Main stats: Corei5 CPU, ATI 5730, 4GG RAM, W7x64, runs other games like a dream.

Help!!!!!!!

I would personally uninstall the Lenovo One Key Theatre which seems to be where ActiveDetect32.dll comes from and is related to the crash. I've found a lot of these OEM Theatre programs to just be problematic, at least on all the Acers I've owned they've always caused me grief.

I assume too this is the same, so it might be worth checking it there's an update to the One Key Theatre first

Donno if this'll help...but if you have java it can make you crash for some reason it conflicts with the game, I only say this because when i tried to play the it, it crashed and gave me a error i dont remember what it said but after i uninstalled java the game was able to be played.

I feel your pain. I can't even get to the title screen before the game crashes. I've tried pretty much every fix available, updated all my drivers, unistalled codecs and java, etc.... The game still crashes a few seconds after I hit play on the launcher every single time. 50 bucks completely wasted... awesome.

Well, I have a Nvidia 250 GTS 1GB card and the game was hard pressed to be played without the d3d9.dll workaround fix. If you have not arleady tried this - do it. It not only helped around NPC's but gave a general noticeable performance improvement.

IF you have not tried the following, Do So

1) 3dd9.dll fix
2) Try to keep your screen resolution at 1024 x 768 or below
3) Make sure you have the latest 260.99 drivers.
4) Do not set AA higher than x2
5) Turn transparency multisampling (in game) to off.
6) In Nvidia control pannel set texture filter to High Performance.
7) Set shadow options (in game) to low.
8) Check out the fallout 3 tweak guide (Google) for things you can alter in the ini. file for performance (Example: I lowered sun size, sun rays, grass patches, grass Animation). Mind the Falloutout New Vegas Ready only .ini protection (Folders and files).

As a side note - I have noted that with my system - forcing AA through the Nvidia control panel works, but causeS some in graphic distortions (minor) so I would suggest you use in game settimgs for AA. Also, setting pre-rendered frame rates to 0 (Nvidia Control Panel) actually induced more stutter - unlike fallout 3 where it helped reduce stutter.

The game for me is now playable - but is still filled with many bugs (After 2 patches). Notably, general performance issues, Clipping, and the remaining script issues...

As a side note to Chris Avellone - would you care to pre-order some swamp land in florida.

I also came arossed this: which may be more related directly to your problem:

"Game Crashes After Cinematic Introduction (Intro Scene)"

You may be missing an important DLL file, especially if you are on a newer version of Windows. This error may pertain very well to DirectX 9. Thanks to ABC for alerting us of this method.

1. Download the dx9d9.dll: HERE (Nexus)
2. Put the file in your Fallout: New Vegas folder
If that doesn't work, then try the following:

1. Load the "fallout.ini" and "fallout_default.ini" (be sure to set both to NOT Read-Only and make backups of both files)
2. Locate SMainMenuMovieIntro= and delete the following lines:
SMainMenuMovieIntro=
SIntroSequence=
sIntroMovie=Fallout INTRO Vsk.bik

3. Save the files, then locate Fallout INTRO Vsk.bik and rename it to whatever you want (i.e. Fallout INTRO Vsk.bik BAK)

The problem should now no longer occur depending on what was causing the crash on your computer.

I don't know why, I think it was because of the "hype" of an unstable game, but I've kept track of my CTDs and hours played.

54 hours and 43 crashes to desktop. Or in other words, 1 CTD every 1.25 hours of play.

Ignore the naysayers that this is not an issue. My PC exceeds sys reqs easily (i7 920 2.67GHz, 12GB DDR3, Win 7 Pro x64, BFG GTX 285 OC)

Ageis - While I am not getting CTD's ( I have had only One ) I am gettings Game freezes at a rate of about 1 every 3 to 5 hours of playing. I am at level 26 (or 27) currently ( For a reference to the hours spent ).

In fallout 3 - I did have the CTD's bad due to the no-support for quad processors ( A issue was never officially fixed ) until the .ini fix was discovered ( set to 2 cores ). I am really wondering if I should test out Fallout New Vegas on 2 cores (Same Fallout 3 .ini fix) to see if it gets rid of the random freezing. Many of the fallout 3 issues followed in New Vegas, only they are much worse, in addition to many new problems.

I suggest you research Fallout 3 fixes for freezes and CTD's if you have not done so yet.

* EDIT - The reason I use windows XP as an OS is because Vista and windows 7 have many more issues with games - Let alone 64 bit. By no means am I flamming you. All reasled game should be compatible with the listed OS's. And the New vegas Box says it supports Windows 7.

Check if you have ASUS gamer OSD installed on your system, it has caused problems starting a new game on Fallout 3 and New Vegas, uninstall that and everything should work fine, no workarounds needed.

Well, I updated to latest drivers 260.99, Made a profile for FO:NV and set Power Management to Prefer Maximum, installed the .dll and just got through a 3 hour run, no crashes.

Biggest differences (probably due to the .dll file), my framerate performance probably jumped about 300-400% higher. For an engine with THIS kind of geometry and texture (set to High), THIS is the kinda framerates I was expecting from a rig of my caliber.
