Crashes due to overheating?

Post » Sun Jul 17, 2011 9:50 pm

For the most part, all my crashes are those that don't happen for any particular reason, just happen after playing for a certain amount of time. I looked at the memory thread about by default it can only address 1.8 gigs of ram while my computer had 4 gigs. I tried monitoring memory usage and the highest I saw it go was 1.5 gigs, so I haven't tried the large memory patch. My next guess is overheating. I got everest home program and saw that my cpu can get as high as 60 celsius sometimes, so that may be getting too hot. I went ahead and ordered a new cpu cooler fan. Maybe the card is an issue? I remember the 4850 has a fan built in, so I don't know how easy it is to upgrade or replace. I haven't cleaned the case since I build it though, so maybe that would help. Any general cooling tips?

You are complaining about 60c?

Come back when it reached 80 or 90. THEN we can talk overheating.

Under load, your GPU can get up to 80*C, depending on model, without issue. You only need to start worrying when you pass through 90. If you are getting 60* under high load, then either you are one of the luckiest men alive, or I'm stealing your cooling assembly. (:P)

You're probably hitting memory ceiling anyways. Try the LAA patch and see if that helps.

Hmm, does the LAA patch work with the steam version? I'm not sure if the steam executable is incompatible or not.
