Crashes, Land Tearing, Bugs oh my

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 2:22 am

First off i would like to give a hand to all the wonderful modders for their time and effort on these projects which have increased my reinvigorated my love for OB after 3 years on a console. I have a lot of mods and I couldnt see myself playing without most of them, but I would like to get my game working and running clean even if that means removing a few. Ive noticed severe land tearing in some areas as well as other odd bugs that I cannot really describe. Also im noticing random crashes after playing for more 30 mins. I think cleaning up my load order or deactivating some mods will help. I use both Unofficial Patches as well as the Official Patches, and am using OBSE although im having a lot of issues with it at the moment. Sometimes i cannot get things like Quicksave to work at all which means something in my .ini may be screwed up.

Here is my load order any help will be greatly appreciated, ive looked it over, used BOSS and tried to test out whats working and whats not but I cant seem to solve my dilemma.

A heavy load order like this is just begging for the help of Wrye Bash and a bashed patch to help them all play nicely together.

You have installed All Natural, but have no Bashed Patch... ergo All Natural is not installed properly.

Speaking of which, a Bashed Patch will aid you immensely in general here.

Quicksave is broken, don't use it. Save manually.

Also, MMM is wrongly set up. See release thread for instructions.

Cheydinhal Petshop.esp

Time to dump that one as well, it's got a very serious issue with the dialogue system, which can't even be reversed if the mod is removed from the game. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news here but chances are any saves attached to it are already corrupted.

Seriously needed in any load order this size, and especially so if you're using mods that require it, such as All Natural.
Living Economy.esp
Living Economy - Items.esp
Don't use this. Use theNiceOne's Enhanced Economy.
za_bankmod.esp
Is already included, in entirety, as part of
Better Imperial City.esp

This is in addition to the previous posters' comments about MMM, All Natural and Cheydinhal Petshop and from a cursory glance at the mod list.

Yeah ive heard about the issues with Cheydinhal Pet Shop so its looks like ill ditch that one. MMM is probably installed wrong because it was the first mod I installed in the new game. As for creating a Bashed Patch could someone direct me to a little tutorial on using Wrye Bash, I currently use OBMM will this override it?

None of my save games are too precious yet as most of them were for testing out mods or can be recreated rather easy. Would it be more beneficial to just go with a clean install of both the game and the mods using Wrye Bash? Also how would I go about doing this as I know there are some files that keep themselves stashed away even after removing the game.

Please let me know if i should pull the trigger

Would really like to know what everyone reccomends. Start installing a clean game or what?

And what folders need to be removed so that no data is left over

Not so much. More to the point, they can work together just fine. But, if anything, the more you can use Wrye Bash instead of OBMM (i.e., where at all possible), the better. As a rule. BAIN installation will end up saving you a lot of hassle, in the end. But it's totally your call, as with everything,

Anyway, that walkthrough will, um, walk you through the lot, including making your own BAIN packages.

Depends how much of a mess it is right now, if at all. I'd be tempted to start over, if you feel inclined. Making sure that you follow all readme files, guidelines, mod release thread OPs, and so on, to the letter, asking relevant questions in the appropriate mod threads only when/if necessary. That pictorial guide I linked to should give you a great start on all that. Plus, there's http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/, which is full of awesome. Just use as much of it as applies to you at any given time, but just remember that the latest official word on any mod (e.g., OOO, MMM or FCOM) trumps any unofficial site, every time. And install mods one at a time, particularly in the case of large or iffy mods - then test after each addition, to make sure the whole lot is working so far.

Good luck with it all. :)

edit: As for clean removal, uninstall first, then delete "My Games\Oblivion" (under "My Documents" or thereabouts, depending on OS), and the installation folder for the game as well - probably "Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion" (maybe the "(x86)" version of same) - in fact, may as well delete from "Bethesda Softworks" on down. On Windows 7 (my OS) you'd also want to get rid of "Users\[Your Username Goes Here]\AppData\Local\Oblivion" - not sure what it'd be on, say, Windows XP. And you could try running CCleaner as well (it's a freeware download for cleaning up files and registry junk).

edit2: Oh, and if you're installing on Windows Vista or 7, install somewhere else, whether you did this time or not. Like, say, C:\Games\Oblivion - it will work out better, trust me. :)

Yes, safest to start from a clean slate. Uninstall the game. Delete the entire Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion folder (so make sure to backup anything you'd like to keep). Delete the entire My Documents/My Games/Oblivion folder (again backing up saves and/or ini if you'd like to keep them).

okay another probably dumb question, Ive installed Wrye Bash, the Unofficial Patches, OBSE, BOSS and OBMM so far. Now how do i go about installing the actual mods using these programs? Can i just use OBMM to install the mods like i did before and then use Wrye Bash to create the Bashed Patches that i need or is there a special way to go? I just want to use OBMM because ive got a lot of mods that i downloaded with the OMOD script.

There's nothing wrong with OBMM, though it's not perfect by any means. Install the mods, try to follow readmes as best you can and then get used to remaking your Bashed patch every time you change anything in your load order.

Now im worse off than before. I load up OBMM it tells me the BSA List could not be loaded, it opens up and all my mods are now deactivated with black squares next to them.
