Crashes & odd stuff with Tribunal

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 1:22 pm

We're playing the disk-version of Morrowind - not from Steam - and have had a few issues recently.

First, after installing Tribunal (not GotY edition), my wife noticed that the game would crash when she tried to write notes on the map.

Second, after resting several times, no DB assassin attacked.

We just installed Tribunal this morning, so I guess these might be resolved after a reboot later today.

As a side note, I've noticed several crashes involving Dwemer ruins, particularly Nchuleft (I believe - it's the one southwest of Tel Vos, north of an Ashlander camp). In that particular ruin, crashes seemed to happen whenever I turned a particular corner, but occasionally in other rooms. Eventually I just gave up and left. This was *before* we installed Tribunal.

Running MW on a brand-new machine, Win7, and so far it's been going perfectly apart from these issues. no patches or mods.

Ideas?

I have never had any of the problems you describe, i get the odd random crash which i suspect is down to my game being overloaded with mods, but playing vanilla Morrowind or GOTY is quite stable, which leads me to suspect either your game installation is corrupt and/or faulty hardware, particularly with a new pc, faulty hard drives are very common as are faulty RAM chips both of which could be the cause of corrupt software. Try doing a clean install of Morrowind ,if the problems persist i would be looking elsewhere to see if other software is also playing up.

Thanks for the reply.

We did try to uninstall/reinstall, but the problem persisted. However, I'm not convinced that we did a "clean" install, since after uninstalling/reinstalling our save games were still available.

What is involved with a clean uninstall/reinstall?

Just a couple notes, the crashes in Nchuleft were occurring pre-Tribunal, but didn't seem to happen in all Dwemer ruins. Though the journal has been updated, the quests are not listing in it and writing notes on the map causes a CTD.

The enemies now have a visible health bar, but none of the other things seem to have activated. No DB attacks (Though, neither of us have completed the MQ, but I didn't think that was a requirement - but honestly it's been so long since I last played I don't remember all the triggers).

Have you installed the Morrowind Code Patch? It makes the game a lot more stable, as well as fixing a number of bugs and adding (optional) extra features. Get it here:

It means to completely remove all traces of your old installation. uninstalling it either in your control panel or by using the games uninstall feature ,that should get rid of any corrupt files and/or corrupt registry entries. Then by installing a fresh copy everything should be working properly assuming your pc is working correctly.

This is preferable to simply deleting your Morrowind folder or trying to install a new copy over the top of an old copy in which case corrupt registry or data files may still be present.

Save games are usually ignored by the uninstaller and are probably ok or salvagable, i'd suggest moving them elsewhere whilst getting the game running correctly then when all is fixed you will be able to bring them back if you want.

Your description doesn't mention if you installed Bethesda's official game patch. It would have been applied as part of the full GOTY installation (MW, Trib and Bloodmoon); I don't know if it would have happened if you installed only MW and Trib, which is the inference I get from your post. If you haven't, then I'd suggest installing all three, if only because doing so should therefore ensure that the official patch is applied and adding Bloodmoon now rather than later afaik does not impact the play of MW & Trib other than to give you some additional play options. It also seems that the splash screen will display the patch version in the lower left corner of the screen, but I'm not sure about that. As to the DB attack, IIRC that is not triggered if you rest for less than four hours; at least, that's what I remember.

It's unlikely to be a source of the problems you note, but other people posting in the MW mods forum have noted problems if they install the game in Win7's default location (C:\Program Files). IDK personally because I run my game on WinXP. And also keep in mind that even under the best of circumstances, MW is known to be particularly prone to crash.

It's just MW and Trib. I was going to download the patch but it specifically said not to if you had trib.
