Crashes when new game started

Post » Fri Apr 01, 2011 7:40 pm

I obtained the game of the year edition today. I fully installed, including the DLC content. I further fixed the missing WindowsLive thingy, and was ready to play.

Sadly when I get to the 'new game' section, I crash either upon choosing New Game, or within 5 seconds of clicking it (I can watch some sort of screen come up, then hang, then crash)

No known issues, I am a Windows Tech, so I am pretty danged good about making sure I have everything optimized on the laptop. I have a duo core 2ghz processor, this usually has allowed me to run up to 3.6ghz requirement games without undo issue, so this does not seem to be the big deal... I am tired and might be missing something obvious as all daylight, which does happen when I get tired...

So then I have run my DXdiag for you all..

Card name: Mobile Intel? 4 Series Express Chipset Family

Yeah, this would be the problem, the game doesnt run on any Intel Chipsets, it doesnt support the correct shader model. And since its a laptop, its almost impossible to upgrade. Sorry, should check the minimum requirements before buying.

Ahh and they wonder why they cannot sell games anymore on PC...

I would gladly start spending $100 per a game if they did actually come fully compatible and would not negate my laptop from being used in less than 6 months. I stress the word GLADLY. Well another game manufactorer on my "DO NOT BUY LIST". Sigh... this list is getting longer...

Btw as an independent truck owner my income is 100k a year, so yes Bethesda I could afford to pay that $100... just saying if you ever consider making things work for us Middle Classers... we might just increase your profits by about 1000% to 10,000%

The laptop is just not meant for graphically intensive games, the Intel chipsets are extremely weak. Also PC games are still going strong, maybe a little weakened by the mainstream consoles, but not too much that its crippling to the companies.

Lack of support for "Middle Classers" has nothing to do with this. This is more negligence on your part in regards to researching about what video card is necessary to run recent games decently, if not at all (and I stress these words). Just because a PC/laptop is "new" doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be one for gaming purposes. Intel Graphic Chipsets lack of graphic horsepower is not something new...it's not even a real or physcial video card...it's just a chip.

I don't even make 100K a year, but I have this game running on two PCs. A PC capable of running this game can be had for about $500 if you shop and research right. A notebook for about $650...again, IF YOU SHOP AND RESEARCH RIGHT. It's silly to blame Bethesda for making a game that doesn't support an integrated chipset that wasn't meant for gaming in the first place.

You are getting mad because Bethesda does not add support for an integrated chipset that does not even have the required technology to run the game?

I am upset because these damned manufactorers do not make games with anything but one or two of this and one or two of that in mind. I once spent $17,000 on a top of the line, hardcoe, custom made, laptop. Truly at that time it was the best laptop anyone could get custom made for gaming.

I studied the games endlessly that I wanted to play, got all of the games, worked it out, and voila... 6 months later I was unable to play new top of the line games.

I would have preferred to pay $2,000 for the laptop, and $300 for each game to make sure the games where designed with the most PC's in mind...

So no, I am not buying expensive laptops, when this seems to work on the same % of games the expensive ones work with.

And to the dolt who suggests a desktop...

I am a truck driver. Find space on my dash for a keyboard attached to a screen, and extra space for the rest, and do not let the wires get wrapped up in stuff, or underfoot in this tight cab. And no way am I going to get a tv and console, because I cannot take them into drivers lounges, nor other places, where my laptop can go. Make the stuff for me, and my money!

Then you were either missold or misinformed. It's been known for a long, long time that Intel chipsets just can't cut it. Also $17,000 seems extreme for a laptop.

I have a computer with an old 3DFX card, did I get angry at games companies when technology moved beyond 3DFX? No I moved on myself.

If you're going to add developers to a Do not buy' list everytime they make a game that doesn't run on outdated hardware, then you're going to run out of games to play very, very quickly.

edit: I suggest if you want to keep playing games on that chipset, you start looking at the smaller developers and flash games, because by the end of the year, I'm afraid that's all you'll be able to play other than older games.

First $17K on a laptop is way too much, and second if the games didnt get more advanced then we would get no where with tech.

True, games just arent meant to be played on that video chipset. Some will, but it really isnt Bethesda's fault that your hardware cant run their game.

Exactly. Bethesda will not add support for outdated technology that cannot run the game.

Damn it. I have the exact same problem and I'm guessing it's for the exact same reason. Stupid Intel chipset. Are we totally sure about this though? I can run Oblivion perfectly fine and the graphics are practically identical. Also when I go into the game options on the loader there's an option called "Graphics Adapter" and "Mobile Intel 4 Express Chipset Family" is selected. Anybody know what that means exactly? Does that just show up because that's the type of card that I have or was that option actually put there by gamesas? I can always install the game on my desktop but it won't be portable then, which svcks.

@CREinstein: Maybe instead of blaming the company for making a game that requires a decent graphics card, you should consider getting better desktop computer to play video games on. Laptops really aren't meant to be gaming machines, I mostly consider it a nice perk when games do actually run well on it. :P

Some Intel Chipsets do work with Oblivion, but won't work with Fallout 3 for not having the required tech(shaders).

If you really spend $17k on a laptop then 1 of 2 things can be assumed. Either you know a lot about computers, in which case it is your own fault for not making sure the game could run before you bought it, or you know nothing about computers and got ripped off by whoever sold you the $17k laptop. Either case, Bethesda is nowhere to blame.

Some Intel Chipsets do work with Oblivion, but won't work with Fallout 3 for not having the required tech(shaders).

So instead of blaming everyone and their grandmothers for this issue, would the solution be as simple as to upgrade the graphic card?

Usually, the situation is that simple, yes.

However, Laptops and All-in-Ones generally cannot be upgraded without considerable expense AND sending it back to the manufacturer.

You cant upgrade the laptops video chipset. And they work for Oblivion, not Fallout.

this article says you can
http://www.pcworld.com/article/148909/upgrading_your_laptops_graphics_card.html

but NVIDIA only has one or two graphic cards for laptops and theres no price listed on the website... pretty sure that means it costs an arm and a leg. so.... yeah... let me know if you guys find anything

It says you can, but it's very, very short on actual information. There's also the fact that opening up your laptop voids your warranty, the actual procedure is very difficult and I'm willing to bet the only cards availible to upgrade with are no better than the Intel.

And yes, it's very expensive.

The integrated chipsets are extremely hard to find, it would most likely be cheaper to buy a new laptop with a better video chipset than it would be for that. And most people dont feel comfortable opening up a laptop.

i have an extended warranty with Staples Green Dog service, my manufacture warranty is up, paid for another 3 years through staples. And i'm pretty used to opening the shell of a laptops and removing and replacing components. It's honestly NOT that difficult. most of the things that people want to have removed and upgraded are literally held down by a clip or two. I'm sure you know that. Never the less i'm sure a little service from a neighborhood Staples cant say no... seeing how much i put into to get the extra 3 years of service.... so.... i seem to be asking this alot lately... how much are we looking at for the graphic card alone? because i just pre-ordered FallOut New-Vegas and i dont want this happening when i get it in June >.<

i found a Nvidia 9600M GT card that fits my Acer6920 for 300 on ebay brand new. and the ad shows how to go about and replace it.

Of course, the 9600M was an option on a number of Acer Laptops. For the most part, Video on laptops is NOT upgradable. Cheaper to buy a new one.

Well I've gotten mine to work. I have a Mobile Intel? 4 Express Chipset Familly and I am currently running Fallout 3 perfectly fine on medium quality settings.

The solution was simply to install the http://fallout.gamesas.com/eng/downloads/updates.html, and then http://games.softpedia.com/progDownload/Games-for-Windows-LIVE-Download-28982.html (because the patch will not work without it). [Edit]After this you'll need to find and download d3d9.dll and put it into your ".../Program Files/Bethesda Softworks/Fallout 3/" folder (this, ultimately seems to be what fixes it)[/edit] When I started it up it re-assessed my computer and where it had come up with low settings before and then crashed after starting a new game, it now chose medium settings and started up perfectly fine although it was a tiny bit skippy in the opening cutscene, it's really not the end of the world (heh). Everything else works totally normal.

Hopefully this will help a few other people to get it working. And to all those people who said it would never work on a chipset, I can now proudly say: HA! Proved ya wrong! XD

Now I go play!
