CS crashes when saving a new ESP

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:53 am

While I am a huge fan of the many mods created by this community, I have never made any oblivion mods. Yet, recently I decided that I wanted to make a few changes, for personal use, to an incredible mod called TIE. Essentially, I am attempting to created a ESP that would override the parameters (attack dmg, item health, etc) for a few pieces items (weapons/armor) from Mehrunes Razor, Knights of the Nine, Battlehorn castle, and Shivering Isles so that their stats more closely align with the item changes that were made to Oblivion.esm by TIE. I am using the Oblivion CS version 1.2.404. Essentially, I am opening the CS and selection all of these mods and TIE. I am not selecting any file as a master because I would like to create a new ESP that can load last in my order that would override these other mods. To state this differently, I am attempting to make an addendum to TIE that would make changes to Mehrunes Razor, Knights of the Nine, Battlehorn castle, and Shivering Isles. However, I do not want TIE as the master because I want to be able to maintain my changes with future versions of TIE.

My problem is that the CS always crashes when I try to save my changes as a new ESP file. Even if I make absolutely zero changes, I still get a CS crash. Am I doing something incorrectly?

Thank you in advance for your guidance and suggestions.

You'll either have to esmify the esp(s) you have loaded, via Wrye Bash for example, or use the CS Extender. The CS will CTD if trying to save an esp that has another esp as its master.

You must be on Vista or 7. The CS always crashes for me too. The only way to fix it is to use CS Extended, as Arkngt suggested above, or load an ESM besides Oblivion before you create you plugin.

Accurate information follows: The reason the CS is crashing on you is due to a bug in the program. The bug is triggered by having one or more ESPs loaded in addition to whatever ESP you have activated (or if you are starting a new ESP, then you won't have activated an ESP at all). If you try to save your active or new ESP when other ESPs are loaded, the CS will crash, 100% guaranteed upon save, if the active/new ESP does contain the Tamriel worldspace record. All you need to do to have the Tamriel worldspace record in your active/new ESP is to edit anything in the Tamriel worldspace, so place a small rock somewhere obscure, such as a few cells west of Anvil underwater, or beneath the White Gold Tower of the Imperial City. As soon as you have made this edit, the CS bug will not occur and you can save.

Now, having said that, what you are attempting will not work, even after avoiding the bug I just mentioned, unless you follow Arkngt's advice to either ESMify the non-active ESPs using Wrye Bash so that the active/new ESP has them listed as masters (like ESM files are), or unless you use http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1158265-rel-construction-set-extender/page__p__16976497#entry16976497, which handles earlier-loaded ESPs like ESMs automatically, thus not needing to ESMify them first with Wrye Bash. It also will not suffer from the bug I mentioned which you have been experiencing.

The construction set extender worked perfectly. I admit that the install instructions were not perfectly clear; however, it is an very useful tool. I just wanted to say thank you for the information.
