Crashing Error

Post » Fri Mar 25, 2011 8:35 pm

I recently learned how to retexture and I've been really, really happy about it. I've retextured a few things but whenever I try to save the GECK or go into certain cells I get an error:

"The instruction at 0x77c6fc47 referenced memory at 0x00000014, The memory could not be written
Click OK to terminate the program"

This never happened before I started retexturing, but on the other hand it's been happening to my Left 4 Dead and some other programs as well. I'd really hate to reinstall it... :(

I have never seen a retexture cause a GECK crash, and I've put in over 1,000 retextures so far.

Given that I am No texturing expert, I find it unlikely that a retex would do this.

Suggestion to find out:

1. Try one of the backups, the GECK keeps 10 of the last saves you made - start there and see if one of them works.

2. Make a copy of your new textures somewhere, and remove them from the Data\ directories. When the GECK loads, it won't find the textures and will simply produce an error in the log and a big red diamond with an exclamation point in the GECK where the retex should be.

That will definitively tell you if your retexes are of any concern. I think its definitely on your system if another game is crashing however.

The clue is "referenced memory at 0x00000014".. it's referring to a specific part of your computers memory called high memory, and that's normally reserved for operating system use. The Windows DEP (data execution prevention) program is what halts other programs that try to use high memory locations, and it's purpose is to work in conjunction with a DEP capable CPU to stop rogue processes from causing havok.. things like virii, spyware, even some rootkits. I can't be sure what's causing that all of a sudden, but if it happens even once to another program then it is not a geck issue. You can disable DEP protection for a specific drive or program. Searching for DEP in windows help and support will tell you how to do that if you want to. Even something as simple as running those programs in compatability mode may help.
Also, when you say "saving, loading certain cells, and L4D".. those things all send up a red flag as being things or events that put your system under heavy load, even if it's only for a moment or two. Many issues (at first) only show themselves when you're going ballzout... things like heat buildup or a memory stick that has an intermittant chip on it, so keep an eye on things.

So... my computer is being strained? That svcks, It's pretty new. I'll try loading an old save and see if that helps.

If you retexture using texture sets 'furniture', the GECK and the GAME will CRASH hard.

You have to copy the NIF and retexture it in the NIF.

Might I say that your knowledge of computer systems engineering is impressive! :icecream:

Nods - thats because Goldman Sachs took our homes, our jobs and our futures - and got away with it. Have to admire how efficient the criminals have become. :(

Luck with it all!

Ok, I've completely reinstalled windows to see if that would help. Nope. I disable the DEP thingy but that didn't help either. I removed my textures to see if they were causing it and apparently not. I just don't see what's wrong, I could load the cell before perfectly. It's just an edited version of Agatha's house, surely that isn't too heavy for my computer to handle? :(

Editing 'existing' locations can cause crashes if you do it wrong.

Wrong being you deleted objects from the cell, that perhaps are attached to quests which cannot now run so it crashes. You 'should' NEVER delete anything from an existing cell.

Is there any way to restore it?

I think FO3Edit can restore vanilla objects.

Ok, I've installed FO3edit but I just get this error when I try to use it:

"Fatal: Error loading plugin list: "

I google'd it and apparently a bunch of people get this error and the maker of FO3edit has never explained why...

Why does everything have to be so diffucult?
