Crashing Fallout 3-GOTY Clean Install

Post » Mon Jul 29, 2013 3:12 am

Greetings all, I am unsure if Fallout 3 is even playable on Windows 8. At this time I have installed the game 5 times. Installing the main game and the expansion disc The Pitt and Anchorage. No mods are installed I have tried playing some older save games and even created new characters 3 times. When I initially start a new save game and it auto saves for the first time the game flickers to desktop likes its going to crash and then continues on. Every save game there after works like a hitch. When I zone out and into the wasteland I cannot save, I cannot hit the T key and wait, I cannot fast travel, I cannot open any door I cannot hit F5 and save or even standard save by hitting the Esc key. It just flickers to desktop and ends, no error report not anything.

I have edited the .ini as per one of the posts here to allow more than 1 cpu to be used. I believe two lines were changed. I have it running as Admin, I have it in Comparability mode Windows 7-sp3. I have installed into two different locations on the hard drive. Both install sights yield the same results. I have updated the games for Windows lIve app. I have restarted my PC multiple times.

I am at a loss as to what to do? Is the game not playable here? Should I just play the game on my laptop which is windows 7? I would appreciate *any* advice or directions on how to fix the game. I am fairly at ease moving in and around the PC and the operating system, I am not afraid of getting my hands dirty so let me know what I need to do.

Thanks much,

WME.

My PC specs are:

AMD FX 8120 Eight-Core 3.10Ghz

16GB Installed Corsair Ram

Windows 8 x64bit

AMD Radeon HD 7870 PCI-2.0 2048MB (memory)

I run the game on a LG 32" 1080p LCD Monitory.

Id be willing to bet you have a new and unique problem happening with windows 8. Something that a recent update might be causing.

I too have been losing interface control with various different programs. Not sure about Fo3 though , I mostly just work with the geck lately (which has its own fair share of quirks)

My theory is that a popup is trying to show up , or has and is remaining hidden (an odd and anoying quirk of windows 8 I have noticed.)

And it is supsending your interface ability with the game , and possibly corrupting your saves.

You might try a clean boot (if thats possible with win8) before starting the game. Or close out as many processes in task manager before running the game.

Maybe even disconnect from the internet and turn off your anti virus.

And turn off your auto saves maybe.

IDK ... but im sure the problem and solution will surface eventually after enough time and people using the craptastic windows 8 operating system.

By the way , Ive never run the game in compatability mode , and have had little to no problems.

Add edit: Wanted to mention when I installed the game in "C:/Games" directory. There was a popup saying it had a compatability problem and asked if I wanted it to search for the solution.

I just told it no ... and pretty much ignored it ... didnt seem to have any problems either.
