Crashing out of Oblivion CS

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 4:01 am

Ok, HERE is my problem: I want to find out the item number to my necklace that I modded, right? So, I open the construction set, right? I go to "data", right? I double click EVERYTHING I have, all the plugins, mods original game, EVERYTHING, right? Everything I have? Isn't that what I am supposed to do? Well, I AM ANGRY & FRUSTRATED because here is what happens right before I click "ok", which crashes me out & does not let me in:

What am I to do about this???? Please help me! Anyone?

Maybe you should only load the main esm and your plugin.

*snip*
Isn't that what I am supposed to do?

Umm...no. That gives the CS a seizure. It's much easier to use http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11536 and find you item there. It will give you the correct FormID.

Edit- Your necklace should be located under the "Clothing" heading.

Thanks, Vyper, I will try that.

EDIT: Ok, I tried that TES4Edit & it worked. Now, my next question is: how do I make a mod? (Not that I am a big modder, but I just do little items/weps & stuff.) Does the TES4Edit work for modding too? Or do I really need the Construction Set for that? If I need the CS, then how do I fix it? Do I uninstall & reinstall? Or what? Is there a mod that is an easier version of the CS that I can mod for Oblivion on? Please advise, thanks.

Everybody has to start somewhere. I started modding in November of 2008 (small stuff for my own personal use at first) and released my first two public mods in March of 2009. If you really want to mod, the CS is a must. The http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Main_Page can help a lot. Read the http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/A_beginner%27s_guide%2C_lesson_1_-_The_Construction_Set_Primer to learn some basics. http://www.tesalliance.org/ has classes that you may find quite helpful too. There are some truly gifted modders there that can provide a lot of insight and sound advice on modding. Have fun! :D

AGAIN, I ask, how do I fix my cs in order for it to work? Is there a patch for it? Is it because I am now in Win7 that it keeps crashing? Do I need to uninstall/reinstall? What do I need to do? These questions were not answered yet.

You've probably run afoul of UAC (User Account Control)

If you installed Oblivion to the default program files path, you'll either need to reinstall oblivion elsewhere (such as C:\Games or come such).

Then you'll need to reinstall the CS in the new location.

I believe there is info on this in CS Wicki.

You can also turn off UAC for just the Oblivion folder

I believe there is info on this in CS Wiki.

It is http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Windows_Vista. Reinstalling is not the only option though, you can also run the Construction Set as administrator (as explained at the page I linked to above). The downside is that you'll have to do that with every tool that changes something in the Oblivion directory. I'd recommend reinstalling.

The beginner's guide that the Vyper linked to is an excellent start. Take a look at the http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Category:Getting_Started too.
