Crashing on setup

Post » Wed Sep 09, 2009 2:17 pm

Hi,

I've tried running both the DVD version and the Steam version, and neither would start up. (Of course, I completely uninstalled one before using the other!).
When I click on the icon, the launcher comes up, telling me that it will setup the graphics settings accordingly. It then sets them to low settings, and, upon clicking "ok", the launcher crashes.
I've run DriverSweeper (to get rid of my old ATI drivers).
I've also deleted the "Oblivion" folder in "My Documents\My Games", to no avail.
Here's my system spec:

Core 2 Quad Q9550
5GBs DDR2
9600GSO 768mb (I've also tried an HD 4850 512mb - does exactly the same thing)
Realtek 885 (inbuilt sound  )
Windows 7 Home Premium x86-64

I can't see why it sets everything to 'low', I used to be able to run it fine on the very highest settings. (both XP 64, and 7 64)

Any help would be much appreciated,

thanks,

Calimero

Click save all information in the dxdiag, save the info to a .txt document. Open the .txt and copy/paste all of the information here.

Wonder if it is seeing your vid card as an old ATI version, that had trouble running the game...... might try just running the game itself, (not the launcher) and see if it will fire up.

And... Did you delete the Oblivion folder in my games???? That might annoy the launcher when it tries to write to that directory....... You can create one yourself... simple enough, and add the saves folder under it, see if that helps.

If I try just running the game, the launcher comes up anyway...
I already tried deleting the oblivion folder in "My Games", but to no avail.

Found this in my setup file; seemed useful...:

"SGeneralMasterMismatchWarning=One or more plugins could not find the correct versions of the master files they depend on. Errors may occur during load or game play. Check the "Warnings.txt" file for more information.SMasterMismatchWarning=One of the files that "%s" is dependent on has changed since the last save."

Those just generic error messages the game give when mods are missing. Those are the messages themselves... Note the variables in the text. Nothing to do with your problem.

Deleting the ENTIRE folder in My Games MIGHT be the root of your problem.

As previously stated (twice!!), I've already tried deleting the whole oblivion folder from My Games!

You are misreading what I am typing. The fact that the Oblivion folder ISN'T THERE..... Might be the problem. Or, we are having a bit of a communication gap here, and misunderstanding terms.......

So, lets clear this up. Did you uninstall the game, and delete everything? And, are you aware that there are two oblivion folders? On in My Games, and the other where the game is actually installed? (Default is C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion)

Yes, I am aware of the existence of two directories - I made sure to, after uninstalling the game, delete both directories: the one in "My Games" and the one in "Program Files (x86) \ Bethesda \ Oblivion". Also, last night, I tried copying over a copy of the folder from "My Games" (complete with saves, "oblivion.txt", "rendersettings.txt", and another file that I can't remember the name of..., and that didn't change anything...

Ok, try this then...... Uninstall the game again. (sorry.....) Delete the two directories in question. Empty recycle bin. Reboot. (just for giggles.)

Reinstall the game, but NOT into the program files directory. Create a new spot, C:\Games\Oblivion. Install the the game, whatever expansions you have, so the game is patched up to the latest and greatest, and then see if it will run. That should fix it.

Interestingly enough, I un-installed the Steam version (which is disappointing, since it had more DLC than the GOTY edition :( ), deleted both directories, then just ran "Oblivion.exe", instead of the launcher!
The launcher would run regardless, when using the Steam version.

Thanks for the help, by the way,

The DLC are just like any mod and can be installed on a non steam version even if purchased through Steam - so you can install the extra ones on the regular version if you want !

Are they not steam-exclusive DLCs? You can't get them on disc. It's called "GOTY Editon Deluxe". If I could use those with the disc version, that'd be great!

The downloadables are exactly the same as what is available on a 'real' disk, with the exception of Fighters Stronghold. (battlehorn castle) FS came out after the GOTY edition did, or something like that, and is only available thru steam..... Most of the dlc consists of a .bsa archive, and an esp, and thats it..... Copy those to your oblivion installation folder. (data folder, of course) and they should show up in whatever mod manager you use.
