I was among the Many for whom it crashed 10 seconds after startup to a black screen. Had An AMD R9 290 that worked for all other non - Bethesda games. I was using AMD drivers 13.25, but would it not upgrade into the 14.x or 15.x drivers.
So I bought a new Nvidia GTX 970, installed, restarted the game, ran first time!
Spent a day reading Bethesda tips here, and elsewhere. tried about 6 different methods. and dozens of tweaks.
I could not install any driver newer than the 13.25 that was on the CD with the R9. I read online comments of others with that same problem. One exchanged for a new R9 that did work, suggesting a hw problem. This problem has been around since late 2013 and it was not being responded to by AMD in late 2014. Even if a fix was to come out it would likely mean a new driver which I couldn't load anyway. I couldn't find the original box for a return. I didn't find any recognition of this problem on the AMD support site. And I also suspected Bethesda would not help since they would require new drivers and I was limited to two year old drivers.
For anyone else with this problem, the most promising fix seemed to be uninstall the drivers completely in Device Manager, and then allow Windows to auto update to the latest 15.7.1? Dont use the AMD driver install, or Catalyst
Like old clothes, the R9 will get handed down to a younger sibling.
