Crashing when approaching Missing Pauldron in Bliss

Looking for a little help,

I have been trying to find the cause of a mysterious crash in my sons game. Every time he goes near the Missing Pauldron in Bliss the game crashes. Just when you approach it. Anyone know what this may be?

Current setup:
I use Wrye Bash, Boss, and TES4EDIT.
As well as Streamline (only purge and save), OSR, and Crash Prevention.

I use Conscribe, FormID, Refscope, FastExit, Pluggy, MenuQue, and OBGE3 for OBSE plugins (a few minor ones too)

Is there a way to enable a sort of debug logging mode? That way I could see what is crashing the game (or maybe just the mod)?
Another problem is some missing meshes even though I have installed everything properly. Some missing are supposed to be in the Oblivion-Meshes.bsa but still show as missing. (I did Pyiffi but I tried it with both regular and Pyiffi version).

Unfortunately, with that many mods it could be difficult to isolate exactly what the problem is. But a few common causes come to mind as potential reasons:
  • The fact that you're getting some Missing Meshes with things that are supposed to be in the Oblivion - Meshes BSA means that something's not installed correctly. It's likely you have a mod that is redirecting from Oblivion - Meshes to a different location, but for some reason the game cannot find the meshes it is trying to redirect to. An example of this would be if the additional meshes that come with the Unofficial Oblivion/SI Patches are not installed properly. This can actually cause the game to crash if enough meshes (or just the right ones) are missing.
  • You could have a direct mod conflict - two mods that are trying to make mutually exclusive changes near The Missing Pauldron. This is unlikely to cause a crash since the later-loading mod should simply override the earlier-loading mod, but it can. A typical scenario: an earlier-loading mod has a script that is NOT overridden, but that script depends on a change that is overridden.
  • Remnants of an uninstalled mod that affected The Missing Pauldron cell could theoretically cause crashes.
  • Among other problems, long-running Oblivion games can run into what some people call the "Cell Nuke" bug. Essentially, this means that certain areas of the game cannot load without crashing, no matter what you do. The cell affected is random but usually is in a more complex area (i.e. an area with lots of buildings and/or active NPCs). It can even affect cells that previously loaded without issue. Typically, this will only affect games that have at least 300 or so hours of playtime, and often players can get to 1000 or more without having the issue.
  • Other save game corruption issues could also cause this problem.

Suggestions:
  • I would definitely try to determine what's causing the Missing Meshes issue first. That issue may be unrelated, but it's also possible it's at the root of the problem you're experiencing. You can target one of the missing meshes with the console to help you identify which mod is calling it. Chances are it's not in Oblivion - Meshes, but instead from another mod.
  • Try disabling several (20-30) mods at a time, in batches, and see if you're able to start approaching The Missing Pauldron. If so, then the culprit - or, at least, one of the culprits - is in the batch of mods you just disabled. You can work from there to determine the one or two causing the problem.
  • Try loading a much earlier saved game, or even create a completely new character, and see if you can approach The Missing Pauldron without crashing. If you are able to, then save game corruption is a likely (but not the only possible) culprit. If you are unable to, then a mod conflict, or a bad mod install, is the likely problem. (You can use the console command coc SENSBlissEntrance to get there quickly.)

I'm sure there's other things you could try, but they don't come to mind at the moment. Hopefully others will have some ideas as well.

I remember having an issue with crashes in New Sheoth outside one of the smithies a while back. I went on a mad bug hunt for a while, and it turned out that the issue was a broken lighting script for inside the store, and whenever I approached a door, the game promptly crashed. It sounds like your son's game might have this same problem.

The issue is with the SEDoorLightBeamScript in in All Natural - SI. In vanilla, the script has seven references. All Natural removes one of them, bringing the total number of references down to six, but somehow the game still expects seven, so it crashes. Back in the day, I fixed it by simply deleting the offending script from All Natural - SI.esp with TES4Edit, but it has since been fixed in subsequent versions of All Natural.

The easiest solution would therefore be to just update All Natural, and hope for the best. Good luck!

I'd also make sure your Data folder hasn't exceeded the 400 file limit. ESM+ESP+BSA cannot go past that number of files or you'll start getting random junk disappearing, and possible CTDs.

The issue with the script in AN-SI was because the file had the reference edited out in TES4Edit and Brumbek didn't realize you still had to recompile it. That was perhaps the easiest bugfix of all time for All Natural :)
