Crashing when near end-game

I have had enough of this bug to be honest, and I need a solution.

Basically what happens is whenever I progress a decent amount (in my case I have all 3 DLC finished and I have finished, what, half of the quests?), the game becomes unplayable. After about 5 minutes, the game will crash. This has happened on 2 save files. Here are some examples of the mundane 'triggers' for the crashes:

Bad save file #1:
- Walking 2 feet into Mr. House's chamber
- Entering Mr. House's chamber (instantly on using the door)

Bad save file #2:
- Approaching location with alien blaster
- Boone attacking an alien

This should not be hardware specific. I will post my hardware specs anyway:

GPU: EVGA nvidia 240 GT (single-slot card, came with 1gb gddr5)
CPU: Intel Pentium D 2.80 GHz
RAM: Hm. Just noticed I am using 71% of my memory. That is odd, especially considering the fact that the values in task manager don't reflect this at all. 4GB DDR2 (333 MHz). 3GB usable due to 32-bit limitations.

Since I just noticed that ram issue, I will investigate that and post this for now. I should have enough info here, if not just request more.
