Am I crazy, or do other people do this?

I put absolutely everything EXCEPT cooked food and power armor parts (which go into their own containers) into the workbench in Sanctuary. Makes it easy to grab things, because I know exactly where they are. Set up supply lines, and you've got access to your building materials everywhere.

Only time I throw stuff on the ground, is when I need to extend out the settlement object bar by using the well-known trick for it.

I'll occasionally scrap items in the field, if I come across workbenches, to reduce my carry weight (since 90% of what I loot is just for building mats at this point). I like the fact that you have to visit a workbench to do it, because it makes more sense.

you'll only have it in armor and weapon workbenches, and only in tinkering mode, not in container view

it DOES make sense, since armor and weapons do NOT get scrapped when you build, like junk does.

there is NO OTHER WAY to recycle them than either at the specific workbenches in build mode, or by dropping and manually scrapping them

that there's no way to scrap JUNK in the field though (or none i found yet anyway), that's a BIG flaw imo. i mean, that's the ONE THING you'd WANT to scrap for reducing weight!

True, but I've gotten in the groove of heading back home to unload every now and again. Maybe it's easier for me on my PC's SSD, where you don't have to deal with the horrible load times.

I was doing that too, until I figured out the hinky things that can happent that way. Want to make your purified water disappear? Put it in the workbench, and Presto! The @#$! settlers will use it up, even if the settlement has enough water. I figured I just wasn't keeping track of my resource use, until I read a post explaining it. Facepalm time.

If OCD were just defined as "treating something as if it were terrible important, when it isn't", most human being would qualify....

it's not about load times for me, it's about that i don't fast travel. i find that immersion breaking as hell and hence don't.

and in consequence of this, i spend most of my game s7oly _walking_ away from legendary superoverlordbrutedudes,

while taking in "you tryin' to lug the whole wasteland or what?" comments from behind :-))

Are you talking about the PC version? Because as I said, ALL of the benches -- which includes the workbench -- have the same menu of choices, none of which say "Scrap".

While in Build mode (which is where scrapping is done), when you activate either the Weapons bench or the Armor bench, the the Scrap option scraps the bench.

My OCD is to strip every dead raider and other enemies naked, and lug all their junk back to my settlement for scrapping. I don't care if I have to take multiple trips. I just can't stand the thought that I have left bodies and containers completely picked clean.

Junk is scrapped automatically. Weapons and armour can be scrapped at their respective benches. I don't see why you'd need to drop items to scrap them.

It probably isn't a good idea to do so anyway, even if just to consolidate your workshop component totals. Many recipes use parts instead of components (like Abraxo Cleaner and Antifreeze Bottles) and breaking them all down may leave you without.

I toss raider leathers, welding goggles, harnesses etc on the ground to scrap them. AFAIK it's the only way to make use of the clothing which isn't listed using the armour workbench.

Spent 3 hours going round all my settlements removing all the junk and manually scrapping it after I found out that only base materials are shared by supply lines

How did you find that out? given that it's not actually true.

Read it on this forum funnily enough, also after doing that I went from being able to build 2 heavy laser turrets to being able to build 14 but that may have just been from all the scrapped weapons etc, it was early in the am and I wasn't paying too much attention

Are you aware the fact that only Junk items being shared with supply lines, aren't you? So weapons held in different Settlement cannot be accessed from elsewhere, but if you scrap them and put the materials back it'll be available for everyone.

Not 100% on the whole settlement supply lines, I know about the weapons/armour being regional. Not sure about weapon mods as I've had the option to apply a mod (rather than build it) at a workbench that had no mods stored in it. Going to stick to just dropping everything I'm not using and breaking it down into base components at a workbench

This is really handy when overweight and can't fast travel to your main settlement (before you make trade routes or get the overweight fast travel perk) you can walk to another and salvage everything which drastically reduces it's weight, especially for things like extinguishers and fertilizer which are very heavy. It also works on things you can't normally use for materials like unmodable gear.

But i really wish they would allow us to break stuff down from the inventory while in a settlement or have a new crafting station dedicated to breaking things down that shows all items that can be broken down.

i'm so glad i came across this post.

The ruined house next to the shop in sanctuary is currently just a foundation for me. I would come back and drop all my junk and my companions junk and head back out.

Every now and then i'd stop by and clear some of it off. My reasoning for this...I thought there was some kind of benefit to doing it manually

Thank you though because now I can start just depositing everything into my workbench

I select something from the workshop menu that requires oil for instance (like a turret), then I get the exact ammount of oil that can be squeezed out of my stuff.

Everything except weapons and armour, those you have to scrap either at the appropriate workbench or drop them onto the floor before you go into build mode.

I scrap all my junk, always.

If there is an armor or weapons workbench (like in Lexington) then I occassionally use it to scrap weapons / armor that I have no use for down to their components.

You need to go to a weapon or armor workbench as if you are going to modify either a weapon or a piece of armor then at the top level where you select an item to modify you will have an option to scrap the current selected item.
