Creating and importing a static object...

So is there anywhere I can find instructions on how to import a static, simple model into the GECK that I can place in the world?

The information on the wiki is as clear as mud, refers to out of date versions of programs and explains pretty much nothing.

All I want to do is take the model I've made (it's a cube, can't get any more basic), and have it usable in the GECK. For some reason I can find a billion tutorials on how to make weapons, but not import a simple model.

The latest version of niftools for 3DS doesn't support 3DS 2010 for some reason, so I'm having to export as an OBJ, load it into nifscope, save as a nif, then I try and create a new object using the model in the GECK and I get a red exclamation mark...

I would love to know what I'm doing wrong but the tutorials available pretty much amount to "You figure it out".

Can anyone direct me to a tutorial that actually explains this process and isn't hilariously out of date?

Never thought doing something as simple as importing a freaking cube could be so laborious and frustrating!
