Creating an .ESP

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 8:04 pm

I have recently seen a few house mods floating around, and they all contain .esp files which you place in the data directory. if I wanted to put the house I edited (with the console) on the Nexus, how do I save it as an .esp?

You can't. ESP files right now are created rather primitively (and complex) by programs such as SkyrimEdit. You'll have to either use that to create an ESP (which making a house in is pretty much impossible), or use the Creation Kit once it's released later in the month to create an ESP plugin file.

Through some clever SkyrimEdit...err...edits, I'd imagine. Must have taken a hell of a lot of time. There's no Creation Kit which makes the thing a whole lot easier, that's why there's so few house mods and literally no quest or landmass mods at the moment.

As a long time modder, its kind of obvious theres no creation kit. But do you have any idea what program hes using?

Programs that I know of that can create or edit .esp files for Skyrim:
TESSnip (found with Fallout Mod Manager)
FO3Edit (can only do limited changes with this)
SkyEdit
TESVSnip (had some bugs in it, might've been fixed, not sure)

TESSnip/TESVSnip is lower-level than SkyEdit. I suggest you only use it for things that SkyEdit doesn't do yet, and for examining the exact structure/content of some specific esp file. What you can create in SkyEdit is much easier to do that way, because its interface is based more around the modding you're doing and less around the file you're doing it to.

The best thing is to just wait for the CK, it should be only a few weeks away at most. That will make creating houses and everything else a whole lot easier and quicker.

Just saying that you'll be wasting your time (unless you don't know what to do with it) if you want to make something like a house mod. The CK will be out in January, so that's 3 weeks from now at most, probably less. You can do something 10x as detailed as the mod you linked to in a few minutes with the CK. No point wasting lots of hours to place a few statics and items in an otherwise empty room if you can do the same, only better, with the CK in a few minutes. Imo.

There's no way to export it from a save file to an esp. The best I can think use getpos on every single item and use that in a bat file to use placeatme and getpos to automate recreation.

Have you tried looking in his mod in TESVsnip to get an idea of how he did it? You might be able to recreate it there.

Since you apparently don't know much about modding (which is absolutely no problem, it's cool that you want to mod) it was just a friendly pointer, no need to get upset.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3787 used the Fallout 3 construction set and did some manual editing afterwards to make it work in Skyrim. Not sure if that's a common practice, but at least it's one way.

^We are not a community of lone rangers so a modicum of humility, a little respect and a neutral attitude go a long way when interacting with others on these boards.

I don't see why object placement would be any different so forcing the GECK to load Skyrim.esm and then ripping the world references from the resulting esp and splicing them into another esp is certainly feasible. Being worth the effort is an entirely different matter though. I'm waiting for the CK to avoid any such unnecessary head banging tediousness with less than optimal results.

Texturing and modding are different things. You say you've been modding since 2002 but keep asking the same "how do I get it into an ESP" question over and over. Just wait until the CK.
