Creating your own armour and clothing from raw materials

Post » Sun Mar 27, 2011 6:00 pm

I know things such as crafting and blacksmith abilities have been confirmed to an extent, but to what extent would you like to see them in game?

Personally I'd love to be able to create weapons and armours from scratch; mining for the raw materials and going through the neccessary procedure to craft the items. It gives a more personal feel to the weapon or armour and with things like customizable design templates or customizable attributes based upon how much of a material you have or your skill it could really be great.

Gathering different materials could also be good not just for armour but for clothing. You could aquire certain pelts and fabrics and create a fur hooded cloak or you could kill a cow and tan the hides in order to make leather to create leather clothing items and armour. Again, depending on how much of the material you have and how high your crafting skill is you could make a variety of items.

Another thing I'd like to see is being able to wear certain types of clothing underneath armour, because a metal armour against bare skin is a little silly...

I really think this would work well if it was implemented properly. What do you guys think?

Not a bad idea. I'd like to paint my armor with custom designs.

I agree, that would be nice to be able to then paint our armours different colours and styles. It would add variety between players aswell.

Guhh... I can't decide. Hmmm... How would this work out, though? It would be hard to implement...

Didn't they already do this to an extent in the Shivering Isles with the madness armors?

I cant imagine it being too hard really - Lets say you have killed some cows, when 'looting' them you can skin them for hides which you could then take to be tanned, from that you have leather. Lets say you have one piece of leather and a low crafting skill, you could make some leather gloves - now lets say you have 4 or 5 pieces of leather and a relatively high crafting skill you could make some leather armour for the upper body.

For metal armours, you could mine for ores and the melt these ores alone or in combinations to make other compounds and depending on your quantity and smithing skill you could make a variety of items. Say you went to a workbench of wherever you'd craft these things and it will tell you how much of what you have and what you can make with it, more materials and higher skill means better and more complex armours and weapons.

I'd love to see something similar to this in Skyrim.

I'm kinda meh

Most of the time that games try to do this it's often gimmicky and doesn't work out really well

Yes, but the madness armours were the same i believe. You just had to go collect the supplies to make them.

Sort of, but that was pre set armour sets based on the supplies you got.
I'm talking about creating unique armour sets based on what materials you find, combine and customize.

It would no doubt be challenging. However it is definitely possible, at least if you look at it from an Oblivion engine perspective (which is the only thing we can do until we see the new engine in action).

I personally would be amped to see better use of shaders this time around, maybe a way to custom tint your armor. I know that is far fetched but I have an idea for a mod (if we get the Creation Kit) that would work a lot better with this.

I would love to be able to craft all armors and weapons sans daedric of course, as for clothes I would not mind it if there were unique designs, it would serve as a way to make some money on the side selling the new designs to clothiers, in addition to giving your character a more unique look. Perhaps a create a pattern system like that in The Sims 3 would be a nice addition, it would allow for more variety. As for the raw materials I hope it is a little more in depth than what was in the past games, but if it wasn't I would not be disappointed.

I don't really go for creating my own armors or doing a scavenger hunt for materials to make some armor. I'd much rather pay the schmuck to do that scavenger hunt for wolf pelts for me, then sell me the end product at a higher cost. This means I can go assassinate people or rob caravans to get the dough instead of hunt wolves in the freezing wild.

Not too sure about this. If people want it then fair enough, but all the new elements like crafting wood cutting etc. could take away from the exploration, combat, and NPC interaction TES is all about. Maybe Fable has left me jaded.

:slap: Snap out of it!

In all seriousness, it seems like a good idea, and would allow for a lot of new roleplaying opportunities.

I feel ya O.o

Good concept. However, if badly implemented (as it usually is), the outcome is.. tragic, at best..
