Probably because Morrowind was made in a very foreign culture whereas Oblivion wasnt

In an attempt to not just completely diss Oblivion (like some might), it's basically because of the habitat. Look at Morrowind: it has consistent ashstorms that are blocked in by the Velothi mountains; this drastically changes the environment, along with the flora and fauna. Cyrodiil has a much more... "un-alien" sense about it.

Basically, Morrowind has a very unique landscape mainly due to Red Mountain.

Heh, indeed.

Don't forget: not all of the creatures "native" to Cyrodiil are necessarily real.

Cyrodiil is a foreign place too.

It's only been a couple of hundred years since the jungles vanished. Ahem, it's a wonder there are so many animals so nicely suited to Cyrodiil anyway.

It's been said nevertheless, by the producers that it's more mainstream to go with "western fantasy". So that's what they did. Huzzah for ingenuity.

I love western fantasy, if Cyrodiil looked less plastic.

Vvardenfell was intentionally designed as the freakiest place in Tamriel. As shown in other games, the rest of the world is fairly typical-looking.

So does that mean Elsweyr and Valenwood happen to be American suburban havens too?

If I remember correctly then Black-Marsh and Valenwood are pretty freaky places as well.
But not nearly as freaky as Morrowind of course.

Yeah, of course.

Because humans don't live there, because they only live in temperate forests.

Man, Oblivion's the most realistic game ever.

They also live in deserts (Hammerfell.) Wait, those guys are Black? Nevermind, that doesn't count, then.:slap:

From an old discussion:
"Well, it's cyrodill, you can't expect the center of the empire to be as utterly ODD as black marsh or Morrowind".

Oh, yes I could. Cyrodiil was always meant to be the weirdest.

He may or may not be talking about the fauna. Irrespective of whether he was or wasn't, I don't see why it's some sort of rule a familiar place must have familiar creatures. In fact, I think it's downright lazy; as if adaptability was some sort of design straitjacket instead of a guideline for diversity. And if we don't blink twice at a minotaur, unicorn, willowisp or other fantasy creatures (which aren't weird so much as they are stolen, but nevertheless still impossible) or even a land-dreugh, why would we blink twice at the vegetable lamb of tartary?

The rule of cool also applies, best illustrated by http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSm5IQFaTZA

Morrowind is the land of all things weird, but I figure the creatures were what they were in Oblivion because they were trying to relate the game to Arena.

It's because of the fact Vvardenfell is an island, basically. Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar, Borneo, the Galapogos Islands all have 'weird' creatures as well because of isolation.

Does that mean Cyrodiil is connected to America? Because I could have sworn it developed in isolation of it. I could also swear the reason panda bears are exclusive to China has nothing to do with the fact China is an island. Because, you know, it isn't.

Not to mention all those rather "Earth Indigenous" fungi that seems to be growing all over Cyrrod, with names that are not even well disguised either.

Yeah, I mean in Morrowind they WERE trying so hard, especially Bloodmoon...Wolves? Bears? Holly Berries? Belladonna? Wolfsbane? Hogs? Cheap rip-offs of http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:Draugr#Grahl and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:Draugr#Spriggans? OMG! So orginal! How degenerate Oblivion is! Shame on them! I mean, come on! Cliff Racers were the msot orginal and totally NOT ANNOYING creatures ever invented. I would have loved to see something just like them in Oblivion!

I dunno... Emperor Parasol is pretty interesting.

So are Comberry, Corkbulb, Kreshweed, et al.

EVERY plant in oblivion is a knock off of a real plant. (with exception to ones from Oblivion.)

Then you have the things like Alit, Guar, Kaguti, Scrib, Kwama, etc.....

What does oblivion offer? GIANT ENEMY CRAB! (MASSIVE DAMMAGE! BASED OF FEUDAL JAPAN!)

I like how you pick on the nordy nord nord game for being too nordy. That was a clever move! But Cyrodiil didn't have to be familiar. And if you've ever had a look at a medieval bestiary, It could even have still been a European/Roman and still be weird.

(PS all of the beasts you mentioned were also in Daggerfall. Except Grendel.)

No, that honour would go to the kwama and its http://www.elderscrolls.com/images/creatures/mw_02CRB.jpg. Silt striders make a pretty impressive sight towering above the buildings when you step off at Seyda Neen, and it's sometimes fun to watch the betty and bull netches playing over the waters. Guar are just so [censored] adorable you can't say a bad thing about them. The other bipedal dinosaurs were a bit meh, but still all right. Nix hounds were a visual delight, though. I mean, you don't know whether it's going to lick your face or spit acid into it! That's cute!

Yes, cliff racers were annoying? But what's that got to do with anything?

China is an island in almost every sense except physical. But the physical sense is the one that counts in this instance. Then again, it's the isolation he was really talking about, wasn't he?

Apparently every province needs something to keep people out of the very center of it. High Elves have racism, Wood Elves have crazy hunts, Redguards have a desert, Bretons have Orcs, Orcs have Orcs, Skyrim has frostbite, Morrowind has cliffracers/ghostfence, Black Marsh has disease, and Elsewhere has freaky cats and freaky cat six.
