Creatures TESV

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:42 am

I think thats a bunch of nonsense. Its a fantasy world, so nothing should really resemble our world? Three of the playable races are inspired heavily by actual past civilizations. Should we be able to play only as fantasy style or alien like characters? No. I dont want to play in a land such as skyrim and come face to face 90% of the time with weird looking alien creatures....that would actually make game less immersive imo, and just a rambling mess where every corner comes a strange random figment of a developer's imagination. In skyrim theres plenty of room for creative types of creatures, but they shouldnt steal the entire show from the reality-based creatures either. To say that its a fantasy world and 'bears' shouldnt exist is just plain ridiculous....and especially if your comparison is going to see a live one in a zoo rather than play the actual game.

I also can do without reality-based creatures that adhere to strict a.i of their real life counterparts. I dont need to see wolves mating and nursing their young.....I want to kill them to gain levels as they attack me similar to as a wolf would. I wouldnt want developers spending months making sure a she-wolf gives birth realistically.

I agree with you in a way. This goes for everything in the gameworld, not just creatures. Sometimes when things are too alien there is little to relate to and this cripples immersion, and it leaves little sense of wonder or mystery.
I'd rather a fantasy world have an overall exotic feel than an completely alien feel. There obviously needs to be a balance between the familiar and the outlandish. Maybe the devs could make harder to reach or far off areas of the gameworld feel more alien.
On the topic of creatures, real creatures that are used could be stylised, or the devs could conjure up alternate species of existing wildlife that fit into the gameworld.

By the way, first post!

I just feel that there should be more alien creatures than realistic creatures. Though, most realistic creatures should be stylised by the devs. If Skyrim is used, I would love for Bethesda to get some inspiration from World of Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King. They done the whole icey wasteland thing perfectly, imo.

I want fantacy animals, but realistic not stupid fantacy animals. i don't want to run into a glisterning unicorn with tiger stripes and 6 legs along my travels, nor do i want to run into a giant mutated radioactive insect lizard elephant that hovers by galloping.
Guars were awesome, and the silt striders and kwarma were cool, and i like the idea of mutating (without radiation please) known animals into differnt species, kinda like the Udyrfrykte being an evil snow monkey.

It would be brilliant as long as the fantasy creatures that are used are convincing and biologically plausible (unless the creature is the work of magic) so that they feel real, which Morrowind did well in most cases, but regular wildlife should never be too fantastical as the above poster pointed out. I don't want to see herds of giant human-headed slugs with wings passing through a farm, or I don't want the next Elder Scrolls game to feel like a beefed-up version of Pokemon :glare:

I can't believe someone actually voted for Robots  , anyway I would want both more real animals and fantasy. Since there is only one breed of wolves, or two of bears and the like and I believe there should be more breeds and they should be distinct and easily identified. Also want fantasy creatures since it is an RPG...creatures from FCOM Convergence are awesome :mohawk: (creatures are from the MMM part of the Convergence I think).

I wouldn't mind if they brought back the Winged Twilight, but make them more what they are supposed to be, messengers from Azura than aggressive harpies. The Daedroth they did in Oblivion was an interesting redo, as were they flame atronachs being made female. Even though dragons are very rare, it would be something to see one just flying off in the distance, but so random that you'd see it maybe once every few TES months.

If they are going to add real world fauna, then make them like the deer...useful. Let you harvest and owl or falcon to fletch arrows. Let you harvest a snow hair to warm your clothing. Make deer and moose give you not only venison, but horn and leather too.

It would be nice to see more than the one butterfly on the roads, or a few bat swarms at dusk.

I want to see were creatures brought back. I'd also like to see a dragon or two...

I agree with were creatures, werewolf, and mybe wereboar, but you should only change some nigts (I don't think it's full moon every night.) If the game i in Black Marsh I would like werecrocodiles, and if the game is inSummerset isle i woul like some weresharks.

I don't want dragons, Ma'iq said they were to high up in the air, of course he said there were innvisible. It would be cool if you could bump int an invissible dragon though.

Put anything you want in there, just get rid of the auto-leveling monster system.

Also, after 2 games where one of the most popular mods (by far) is to create wildlife that behaves like wildlife, do you think you could maybe swing it? There is ZERO enjoyment for any human being alive having to fight a wolf or a cliff racer every 100 paces. Wolves run from humans unless they are starving. Give them a VERY low chance to be aggressive unless you get too close and they have young or something.

The dangers of the wild should rarely be a normal wild animal, and the sheer irritation factor of anything more than an occasional animal attack should make this obvious.

Make the game world feel like a real place, not a console port.

I'm not sure if you're being serious, there, but Ma'iq is called "The Liar" for a reason. Dragons are in existance, and they're not usually invisible in the full sense of the word. They are, however, disguised as mortals more often than not, and I believe most can't transform into dragons. Perhaps justifiably invisible, but not in the conventional methods.

Ma'iq was there to wave off the clichés not used in Morrowind.

I don't care what we see, as long as it's original (and yes, Skyrim has enough potential to be original). hopefully, we'll get Morrowind's concept artists back. surely, they can provide for Skyrim too. ^_^

I voted for Fantasy creatures. As others have said, that does not mean typcial fantasy creatures such as goblins and ogres. I would like Bethesda to come up with brand new creatures that I've never heard of before, or seen, or would know how to fight.
That's another important point for me as well. I want each creature to have a different feel to it. Most creatures in Oblivion and Morrowind were just the same creature with different stats and a different look. I want each creature to attack differently, behave differently, and need a different strategy to defeat. This would also potentially make it useful to have more than one weapon skill as a major.
Say I majored in Spear. I'm fighting a(n) [insert name]. They are large and slow, but heavily armored and powerful as well. Arrows would not pierce its armor very well, and niehter would daggers or blunt weapons. Axes and claymores would be much more useful against this opponent, but would bring me within its reach, which is very dangerous. A spear would be the best option here, because of its long reach and piercing power. After I defeat it, I run into a(n) [insert name]. These are extremely agile, but not very powerful. They tend to like to circle around behind you and attack you from behind while dodging attacks. With my spear, I will have a very hard time defeating it because it is faster than me and can dodge my cumbersome spear. It can dodge my spear until it gets close to me and then I cannot use my spear at all. I would either have to flee here or slowly get nipped to death. But if I had minored in Short Blades, I could whip out my dagger and defeat this weak creature with ease, now that I have the proper weapon for the job.

This is just my little scenario/example. The gist of my point is that I would really like completely unique creatures, not only in appearance and name, but also in behaviour and strategy.

I wouldn't mind dragon-like creatures such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindworm being added & interpreted in future games as 'lesser' dragons, perhaps remnants of the greater races of dragon, which according to the imperial library, could speak and shapeshift. Just a suggestion...
On a wider note, there are still many other ambiguous mythical creatures that have not yet been interpreted in any game, film, or book, that have potential to be used in the Elder Scrolls.
Because of this they can be unique as the concept artists want them to be.
Anyway, I do think more invented creatures would add much to the game & gameworld in making it feel unique.

I'm not totally bothered about alien creatures VS real world creatures, either way I'll be happy. However I'd really like to see a lot more non-violent animals, and less predators. In Oblivion you can barely run for 10 feet before a bear or a wolf sets upon you, which is very unrealistic. There should be lots of herbivore creatures, such as rabbits, deer, or alien equivalents, depending on the direction Beth heads with their wildlife. There should be much fewer carnivores, although they should be much much tougher. Wolves should hunt in packs, bears should be extremely hard to kill. Also animals should not fight to the death - when they get hurt they should flee, once it becomes apparent that their target is more dangerous than first expected.

Can't we have both?

I would prefer a healthy mix of real animals, fantasy animals and monsters from real folklore and Bethesdas own monsters.

I actually found the lack of any real animals in Morrowind a little dissapointing after playing Oblivion. Sure Wolves and Bears wouldn't fit in but there could have been crocodiles in the swamps or something like that. Good thing Bloodmoon fixed that.

There should be lots of herbivore creatures

Any obvious herbivores should be far more friendly than most. Perhaps territorial, like Rhino's, but, more often than not, herbivores are peaceful. Guars, for example, where obivously herbivores. They had herbivore teeth, and often reminded me of cows. Yet, they often attacked me out in the wilderness. Very strange.

Herbivores can be territorial. Hippos kill the most amount of people in Africa of any animals. Deer have killed people, as have Moose. They're vicious if cornered, not peaceful. Very few things will walk up to a person out of the wilderness like "Hey, sup?" unless they've been domesticated or exposed to many people over the years. They just flee very often 'cause they're seen as "prey", but that's mostly antelope and deer. Elephants also kill a lot of people.

Fight or Flight works the same for them as it does for us. If you're in a bad situation you've got 2 instinctive choices: Fight Back & Run. They should be less aggressive, I agree, but if they're cornered or injured they should fight back instead of still trying to run when you can obviously catch up to them.

They should have a "herd mentality" in the next game, for some of the herbivores. If they get scared they should stampede and trample things. :D

On a side note: Wood Elves would be great horse whisperers.

-snip-

I do agree that they should have a "herd mentality", but, for the herbivores that aren't a pat of a herd, I'd like to see them being peaceful. I would think with Bethesda's engine, it would be dificult to implement such a realistic system. I'd rather they never fought unless provoked (also unless they run away). Unless they're territorial. (I did say about that in my post :P)

Morrowind had robots :\ Dwemer Centurions, anyone?

Unfortunalty, I only had one choice. I'd rather unique fantasy animals roam the lands than a bunch of centurions. It would also be difficult to get the power to fuel centurions. Only the Dwemer knew how to create such a thing, and the only source of power was on Vvardenfell (which is gone now, and no one can study it, since no one had found it). Could be quite a headache to fix the lore.

But... I do want to see Dwemer Ruins. they where supposed to be all over Tamriel, and they looked awesome.

I like the idea of both. Some that we can harvest and maybe use like the deer and such. Others, that would offer some great eye candy. Would love to see an Ice Elemental type that didn't always look like an Atronach or mountain. Something almost human formed and elusive. The Spriggans were redone exceptionally from game to game.
Maybe some Oreads this time.
If they bring back the Uderfrykte species, please don't kill off anymore NPC's that some of us still speak to. Kind of ruins it knowing they won't have long to live from game to game. : (

Just for the fun of it, if we are going to have establishments and town, I think it would be nice to throw us a few wee ones running about or offering trade items.
