I hope this is the right part of the forum to ask this, but how do you launch a critical hit when playing with an Xbox controller on the PC? There is no tooltip on the critical bar, which is full. I have tried hitting the space bar but no joy. I have never launched a critical hit in about 40 hours of play.

Press (X) once you have selected and started the shooting sequence of VATS

I just get them automatically in VATS.

Comes up at the bottom of the HUD to press X. Think it happens when you're actually shooting/hitting something, not before.
