In this playthrough I have never used overdrive. I have used vats crits 3 times so far. Subtracting data #s for sneak attacks from criticals leaves me 8 crits unaccounted for. (Luck 2.)

From what I found the crit system is a total mess. There seems to be:
crits: additional damage that is not announced and does not apply crit effects (freezing, etc)
Crits: additional damage and crit effects
Sneak crits: additional damage that is announced and does not apply crit effects.
I decided to look into it after seeing I had nearly 1000 crits even though I used sneak attacks very infrequently and rarely use Vats.
I've played FPS since Doom, with my son at that time. I play the Stalker games and some of the mods. Thy can be insanely hard in places and I just cannot bring myself to use VATs. Stalker is brutal and one learns many things are best dealt with, first by running away and secondly by getting the environment, local heavy's etc, to do some of the work for you. I could tell stories of my journey south at level 7, where I arranged the death of several Deathclaws and nearly killed a Behemoth. On Survival of course.
For me it's cheating, VATS is.
