Criticism about mods?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:43 am

I posted a thread here long ago, which was for people to express their frustations about things that mods like to do.
I remember also stating in the thread-start that the posts shouldn't address a single mod or modder, but that might be my memory.

It's been a while, and I don't know if anyone is still allowed to say anything negative about mods.
The reason for the closing of that thread was that it was a 'flamebait.' That we should be thankful that the modders bother to share their hard work with us.

I remember my largest complaint about mods was that most body-texture improving mods required pormographic mods- ones which created female (and male) genitals in great detail. I didn't want to turn my game into a pormo-session, only because I would find an NPC who happened to have better pants than mine.

My point about criticism is: I share my work because I want to hear what people think about it. It was hard work, sure, but I still want to hear what others think about it. Otherwise I wouldn't share it.

Well, at least I got to speak my mind, even tho this thread will likely be closed.

PS: Im not a modder or a coder. I make pictures and share them on the internet.

I share my work for others to enjoy. I spend countless hours working hard on my projects and I don't get paid for it. This is a hobby, if the hobby becomes unenjoyable and I find myself taking harsh, often ignorant criticism from people with nothing better to do, who seem to believe I work for them, then my hobby becomes far less fun and I am not so inspired to do it anymore. Who would?

'Don't bite the hand that feeds you.' 'nuff said really.

But really why come onto a modding forum where the modders hang out and start a thread on criticising mods, just seems like walking into a football locker room and expecting and goading all the players to start criticising each other on their game, it just creates a bad atmosphere.

Constructive criticism is great, to an extent. Too much of it in one place makes the mods nervous and eventually one of the more touchy mods will find it. It's like playing Russian Roulette, and it's something you have to deal with on every forum.

That said, the only truly constructive criticism is to make your own mods and post them.

Patently untrue. There isn't a single body mod I can think of that doesn't have an underwear version.

imo, criticism about mods is fine, provided it is posted in the thread of the mod its criticizing so that the author can see it and take it into account. There is a slim chance any modder will look to this thread to see comments on their mods, so the criticism becomes little more than complaining a mod behind the modder's back.

Probably a good idea to consider if your previous posting was closed because it could be considered flamebait--and whatever your intentions, it's pretty easy to construe this as such--maybe opening another of the same isn't the best of ideas. Food for thought.

I remember my largest complaint about mods was that most body-texture improving mods required pormographic mods- ones which created female (and male) genitals in great detail. Patently untrue. Also, surprise, another lovely flamebait topic, even without having to get into the discussion on whether the human/alien/whatever body should be considered pormographic or not.

My point about criticism is: I share my work because I want to hear what people think about it. It was hard work, sure, but I still want to hear what others think about it. Otherwise I wouldn't share it.

Criticism works if it is constructive, and if it is in the appropriate place. For instance, notifying XXX modder in his/her release thread that perhaps XXX feature would work better with the rest of the mod if it were XXX could be considered constructive.

This thread, however, can not be. Hopefully someone nice will come along and close it :)

If you take the time to read the rules of this forum, you will find this bit:
8. The only criticism that is allowed here is constructive criticism and that is welcome.

Constructive criticism criticizes a proposed idea. Criticism that is directed against one person, be it a modder, another member, an individual developer, a certain moderator or a group effort are all forbidden.
This means that when you voice your concerns, please do so in a way that offers a vehicle for improvement. If you see something going wrong, feel free to say so, but also say something about how to set it right.

It also means that posts that run down other members or factions among the membership who may not agree with you are still out under the rules against flaming and flamebaiting.

Feel free to post such as above outlined in the threads you wish, just be careful not to break that rule. Since we do have guidelines for you to use, there is no need for this thread. :)

Closed as resolved. :)
